- Liquid-Crystalline Star-Shaped Supergelator Exhibiting Aggregation-Induced Blue Light Emission
-
A family of closely related star-shaped stilbene-based molecules containing an amide linkage are synthesized, and their self-assembly in liquid-crystalline and gel states was investigated. The number and position of the peripheral alkyl tails were systematically varied to understand the structure-property relation. Interestingly, one of the molecules with seven peripheral chains was bimesomorphic, exhibiting columnar hexagonal and columnar rectangular phases, whereas the rest of them stabilized the room-temperature columnar hexagonal phase. The self-assembly of these molecules in liquid-crystalline and organogel states is extremely sensitive to the position and number of alkoxy tails in the periphery. Two of the compounds with six and seven peripheral tails exhibited supergelation behavior in long-chain hydrocarbon solvents. One of these compounds with seven alkyl chains was investigated further, and it has shown higher stability and moldability in the gel state. The xerogel of the same compound was characterized with the help of extensive microscopic and X-ray diffraction studies. The nanofibers in the xerogel are found to consist of molecules arranged in a lamellar fashion. Furthermore, this compound shows very weak emission in solution but an aggregation-induced emission property in the gel state. Considering the dearth of solid-state blue-light-emitting organic materials, this molecular design is promising where the self-assembly and emission in the aggregated state can be preserved. The nonsymmetric design lowers the phase-transition temperatures. The presence of an amide bond helps to stabilize columnar packing over a long range because of its polarity and intermolecular hydrogen bonding in addition to promoting organogelation.

- Effect of regioisomerism on the self-assembly, photophysical and gelation behavior of aroylhydrazone based polycatenars: Synthesis and characterization
-
In this paper we report five series of aroylhydrazone based polycatenars differing from each other in number and position of alkoxy chains on one end of the core; keeping other end the same. A systematic variation in the structures was carried out to understand the effect of position and chain length on the mesophase behavior. In the case of single alkoxy chain at 4-position, there is a transition from Smectic C to Smectic A mesophase during cooling and Smectic A to Smectic C transition in heating cycle in all the homologues except n = 6 & n = 8. In the case of two alkoxy chains at 3-, 5-positions, the compounds are non-mesogenic in nature. On changing the position of alkoxy chains from 3-, 5-positions to 3-, 4-positions, intermolecular forces weaken and these compounds become liquid crystalline and show columnar rectangular mesophase resulting from the effect of regioisomerism. Moving on to the series with three alkoxy chains, it was observed that 2-, 3-, 4-trialkoxy substituted compounds exhibit columnar rectangular mesophase except lower chain length (n = 6 & 8) while 3-, 4-, 5-trialkoxy substituted aroylhydrazones show columnar rectangular mesophase; except n = 10 which shows columnar oblique mesophase. Thus it was established that on increasing density of alkoxy chains around one terminal, mesophase changes from smectic to columnar mesophase. Temperature dependent Raman studies confirm the presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Further, effect of substitution pattern did not show much influence on the photophysical properties of the mesogenic series in solid and solution state. However, the non-mesogenic series showed a different absorption and emission transition from the mesogenic series in solid and solution state. Solid state fluorescence studies show almost similar emission maxima in all the series. However, it was also noticed that non-mesogenic series show maximum red shifted emission maxima in solid state as compared to that of solution. All the series showed good gelation properties with less than 1% CGC (wt%) suggesting the strong ability of molecules to form gel. These H-bonded liquid-crystalline gels have immense potential for applications in emissive displays.

- Supramolecular Columnar Liquid Crystals with Tapered-Shape Simple Pyrazoles Obtained by Efficient Henry/Michael Reactions
-
A straightforward synthesis of mesogenic pyrazoles starting from benzaldehydes by a combination of efficient Henry and Michael reactions led to novel supramolecular liquid crystals. The mesogens are fluorescent 3,5-dimethyl-4-(di or trialkoxyphenyl)pyrazoles and, in spite of the tapered shape of these molecules and their structural simplicity (only one phenyl ring), columnar liquid-crystal phases were formed that are stable at room temperature. The self-assembled structure was studied by XRD and the columnar cross section contains two molecules on average with an antiparallel arrangement of pyrazoles interacting through hydrogen bonds. In contrast, the single-crystal structure of a trimethoxy analog did not show hydrogen-bonded pyrazoles but chains of head-to-tail arranged molecules.

- s-Triazine-Based Functional Discotic Liquid Crystals: Synthesis, Mesomorphism and Photoluminescence
-
A new series of C3-symmetric, π-conjugated molecules was designed, synthesized and characterized. The materials were derived from electron-accepting s-triazine, appended covalently to electron-donating styrylbenzene arms, and were readily prepared in excellent yield with high purity by means of three-fold condensation of triphosphonate with n-alkoxybenzaldehydes under Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons reaction conditions. Examination of the phase transitional properties by several complementary techniques evidenced self-assembly into a hexagonal columnar phase, occurring over wide and reasonable thermal ranges. The photophysical properties were studied both in solution and in the fluid/frozen columnar states by UV/Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The emission spectra obtained as a function of the temperature rule out the breaking-up of larger columns and a non-radiative, thermally activated process. A study carried out on thin films of the glassy columnar state, which accounts for conserved fluorescence, defect-free orientation, and freezing ionic species, with the help of atomic force microscopy (AFM) images, suggested a homogeneous granular morphology comprising fibrillar structures. Dissimilarities in the surface morphology and birefringence of thin films of the solid and frozen columnar states were clearly shown by Raman spectroscopy. An electrochemical investigation revealed a LUMO energy of ?4.0 eV. Thus, the discotic motifs presented herein meet certain criteria of organic materials, which are essential for developing electronic devices.

- Tuning the thermotropic properties of liquid crystalline p-substituted aroylhydrazones
-
The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of forty substituted aroylhydrazones with peripheral mono-, di- and tri- alkoxy chains derived from a p-amino aroylhydrazone core are described. The compounds with two side chains exhibited a smectic A phase, while the compounds with six soft alkoxy side chains at symmetrical positions formed a rectangular columnar mesophase. The structures of these mesophases were confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. Raman studies with the help of density functional theory on some of the mesogenic members have been performed to understand the changes in the intermolecular interactions during phase transitions. A structure-property relationship has been deduced, and mesogenic properties are found to be dependent on the chain length, density and position of the alkoxy chains around the molecular core.

- Supergelation via purely aromatic π-π Driven self-assembly of pseudodiscotic oxadiazole mesogens
-
A series of highly luminescent oxadiazole-based stilbene molecules (OXD4, OXD8, OXD10, and OXD12) exhibiting interesting enantiotropic liquid crystalline and gelation properties have been synthesized and characterized. The molecules possessing longer alkyl substituents, OXD10 and OXD12, possess a pseudodisc shape and are capable of behaving as supergelators in nonpolar solvents, forming self-standing gels with very high thermal and mechanical stability. Notably the self-assembly of these molecules, which do not possess any hydrogen-bonding motifs normally observed in most reported supergelators, is driven purely by π-stacking interactions of the constituent molecules. The d-spacing ratios estimated from XRD analysis of OXD derivatives possessing longer alkyl chains show that the molecules are arranged in a columnar fashion in the mesogens and the self-assembled nanofibers formed in the gelation process.

- Self-assembly of hekates-tris(N -salicylideneaniline)s into columnar structures: Synthesis and characterization
-
Two series of new, photoluminescent star-shaped discotic liquid crystals, recently termed as "hekates", derived from tris(N-salicylideneaniline) s (TSANs), were synthesized by the facile threefold condensation of 3,4-bis(alkoxy)phenyl 4-aminobenzoates/3,4,5-tris(alkoxy) phenyl 4-aminobenzoates with 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol and characterized. These two series of discotics with six and nine peripheral n-alkoxy tails were especially designed and accomplished to understand the relation between mesomorphic/photophysical properties and molecular structure. Proton NMR spectral analysis revealed their existence as an inseparable mixture of two keto-enamine tautomeric forms featuring C3h and Cs rotational symmetries. A systematic study into the thermotropic liquid crystal behavior using polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray scattering confirmed the presence of columnar (Col) phase in vast majority of the TSANs prepared. The two-dimensional (2D) lattices of these fluid columnar phases were found to be characteristic of hexagonal Col (Col h), rectangular Col (Colr), or oblique Col (Col ob) phases depending on the number/length of the peripheral flexible chains. The stabilization of the Colob phase, a less commonly found fluid columnar structure, and the first of its kind in TSAN systems, implies very intensive intermolecular (face-to-face) interactions among the TSAN cores within the column. The photophysical properties were investigated both in solution and the columnar states by UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence; markedly, the solution state emits light in the blue region. The light-emitting ability of the Col phase is particularly significant given the possibility that, in such cores, the protons and electrons interact with each other through the H-bonding environment.

- T-shaped ionic liquid crystals based on the imidazolium motif: Exploring substitution of the C-2 imidazolium carbon atom
-
In this contribution the first examples of so-called rigid-core, T-shaped imidazolium ionic liquid crystals, in which the C-2 atom of the imidazolium ring is substituted with an aryl moiety decorated with one or two alkoxy chains, are described. The length of the alkoxy chain(s) was varied from six to eighteen carbon atoms (n=6, 10, 14-18). Whereas the compounds with one long alkoxy chain display only smectic A phases, the salts containing two alkoxy chains exhibit smectic A, multicontinuous cubic, as well as hexagonal columnar phases, as evidenced by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and powder X-ray diffraction. Structural models are proposed for the self-assembly of the molecules within the mesophases. The imidazolium head groups and the iodide counterions were found to adopt a peculiar orientation in the central part of the columns of the hexagonal columnar phases. The enantiotropic cubic phase shown by the 1,3-dimethyl-2-[3,4-bis(pentadecyloxy) phenyl]imidazolium iodide salt has a multicontinuous Pmβar 3μ structure. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a thermotropic cubic mesophase of this symmetry. Copyright

- A new family of bent-core C2-symmetric liquid crystals
-
A series of C2-symmetric compounds with different core sizes and varying lengths and numbers of alkoxy side chains were prepared, and the factors influencing their liquid crystalline mesophase behaviour were investigated. The compounds studied were based on benzophenone, dibenzylidene-acetone, and 1,9-diphenyl-nona-1,3,6,8-tetraen-5-one cores with either 1 or 2 linear alkoxy side chains. The side chains were varied in length from C6H13 to C12H25. The liquid crystalline mesophase behaviour of the compounds was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). It was found that a number of the molecules were able to self-assemble into smectic and nematic liquid crystalline phases.

- 2,4-Diaminopyrimidines as inhibitors of leishmanial and trypanosomal dihydrofolate reductase
-
This paper describes the synthesis of 4′-substituted and 3′,4′-disubstituted 5-benzyl-2,4-diaminopyrimidines as selective inhibitors of leishmanial and trypanosomal dihydrofolate reductase. Compounds were then assayed against the recombinant parasite and human enzymes. Some of the compounds showed good activity. They were also tested against the intact parasites using in vitro assays. Good activity was found against Trypanosoma cruzi, moderate activity against Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania donovani. Molecular modeling was undertaken to explain the results. The leishmanial enzyme was found to have a more extensive lipophilic binding region in the active site than the human enzyme. Compounds which bound within the pocket showed the highest selectivity.

The mesomorphic properties of these disc-like compounds were also studied in terms of liquid crystallinity. The orange nickel(II) complexes with ten soft alkoxy side chains exhibited columnar disordered mesophases, which were characterized based on DSC analysis and optical polarized microscopy. Nickel complexes with shorter side chains (n = 5-8) displayed a monotropic columnar rectangular disordered (Colrd) phase; however, complexes with longer side chains showed monotropic (n = 10) and enantiotropic (n = 12, 14) columnar hexagonal disordered (Colhd) phases. Similar nickel complexes (n = 14) with eight side chains exhibited a columnar hexagonal phase, whereas complexes (n= 14) with six side chains formed crystalline phases. The structures of these columnar disordered phases were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction. XRD data indicated that mesophase crossover from columnar rectangular (Colr) to hexagonal arrangements (Colh) was observed with increasing side chain lengths.

Liquid-crystalline complexes of palladium and platinum are formed when the metals are complexed to stilbazoles (4-styrylpyridines) bearing either two or three alkoxy chains. The complexes, termed polycatenar, show smectic C mesophases for most 3,4-disubstituted ligands, while the use of trisubstituted ligands leads to complexes showing columnar organisation, demonstrating that the spatial organisation of the metals in the liquid-crystal mesophase can be rather readily controlled. Complexes of these di- and tri-substituted stilbazoles with a cis-dicarbonylchloroiridium(I) fragment were not liquid crystalline.
