Preparation: this chemical can be prepared by phenylacetic acid by heating. This reaction will need reagent N-bromosuccinimide, benzoyl peroxide and solvent CCl4 with the reaction time of 5 hours. The yield is about 82%.

Uses of Benzeneacetic acid, a-bromo-: it can be used to produce bromo-phenyl-acetyl chloride at the ambient temperature. It will need reagent SOCl2 with the reaction time of 2 hours. The yield is about 91.9%.
