- Arene Trifunctionalization with Highly Fused Ring Systems through a Domino Aryne Nucleophilic and Diels–Alder Cascade
-
A convenient and efficient domino aryne process was developed under transition-metal-free conditions to generate a range of tetra- and pentacyclic ring systems. This transformation was realized via a 1,2-benzdiyne through a nucleophilic and Diels–Alder reaction cascade using styrene as the diene moiety. Three new chemical bonds, namely one C?N and two C?C bonds, and two benzofused rings could be constructed concomitantly, which was made possible by distinct chemoselective control at both the 1,2-aryne and 2,3-aryne stages. Moreover, in-depth studies were carried out on the domino aryne precursors and controlling the diastereoselectivity.

- Photocatalytic Oxyamination of Alkenes: Copper(II) Salts as Terminal Oxidants in Photoredox Catalysis
-
A photocatalytic method for the oxyamination of alkenes using simple nucleophilic nitrogen atom sources in place of prefunctionalized electrophilic nitrogen atom donors is reported. Copper(II) is an inexpensive, practical, and uniquely effective terminal oxidant for this process. In contrast to oxygen, peroxides, and similar oxidants commonly utilized in non-photochemical oxidative methods, the use of copper(II) as a terminal oxidant in photoredox reactions avoids the formation of reactive heteroatom-centered radical intermediates that can be incompatible with electron-rich functional groups. As a demonstration of the generality of this concept, it has been shown that diamination and deoxygenation reactions can also be accomplished using similar photooxidative conditions.

- Palladium-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidative Cyclization of Aliphatic Alkenyl Amides for the Construction of Pyrrolizidine and Indolizidine Derivatives
-
An efficient palladium-catalyzed aerobic oxidative cyclization has been developed to synthesize a variety of pyrrolizidine and indolizidine derivatives from simple aliphatic alkenyl amides in moderate to good yields. The reaction features the capability of accessing various N-heterocycles and the use of molecular oxygen (1 atm) as the green oxidant.

- Convenient route to primary (Z)-allyl amines and homologs
-
A convenient two-step procedure for the synthesis of primary (Z)-allyl amines, (Z)-homoallyl amines [(Z)-but-3-enylamines], and (Z)-pent-4-enylamines using the Wittig reaction was achieved. The use of nonstabilized ylides from triphenylphosphonium salt, potassium salt, and apolar solvent produced (Z/E)-geometric isomer ratios generally greater than 1.6. The amine moiety was masked using a phtalimide group that was removed successfully in the last step of the process in two different conditions, NH2NH2/EtOH/rt or CH3NH2/EtOH/rt. However, in some cases, reduction of the C = C double bond in the deprotection with hydrazine was concomitantly observed. Copyright Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

- Photophysical and photochemical behavior of intramolecular-styrene-amine exciplexes
-
The photophysical and photochemical behavior of a series of secondary and tertiary ω-(β-styryl)aminoalkanes with one to five methylenes separating the styryl and amino groups has been investigated and compared to the intermolecular reactions of 1-phenylpropene with secondary and tertiary amines. The tertiary styrylamines form fluorescent intramolecular exciplexes, but fail to undergo intramolecular addition reactions. Both the rate constant for exciplex formation and the stability of the exciplex are dependent upon the length of the polymethylene chain connecting the chromophores. The failure of the tertiary amine exciplexes to undergo intramolecular addition is attributed to an unfavorable exciplex geometry for α-C-H transfer to the styrene double bond. While the secondary styrylamines do not form fluorescent exciplexes, the dependence of the styrene singlet lifetime upon the polymethylene chain length is similar to that for the tertiary styrylamines. Intramolecular N-H addition to the styrene double bond results in the formation of two regioisomeric (α-phenyl and α-benzyl) cyclic amines of different ring size. The regioisomer of larger ring size is favored except in the case in which four methylenes separate the chromophores. The effects of polymethylene chain length, solvent polarity, temperature, and the bulk of the N-alkyl group upon product yields and ratios are discussed in terms of a mechanism involving singlet exciplex and biradical intermediates.
