- Method for preparing olefine aldehyde through catalytic oxidation of enol ether
-
The invention relates to the technical field of olefine aldehyde preparation, and provides a method for preparing olefine aldehyde through catalytic oxidation of enol ether. According to the invention, a palladium catalyst, a copper salt, a solvent and enol ether are mixed and subjected to a catalytic oxidation reaction to obtain olefine aldehyde. According to the method, the copper salt is used as the oxidizing agent, the mixed solvent of water and acetonitrile is used as the reaction solvent, and the volume ratio of water to acetonitrile in the mixed solvent is controlled to be (3-7): (3-7), so that the catalytic oxidation reaction can be smoothly carried out in the mixed solvent with a specific ratio, and the generation of palladium black precipitate can be avoided. The method provided by the invention has the advantages of simple steps, low reagent cost, no need of dangerous reagents, wide substrate adaptability and small catalyst dosage. Furthermore, octadecane mercaptan is added to promote the catalytic oxidation reaction, and when the dosage of the palladium catalyst is extremely low, the olefine aldehyde yield can be greatly increased by adding octadecane mercaptan.

- A TEMPO-Functionalized Ordered Mesoporous Polymer as a Highly Active and Reusable Organocatalyst
-
The properties of high stability, periodic porosity, and tunable nature of ordered mesoporous polymers make these materials ideal catalytic nanoreactors. However, their application in organocatalysis has been rarely explored. We report herein for the first time the incorporation of a versatile organocatalyst, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO), into the pores of an FDU-type mesoporous polymer via a pore surface engineering strategy. The resulting FDU-15-TEMPO possesses a highly ordered mesoporous organic framework and enhanced stability, and shows excellent catalytic activity in the selective oxidation of alcohols and aerobic oxidative synthesis of 2-substituted benzoxazoles, benzimidazoles and benzothiazoles. Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for up to 7 consecutive cycles.

- Selective Rhodium-Catalyzed Hydroformylation of Terminal Arylalkynes and Conjugated Enynes to (Poly)enals Enabled by a π-Acceptor Biphosphoramidite Ligand
-
The hydroformylation of terminal arylalkynes and enynes offers a straightforward synthetic route to the valuable (poly)enals. However, the hydroformylation of terminal alkynes has remained a long-standing challenge. Herein, an efficient and selective Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation of terminal arylalkynes and conjugated enynes has been achieved by using a new stable biphosphoramidite ligand with strong π-acceptor capacity, which affords various important E-(poly)enals in good yields with excellent chemo- and regioselectivity at low temperatures and low syngas pressures.

A highly efficient and practical Pd(II)/Cu(OAc)2-catalyst system of Saegusa oxidation, which converts enol ethers to the corresponding enals with a number of diverse substrates at extremely low catalyst loadings (500 mol ppm) under ligand-free and aqueous conditions, is described. Its synthetic utility was demonstrated by large-scale applications of the catalyst system to important nature molecules. This work allows Saegusa oxidation to become a highly practical approach to preparing enals and also suggests new insight into the Pd(II)/Cu(II)-catalyst system for dehydrogenation of carbonyl compounds and decreasing Pd-catalyst loadings.

- Fischer Carbene Pentannulation with Alkynes Having Adjacent Carbonate or Acyloxy Groups: Synthesis of 3-Substituted 1-Indanones
-
Various aryl Fischer carbenes reacted with alkynes having adjacent acyloxy or carbonate groups to regioselectively deliver 3-substituted 1-indanones. The acyloxy or carbonate group probably coordinates with the Cr metal to give a tetra-coordinated chromium complex forming a six-membered ring that retards CO insertion for ketene formation, which is required for benzannulation. Alternatively, the ortho position aryl ring attack results in pentannulation, providing regioselectively 3-substituted 1-indanones. The method is extended to the synthesis of the core structure of 3-epi-mutisianthol.

- Dihydropyrimidinones: Efficient one-pot green synthesis using Montmorillonite-KSF and evaluation of their cytotoxic activity
-
A simple, efficient, cost-effective, recyclable and green approach has been developed for the synthesis of new dihydropyrimidinone analogs via the Biginelli reaction. The methodology involves a multicomponent reaction catalyzed by "HPA-Montmorillonite-KSF"as a reusable and heterogeneous catalyst. This method gives an efficient and much improved modification of the original Biginelli reaction, in terms of yield and short reaction times under solvent free conditions. All the derivatives were subjected to cytotoxicity screening against a panel of four different human cancer cell lines viz. colon (Colo-205), prostate (PC-3), leukemia (THP-1) and lung (A549) to check their effect on percentage growth. MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-yl)-diphenyl tetrazoliumbromide] cytotoxicity assay was employed to check IC50 values. Of the synthesized analogs, 16a showed the best activity with IC50 of 7.1 ± 0.8, 13.1 ± 1.4, 13.8 ± 0.9 and 14.7 ± 1.1 μM against lung (A549), leukemia (THP-1), prostate (PC-3) and colon (Colo-205) cancer lines, respectively. The 16a analog was further checked for its effect on cancer cell properties through clonogenic (colony formation) and scratch motility (wound healing) assays and thereby was found that it reduced both the colony formation and migratory properties of the lung cancer cell line (A549). Further, molecular docking studies were performed with 16a to show its binding mode. This journal is

- Study of the Features of the Reaction of Arylcyclopropanes with Nitrozonium Ethyl Sulfate or Nitrozonium Tetrafluoroborate
-
Abstract: The reactions of diaryl-, aryl-, and alkyl–arylcyclopropanes with ethyl nitrite in the presence of sulfur trioxide and sulfur trioxide dioxane complex, as well as the reactions of 1-alkyl-2-arylcyclopropanes with NOBF4 were studied. It was found that the attack of the nitrosonium cation, accompanied by the formation of a benzyl carbocation, leads to the formation of isoxazolines. The introduction of bulky alkyl substituents into the cyclopropane ring changes the regioselectivity of nitrosation, favoring the attack of the electrophilic particle on the benzyl position and leading to the competitive formation of an alkyl carbocation. Depending on the structure of the alkyl substituent, both products of intramolecular heterocyclization accompanied by skeletal rearrangements and products formed with the participation of an external nucleophile are formed.

- Water-soluble 4-hydroxystyryl and 4-hydroxyphenyl-butadienyls dyes with switchable fluorescence
-
Fluorescent 4-hydroxystyryl dyes are useful for many biomedical and pharmaceutical assays, and other analyte sensing applications. However, these dyes often suffer from limited applicability in analytical and bioanalytical utilization due to insufficient water-solubility, high acid-ionization constants (pKa) and short-wavelength absorption and emission. To solve these issues, a series of new, water-soluble 4-hydroxystyryl and longer-wavelength 4-hydroxyphenyl-butadienyl dyes were synthesized and the spectral and protolytic properties were studied. These new dyes contain electron-withdrawing substituents ortho to the triggering 4-hydroxyl group. The introduction of the cyano and formyl groups was found to decrease the pKa and extend the pH-sensing region of these fluorophores. In respect of the molecular structure, these dyes exhibit either a “turn-on” activatable fluorescence, or a dual-fluorescence that enables ratiometric measurements. The 4-hydroxyphenyl-butadienyl dye was evaluated for fluorescence monitoring of drug delivery. These new dyes are promising fluorophores for acidity measurements and other sensing applications.

- Boosting multiple photo-assisted and temperature controlled reactions with a single redox-switchable catalyst: Solvents as internal substrates and reducing agent
-
An alternative and economically viable process for the synthesis of β-aryl enals, enones and the aryl amines has been developed by partial oxidation of ethanol, isopropanol and N, N-dimethyl formamide (DMF). The formation of β-aryl enals, enones and the aryl amines was catalyzed by a mixed metal oxides layer of cobalt and chromium supported on halloysite nanotubes, designated as CoCr2O4-HNT. The C[sbnd]C and C[sbnd]N bond formation reactions were found to be influenced by temperature and the nature of base. The condensation of aldehyde with in situ generated acetaldehyde by ethanol oxidation forming β-aryl enals occurred selectively at 120 °C. The partial oxidation of isopropanol to acetone and its condensation with aldehydes forming β-aryl enones occurred at room temperature. Increase in temperature caused the liberation of hydrogen gas from isopropanol and allowed the reversible reduction of aldehydes to alcohols. Increase in temperature in isopropanol and increase in base concentration in ethanol causes the selective reduction of aldehydes to alcohols. Besides being active for the Claisen-Schmidt type of reactions and the aryl halides amination process, the synthesized catalyst was also found to be highly active for the photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohols in absence of any external oxidizing agent. The positive holes (h+) generated at the Co(II) site as evident from EPR analysis was considered to be responsible for high photocatalytic activity of the material reducing the recombination rate of holes and electrons (e?). Density Functional Theory calculations were performed to understand the mechanism of ethanol oxidation to acetaldehyde.

- Organophotoredox-Mediated Amide Synthesis by Coupling Alcohol and Amine through Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohol
-
The combination of an organic photocatalyst [4CzIPN (1,2,3,5-tetrakis(carbazol-9-yl)-4,6 dicyanobenzene) or 5MeOCzBN (2,3,4,5,6-pentakis(3,6-dimethoxy-9 H-carbazol-9-yl)benzonitrile)], quinuclidine, and tetra-n-butylammonium phosphate (hydrogen-bonding catalyst) was employed for amide bond formations. The hydrogen-bonded OH group activated the adjacent C?H bond of alcohols towards hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) by a radical species. The quinuclidinium radical cation, generated through single-electron oxidation of quinuclidine by the photocatalyst, employed to abstract a hydrogen atom from the α-C?H bond of alcohols selectively due to a polarity effect-produced α-hydroxyalkyl radical, which subsequently converted to the corresponding aldehyde under aerobic conditions. Then the coupling of the aldehyde and an amine formed a hemiaminal intermediate that upon photocatalytic oxidation produced the amide.

- Microwave-Assisted oxidation reaction of primary alcohols with sensitive functional groups to aldehydes using Ruthenium Diphosphorus Complexes
-
Microwave-assisted oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes is described using complexes with bidentate diphosphorus-xanthene ligands coordinated to Ru. The reactions took place readily at 120°C with 1 mol% catalyst loading that was generated in situ from the added [Ru(H)2(PPh3)3(CO)] and diphosphine ligands. The aldehyde yields for the benzylic alcohols were in the range 50-100%, while aliphatic alcohols gave yields of 48- 74%. For the first time, oxidation reactions under solvent-free conditions using these ligands are also presented, making the reaction greener. Other metals were also tested, and it was found that changing the metal center to Ir, Rh, or Os results in complexes that showed minimal or no activity towards the desired product.

- Chemoselective Catalytic α-Oxidation of Carboxylic Acids: Iron/Alkali Metal Cooperative Redox Active Catalysis
-
We developed a chemoselective catalytic activation of carboxylic acid for a 1e- radical process. α-Oxidation of a variety of carboxylic acids, which preferentially undergo undesired decarboxylation under radical conditions, proceeded efficiently under the optimized conditions. Chemoselective enolization of carboxylic acid was also achieved even in the presence of more acidic carbonyls. Extensive mechanistic studies revealed that the cooperative actions of iron species and alkali metal ions derived from 4 ? molecular sieves substantially facilitated the enolization. For the first time, catalytic enolization of unprotected carboxylic acid was achieved without external addition of stoichiometric amounts of Br?nsted base. The formed redox-active heterobimetallic enediolate efficiently coupled with free radical TEMPO, providing synthetically useful α-hydroxy and keto acid derivatives.

- Highly efficient and practical aerobic oxidation of alcohols by inorganic-ligand supported copper catalysis
-
The oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones is a highly relevant conversion for the pharmaceutical and fine-chemical industries, and for biomass conversion, and is commonly performed using stoichiometric amounts of highly hazardous oxidants. The aerobic oxidation of alcohols with transition metal complex catalysts previously required complicated organic ligands and/or nitroxyl radicals as co-catalysts. Herein, we report an efficient and eco-friendly method to promote the aerobic oxidation of alcohols using an inorganic-ligand supported copper catalyst 1, (NH4)4[CuMo6O18(OH)6], with O2 (1 atm) as the sole oxidant. Catalyst 1 is synthesized directly from cheap and commonly available (NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O and CuSO4, which consists of a pure inorganic framework built from a central CuII core supported by six MoVIO6 inorganic scaffolds. The copper catalyst 1 exhibits excellent selectivity and activity towards a wide range of substrates in the catalytic oxidation of alcohols, and can avoid the use of toxic oxidants, nitroxyl radicals, and potentially air/moisture sensitive and complicated organic ligands that are not commercially available. Owing to its robust inorganic framework, catalyst 1 shows good stability and reusability, and the catalytic oxidation of alcohols with catalyst 1 could be readily scaled up to gram scale with little loss of catalytic activity, demonstrating great potential of the inorganic-ligand supported Cu catalysts in catalytic chemical transformations.

- Pd-Au-Y as Efficient Catalyst for C-C Coupling Reactions, Benzylic C-H Bond Activation, and Oxidation of Ethanol for Synthesis of Cinnamaldehydes
-
Pd-Au nanoalloy supported on zeolite-Y (Pd-Au-Y) matrix was found to be an effective catalyst for C-Cl bond activation and oxidative coupling of 2-naphthol, leading to the formation of various biaryl products and 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol, BINOL. The same catalyst was also highly efficient for selective oxidation of benzylic alcohols to benzaldehydes. Cinnamaldehydes were obtained directly from benzaldehydes by aldol condensation with acetaldehyde generated in situ by partial oxidation of ethanol in the presence of Pd-Au-Y catalyst at 120 °C under basic condition. The biaryl products were also obtained directly from benzylic alcohols in a one-pot system by reacting with phenylboronic acid. The formation of biaryls from benzylic alcohols was believed to occur via one-pot benzylic C-H and C-Cl bond activation. A high % yield of biaryls, BINOL, aldehydes, and cinnamaldehydes was obtained by performing different reactions using the single Pd-Au-Y catalyst. The strong interaction of chloro-benzylic alcohol was predominantly located at active gold species. X-ray photoelectron and diffuse reflectance spectroscopic studies revealed the strong interaction between Pd and Au particles. Electrochemical studies provided proper evidence for the individual role of the nanoparticles (NPs) in one-pot synthesis of biaryls from benzylic alcohols.

- Design, synthesis, molecular modelling, and in vitro evaluation of tricyclic coumarins against Trypanosoma cruzi
-
Chagas disease is caused by infection with the parasite protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi and affects about 8 million people in 21 countries in Latin America. The main form of treatment of this disease is still based on the use of two drugs, benznidazole and nifurtimox, which both present low cure rates in the chronic phase and often have serious side-effects. Herein, we describe the synthesis of tricyclic coumarins that were obtained via NHC organocatalysis and evaluation of their trypanocidal activity. Molecular docking studies against trypanosomal enzyme triosephosphate isomerase (TIM) were carried out, as well as a theoretical study of the physicochemical parameters. The tricyclic coumarins were tested in vitro against the intracellular forms of Trypanosoma cruzi. Among the 18 compounds tested, 10 were more active than the reference drug benznidazole. The trypanocidal activity of the lead compound was rationalized by molecular docking study which suggested the strong interaction with the enzyme TIM by T.?cruzi and therefore indicating a possible mode of action. Furthermore, the selectivity index of eight tricyclic coumarins with high anti-T.?cruzi activity was above 50 and thus showing that these lead compounds are viable candidates for further in vivo assays.

- Enantioselective Organocatalytic Enamine C?H Oxidation/Diels- Alder Reaction
-
α,β-unsaturated aldehydes have been traditionally used in LUMO lowering asymmetric aminocatalysis (iminium catalysis), while the use of saturated aldehydes as substrates in this type of catalysis has been elusive, until recently. Herein, we demonstrate that organic, single-electron oxidants in the presence of diarylprolinol silylether type catalysts serve as effective tools for the transformation of electron rich enamines to iminium ions which partake in a subsequent Diels-Alder reaction. This enantioselective one-pot transformation represents the first example of saturated aldehydes being used in domino Diels-Alder reaction processes and demonstrates the power of this protocol for construction of stereo-defined chiral compounds and building blocks. - Iron(III)/O2-Mediated Regioselective Oxidative Cleavage of 1-Arylbutadienes to Cinnamaldehydes
-
A simple, efficient, and environmentally benevolent regioselective oxidative cleavage of 1-arylbutadienes to cinnamaldehydes mediated by iron(III) sulfate/O2 has been developed. The reaction offered good yields and excellent regioselectivity and showed good functional group tolerance (31 examples). The method is important, as few reports with limited substrate scope are available for such excellent oxidative cleavage of conjugated dienes.

- Donor Rhodium Carbenes by Retro-Buchner Reaction
-
Rhodium carbenes are key intermediates in a range of cycloadditions and insertion reactions. Herein, we report the first generation of donor RhII carbenes by decarbenation of 7-substituted 1,3,5-cycloheptatrienes. This discovery unlocks an improved retro-Buchner-cyclopropanation sequence, a Si?H insertion reaction for a broad-scope synthesis of allylsilanes, and a new method for the vinylogation of aldehydes. The last strategy led to the development of an iterative synthesis of E-polyenes, and to the total synthesis of navenones B and C.

- Discovery of novel piperonyl derivatives as diapophytoene desaturase inhibitors for the treatment of methicillin-, vancomycin- and linezolid-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections
-
Inhibition of S. aureus diapophytoene desaturase (CrtN) could serve as an alternative approach for addressing the tricky antibiotic resistance by blocking the biosynthesis of carotenoid pigment which shields the bacterium from host oxidant killing. In this study, we designed and synthesized 44 derivatives with piperonyl scaffold targeting CrtN and the structure-activity relationships (SARs) were examined extensively to bring out the discovery of 21b with potent efficacy and better hERG safety profile compared to the first class CrtN inhibitor benzocycloalkane derivative 2. Except the excellent pigment inhibitory activity against wild-type S. aureus, 21b also showed excellent pigment inhibition against four pigmented MRSA strains. In addition, H2O2 killing and human whole blood killing assays proved 21b could sensitize S. aureus to be killed under oxidative stress conditions. Notably, the murine study in vivo validated the efficacy of 21b against pigmented S. aureus Newman, vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus Mu50 and linezolid-resistant S. aureus NRS271.

- Palladium-Catalyzed Regioselective Aerobic Allylic C?H Oxygenation: Direct Synthesis of α,β-Unsaturated Aldehydes and Allylic Alcohols
-
A protocol for the synthesis of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and allylic alcohols from simple allylic hydrocarbons with water via palladium-catalyzed functionalization of allylic C?H bonds was described. Molecular oxygen is utilized as the sole oxidant in this oxygenation of terminal alkenes. This protocol features good functional group compatibility, broad substrate scope, and high atom- and step-economy. Moreover, the synthetic utility of this method can be highlighted by its application to the synthesis of ibuprofen, which is a highly potent analgesic. (Figure presented.).

Diazonium salts, and precisely arenediazonium o-benzenedisulfonimides, have been used for the first time as efficient electrophilic partners in gold catalyzed Heck-coupling reactions. The synthetic protocol was general, easy and gave the target products in satisfactory yields. Mechanistic insights revealed the fundamental roles of the o-benzenedisulfonimide anion as an electron transfer agent thath promotes a radical pathway that does not require the presence of photocatalysts or external oxidants.

- Palladium-Catalyzed Cascade Double C—N Bond Activation: A New Strategy for Aminomethylation of 1,3-Dienes with Aminals
-
A new palladium-catalyzed selective aminomethylation of conjugated 1,3-dienes with aminals via double C—N bond activation is described. This simple method provides an effective and rapid approach for the synthesis of linear α,β-unsaturated allylic amines with perfect regioselectivity. Mechanistic studies disclosed that one palladium catalyst cleaved two distinct C—N bond to furnish a cascade double C—N bond activation, in which an allylic 1,3-diamine and allylic 1,2-diamine were initially formed as key intermediates through the palladium-catalyzed C—N bond activation of aminal and the α,β-unsaturated allylic amine was subsequently produced via palladium-catalyzed C—N bond activation of the allylic diamines.

- Hendrickson reagent induced rearrangement of aryl propargyl alcohols to α,β-unsaturated aldehydes
-
The Hendrickson reagent (triphenylphosphonium anhydride trifluoromethanesulfonate), prepared from the reaction of triphenylphosphine oxide (Ph3PO) and triflic anhydride (Tf2O) (2:1 stoichiometry), promotes dehydrations and various coupling reactions. The reagent has been used to transform oximes to nitriles and to prepare esters, amides and many other functional groups through the intermediacy of an alkoxyphosphonium salt. The reagent proved useful in heterocycle synthesis of thiazolines, imidazolines, quinoline precursors, isoquinolines, β-carbolines, phenanthridines, 11H-indolo[3,2-c]quinolines, quinoline-lactones, furoquinolinones, and indolizino[1,2-b]quinolin-9(11H)-ones. Moreover, the reagent has been key to the successful total synthesis of several natural products. Aryl propargyl alcohols with a terminal α-acetylenic group undergo rapid conversion to the corresponding α,β-unsaturated aldehydes at room temperature in dichloromethane in the presence of one equivalent of triphenylphosphonium anhydride trifluoromethanesulfonate. The reaction involved adding freshly distilled Tf2O (1.0 mmol) to a solution of Ph3PO (2.0 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (10 mL) at 0oC under N2 atmosphere. After stirring for 10 min, the propargyl alcohol (1.0 mmol) was added as a CH2Cl2 solution (2 mL), followed by the addition of water and Et3N (2.0 mmol) and further stirring at room temperature for 1h. Subsequent workup with 5% NaHCO3 (20 mL) and purification afforded α,β-unsaturated aldehydes. Eighteen aryl propargyl alcohol substrates with a terminal α-acetylenic group were transformed in good to excellent yields (71-85%) to enals. The methodology proved successful with secondary and tertiary alcohols with stereoselectivity favouring exclusively the E isomer. All the synthesized compounds are known and were characterized (1H,13C, and M.P) and compared to literature values. The method offers several advantages such as exclusive stereoselectivity, short reaction time, good yield, mild reaction conditions, and simple operational procedure.

- New Class of Anion-Accelerated Amino-Cope Rearrangements as Gateway to Diverse Chiral Structures
-
We report useful new lithium-assisted asymmetric anion-accelerated amino-Cope rearrangement cascades. A strategic nitrogen atom chiral auxiliary serves three critical roles, by (1) enabling in situ assembly of the chiral 3-amino-1,5-diene precursor, (2) facilitating the rearrangement via a lithium enolate chelate, and (3) imparting its influence on consecutive inter- or intramolecular C-C or C-X bond-forming events via resulting chiral enamide intermediates or imine products. The mechanism of the amino-Cope rearrangement was explored with density functional theory. A stepwise dissociation-recombination mechanism was found to be favored. The stereochemistry of the chiral auxiliary determines the stereochemistry of the Cope product by influencing the orientation of the lithium dienolate and sulfinylimine fragments in the recombination step. These robust asymmetric anion-accelerated amino-Cope enabled cascades open the door for rapid and predictable assembly of complex chiral acyclic and cyclic nitrogen-containing motifs in one pot.

- Stabilization and activation of unstable propynal in the zeolite nanospace and its application to addition reactions
-
Propynal (HC≡C-CHO), having both a C≡C triple bond and a formyl group in a molecule, is a promising building block but its labile property to easily polymerize often narrows its application for organic synthesis. In a similar way to unstable molecules, such as formaldehyde and acrolein, propynal is also stabilized and remains unchanged in supercages of Na-Y zeolite for over 30 days at ambient temperature. There, the carbonyl oxygen atoms of propynal coordinate to sodium ions in Na-Y which was proved by a 13C-DD/MAS-NMR analysis. In addition, propynal adsorbed in zeolite is sufficiently activated to allow unprecedented reactions; i.e., (1) a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with electron-deficient α-diazocarbonyl compounds, (2) a 1,4-addition with mono-, di-, and trimethoxy-substituted benzenes, and (3) a [2 + 2] cycloaddition of unactivated cycloalkenes. The nanospace of the zeolites keeps the products from dimerization during reaction (1) and from successive side-reactions in reaction (2). Quantum chemical calculations demonstrated that reaction (3) proceeds via a one-step-like non-concerted mechanism to afford the corresponding [2 + 2] cycloadducts. These three reactions can produce valuable synthetic intermediates retaining both a formyl group and a C=C double bond.

- Heck arylation of allyl alcohol catalyzed by Pd(0) nanoparticles
-
Pd(0) nanoparticles ca. 2 nm in diameter were obtained by the reduction of PdCl2 and Pd(OAc)2 in water at 80 °C in the presence of a PVP-stabilizing polymer. Pd(0) NPs were successfully used in the Heck coupling of allyl alcohol with iodo- and bromobenzenes. Iodobenzenes reacted under solventless conditions or in DMF solution producing 3-arylpropanals and 2-arylpropanals as the main products. The same products were obtained in the reaction of bromobenzene in TBAB as the reaction medium. The stability of Pd(0) NPs was evidenced in recycling experiments. Similar Heck coupling results were also obtained with the palladium compounds PdCl2(cod) and Pd(OAc)2 under the same conditions.
