- 2-Methoxy-5-alkoxy-2,5-dihydrofurans: New useful polyfunctionalized C4 building blocks
-
The first one step synthesis of 2-methoxy-5-alkoxy-2,5-dihydrofurans (2a-i) is reported by reacting the commercially available 2,5-dimethoxy derivative (1) with alcohols. Unexpectedly the use of thiophenol and of cis- 2,4-but-2-enediol leads to 2-furyl phenyl thioether (4) and cis-2-propenal- 1,3-dioxep-5-ene (5), respectively.

- Pd-Catalyzed Double-Decarbonylative Aryl Sulfide Synthesis through Aryl Exchange between Amides and Thioesters
-
We report the palladium-catalyzed double-decarbonylative synthesis of aryl thioethers by an aryl exchange reaction between amides and thioesters. In this method, amides serve as aryl donors and thioesters are sulfide donors, enabling the synthesis of valuable aryl sulfides. The use of Pd/Xantphos without any additives has been identified as the catalytic system promoting the aryl exchange by C(O)-N/C(O)-S cleavages. The method is amenable to a wide variety of amides and sulfides.

- Rh(I)-Catalyzed Intramolecular Decarbonylation of Thioesters
-
Decarbonylative synthesis of thioethers from thioesters proceeds in the presence of a catalytic amount of [Rh(cod)Cl]2 (2 mol %). The protocol represents the first Rh-catalyzed decarbonylative thioetherification of thioesters to yield valuable thioethers. Notable features include the absence of phosphine ligands, inorganic bases, and other additives and excellent group tolerance to aryl chlorides and bromides that are problematic using other metals to promote decarbonylation. Gram scale synthesis, late-stage pharmaceutical derivatization, and orthogonal site-selective cross-couplings by C-S/C-Br cleavage are reported.

- Synthesis of thioethers, arenes and arylated benzoxazoles by transformation of the C(aryl)-C bond of aryl alcohols
-
Transformation of aryl alcohols into high-value functionalized aromatic compounds by selective cleavage and functionalization of the C(aryl)-C(OH) bond is of crucial importance, but very challenging by far. Herein, for the first time, we report a novel and versatile strategy for activation and functionalization of C(aryl)-C(OH) bonds by the cooperation of oxygenation and decarboxylative functionalization. A diverse range of aryl alcohol substrates were employed as arylation reagents via the cleavage of C(aryl)-C(OH) bonds and effectively converted into corresponding thioether, arene, and arylated benzoxazole products in excellent yields, in a Cu based catalytic system using O2 as the oxidant. This study offers a new way for aryl alcohol conversion and potentially offers a new opportunity to produce high-value functionalized aromatics from renewable feedstocks such as lignin which features abundant C(aryl)-C(OH) bonds in its linkages.

- Metal-free C-H thioarylation of arenes using sulfoxides: A direct, general diaryl sulfide synthesis
-
Metal-free C-H thioarylation of arenes and heteroarenes using methyl sulfoxides constitutes a general protocol for the synthesis of high value diaryl sulfides. The coupling of arenes and heteroarenes with in situ activated sulfoxides is regioselective, uses readily available starting materials, is operationally simple, and tolerates a wide range of functional groups.

- Thioetherification of Chloroheteroarenes: A Binuclear Catalyst Promotes Wide Scope and High Functional-Group Tolerance
-
A constrained binuclear palladium catalyst system affords selective thioetherification of a wide range of functionalized arenethiols with chloroheteroaromatic partners with the highest turnover numbers (TONs) reported to date and tolerates a large variety of reactive functions. The scope of this system includes the coupling of thiophenols with six- and five-membered 2-chloroheteroarenes (i.e., functionalized pyridine, pyrazine, quinoline, pyrimidine, furane, and thiazole) and 3-bromoheteroarenes (i.e., pyridine and furane). Electron-rich congested thiophenols and fluorinated thiophenols are also suitable partners. The coupling of unprotected amino-2-chloropyridines with thiophenol and the successful employment of synthetically valuable chlorothiophenols are described with the same catalyst system. DFT studies attribute the high performance of this binuclear palladium catalyst to the decreased stability of thiolate-containing resting states. Palladium loading was as low as 0.2 mol %, which is important for industrial application and is a step forward in solving catalyst activation/deactivation problems.

- Chan-lam-type s-arylation of thiols with boronic acids at room temperature
-
In this work, an efficient CuSO4-catalyzed S-arylation of thiols with aryl and heteroaryl boronic acids at room temperature is established. This catalytic system can tolerate a wide variety of thiols and arylboronic acids in the presence of only 5 mol % of CuSO4 as the catalyst and inexpensive 1,10-phen?H2O as the ligand. Moreover, this catalytic system used environment-friendly solvent (EtOH) and oxidant (oxygen).

- Deprotonative metalation of substituted benzenes and heteroaromatics using amino/alkyl mixed lithium-zinc combinations
-
Different homoleptic and heteroleptic lithium-zinc combinations were prepared, and structural elements obtained on the basis of NMR spectroscopic experiments and DFT calculations. In light of their ability to metalate anisole, pathways were proposed to justify the synergy observed for some mixtures. The best basic mixtures were obtained either by combining ZnCl 2·TMEDA (TMEDA = N,N,N',N'tetramethylethylenediamine) with [Li(tmp)] (tmp = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidino; 3 equiv) or by replacing one of the tmp in the precedent mixture with an alkyl group. The reactivity of the aromatic lithium zincates supposedly formed was next studied, and proved to be substrate-, base-, and electrophile-dependent. The aromatic lithium zincates were finally involved in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with aromatic chlorides and bromides.

- Cobalt-catalyzed aryl-sulfur bond formation
-
A new cobalt-catalyzed coupling of aryl halides with thiophenols and alkanethiols is reported. A variety of aryl sulfides can be prepared in excellent yields under mild reaction conditions using 1-2 mol % of Col2(dppe) and Zn. This new cobalt-catalyzed coupling represents an interesting addition to previously known methods to synthesize thioethers.

- An analysis of substituent effects on 1H and 13C NMR parameters of substituted furans. Linear free energy relationships and PM3 semiempirical calculations
-
Forty five furans have been obtained in a synthetic project designed to evaluate monothiosubstituted furans as potential food flavourings. A full NMR (1H and 13C) study and PM3 molecular orbital semiempirical calculations have been carried out. Substituent-induced chemical shifts (SCS) for six and nine substituents at the 2- and 3-positions have been calculated and a separation of inductive and resonance effects of these substituents has been proposed. Finally, a linear correlation between the net atomic charges localized at ring carbons and their 13C NMR chemical shifts has been established.

- Intramolecular Diels-Alder Reaction of Furans with Allenyl Ethers Followed by Phenylthio and Trialkylsilyl Groups Rearrangement
-
A new reaction involving an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of a furan diene with an allenyl ether dienophile followed by phenylthio group rearrangement was discovered. Treatment of the propargyl ethers 2a-c with t-BuOK in t-BuOH at 85°C gave the phenylthio group rearrangement products 5a-c and 6a-c. A reaction involving an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of a furan diene with an allenyl ether dienophile followed by trialkylsilyl group rearrangement is also demonstrated.

- THERMAL REACTIVITY OF 4'SUBSTITUTED- AND 4'-SUBSTITUTED-2-PHENYL-BENZENESUPHENANILIDES
-
The thermal decomposition of 4'-nitro, 4'-H, and 4'-methoxy-benzenesulphenanilides in benzene and/or furan, and of 4'-substituted-2-phenylbenzenesulphenanilides ( 1d-1f ) in benzene, was found to proceed by two distinct pathways: ( i ) nucleophilic displacement by furan and/or another sulphenanilide unit and ( ii ) homolytic S-N bond fission to give sulphenyl and anilino radicals. An increase in the electron-withdrawning capability of the 4'-substituted favours the ionic pathway, whwreas the radical pathway is favoured by an increase in the reaction temperature.

- A General Approach to 4-Substitution of 2-Alkylfurans
-
Treatment of 2-alkylfurans with butyllithium followed by diphenyl disulfide yields 2-(phenylthio)-5-alkylfurans.When the 2-(phenylthio)-3-bromo-5-alkylfurans arising by bromination of the latter are treated with tert-butyllithium, the corresponding 3-lithio derivative is produced and it can be trapped by electrophiles such as alkyl iodides, aldehydes, trimethylsilyl chloride, and carbon dioxide.Raney nickel desulfurization of the product of such trapping produces 4-substituted-2-alkylfurans.
