Glyceryl ether compounds prepared by the reaction of glycerol and olefin epoxides are disclosed. The compounds are renewable biomass-based surfactants useful as detergents and emulsifiers in formulations for cleaning, laundry, personal care, cosmetics, and industrial uses.

A compound of formula STR1 where R1 and R2 are independently a C1 -C10 aliphatic radical, or R1 is a C1 -C10 aliphatic radical and R2 is a C6 -C10 aromatic radical, and R3 is a C1 -C8 aliphatic radical, a C3 -C8 cycloaliphatic radical, a C6 -C15 aromatic radical or a C7 -C13 araliphatic radical, provided that R3 is not methyl when R1 and R2 are each methyl, that R3 is not ethyl when R1 and R2 are each methyl and that R2 is not p-aminophenyl when R1 is methyl and R3 is ethyl.
