- TRANSFORMATIONS OF o-CYCLOPROPYLPHENYL BENZYL SULFONE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF PROTIC ACIDS
-
o-Cyclopropylphenyl benzyl sulfone was synthesized, and its behaviour in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid, polyphosphoric acid, and trifluoroacetic acid was studied.Treatment of the sulfone with trifluoroacetic acid at 45 deg C led to addition in the small ring with the formation of benzyl 2-(1-trifluoroacetoxypropyl)phenyl sulfone. The reaction of the sulfone with concentrated sulfuric acid or polyphosphoric acid led to the formation of three reaction products, i.e., 5,5-dioxo-11-ethyl-6,11-dihydrobenzothiepin, benzyl 2-(2-hydroxypropyl)phenyl sulfone, and 3-methyl-1-oxobenzo-2,1-oxathiane, the ratios of which depended on the temperature conditions.A possible mechanism for the reaction is proposed.
