- Heterobimetallic Pd/Mn and Pd/Co complexes as efficient and stereoselective catalysts for sequential Cu-free Sonogashira coupling–alkyne semi-hydrogenation reactions
-
A series of heterobimetallic PdII/MII complexes (MII = Mn, Co) were synthesised and tested as precatalysts for sequential Sonogashira coupling–alkyne semi-hydrogenation reactions to form Z-aryl alkenes. The carbometalated heterobimetallic PdII/CoII complex CoPdL3′ demonstrated an apparent cooperative effect compared to the corresponding monometallic counterparts. This compound was identified as a potent single-molecule catalyst for the one-pot Cu-free Sonogashira coupling of aryl bromides with terminal alkynes followed by chemo- and stereoselective semi-hydrogenation of the alkyne intermediate using NH3·BH3 as a hydrogen source. Furthermore, different aromatic substrates have been tested to show the generality of the reaction for the synthesis of Z-alkenes, including biologically active combretastatin A-4. In addition, the homogeneous nature of the catalytically active species was demonstrated.

- The two faces of platinum hydrospirophosphorane complexes—Not only relevant catalysts but cytotoxic compounds as well
-
Platinum complexes [PtCl2(L)] L = L1, L2 with symmetrical HP (OCH2CMe2NH)2 (L1) and unsymmetrical HP(OCMe2CMe2O)(OCH2CMe2NH) (L2) hydrospirophosphorane (HSP) ligands were demonstrated to play a dual role of catalysts and cytotoxic compounds as well. The structure of new complex [PtCl2(L2)] was confirmed by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods, as well as single X-ray diffraction studies for [PtCl2{P (OCMe2CMe2O)(OCH2CMe2NH2)}]. HSP ligand coordinated to the platinum center in bidentate κ2-P,NH2 chelating mode of fashion. Both complexes were found to exhibit catalytic activity for Heck cross-coupling reactions of iodobenzene with substituted styrenes, with good conversion and yield of stilbenes. Moreover, complexes have been applied as excellent catalysts for highly regioselective hydrosilylation of aromatic and aliphatic terminal olefins, and acetylenes terminal and internal as well. On the other hand, the preliminary biological studies revealed that in the presence of foretinib, drug candidate in clinical trials for the treatment of cancer, platinum complexes revealed increased synergistic effect and efficiently decreased the number of viable cells of triple negative breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cell line.

- Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling of Organostibines with Styrenes to Give Unsymmetric (E)-Stilbenes and (1 E,3 E)-1,4-Diarylbuta-1,3-dienes and Fluorescence Properties of the Products
-
A general and effective palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of organostibines with styrenes to give (E)-olefins was disclosed. By the use of an organostibine reagent, this method can produce unsymmetric (E)-1,2-diarylethylenes and (1E,3E)-1,4-diarylbuta-1,3-dienes in good yields with high E/Z selectivity and good functional group tolerance. Resveratrol and DMU-212 were synthesized in high yield. The protocol can be extended to the synthesis of (1E,3E,5E)-1,6-diphenylhexa-1,3,5-triene in 40% yield. Products 5e, 5f, and 7a showed good photoluminescence quantum yields ranging from 72 to 99%.

- Mizoroki-Heck Reaction of Unstrained Aryl Ketones via Ligand-Promoted C-C Bond Olefination
-
Mizoroki-Heck reaction of unstrained aryl ketone with acrylate/styrene is accomplished via palladium-catalyzed ligand-promoted C-C bond cleavage. Various (hetero)aryl ketones are compatible in the reaction, affording the alkene product in good to excellent yields. Further applications in the late-stage olefination of some drugs, natural products, and fragrance-derived aryl ketones demonstrate the synthetic utility of this protocol. By employing ketone as both the directing group and the leaving group, 1,2-bifunctionalization is achieved via sequential ortho-C-H alkylation/ipso-Heck olefination.

- Tandem Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Coupling-Decyanation under Nickel Catalysis
-
The development of new catalytic processes based on abundantly available starting materials by cheap metals is always a fascinating task and marks an important transition in the chemical industry. Herein, a nickel-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with nitriles followed by decyanation of nitriles to access diversely substituted olefins is reported. This unprecedented C=C bond-forming methodology takes place in a tandem manner with the formation of formamide as a sole byproduct. The significant advantages of this strategy are the low-cost nickel catalyst, good functional group compatibility (ether, thioether, halo, cyano, ester, amino, N/O/S heterocycles; 43 examples), synthetic convenience, and high reaction selectivity and efficiency.

- Dinuclear cobalt complex-catalyzed stereodivergent semireduction of alkynes: Switchable selectivities controlled by H2O
-
Catalytic semireduction of internal alkynes to alkenes is very important for organic synthesis. Although great success has been achieved in this area, switchable Z/E stereoselectivity based on a single catalyst for the semireduction of internal alkynes is a longstanding challenge due to the multichemo- and stereoselectivity, especially based on less-expensive earth-abundant metals. Herein, we describe a switchable semireduction of alkynes to (Z)- or (E)-alkenes catalyzed by a dinuclear cobalt complex supported by a macrocyclic bis pyridyl diimine (PDI) ligand. It was found that cis-reduction of the alkyne occurs first and the Z-E alkene stereoisomerization process is formally controlled by the amount of H2O, since the concentration of H2O may influence the catalytic activity of the catalyst for isomerization. Therefore, this protocol provides a facile way to switch to either the (Z)- or (E)-olefin isomer in a single transformation by adjusting the amount of water.

- Biogenic synthesis of Pd-nanoparticles using Areca Nut Husk Extract: a greener approach to access α-keto imides and stilbenes
-
An eco-friendly green method for a one-step synthesis of palladium nanoparticles and their synthetic utility are reported. Phytochemicals like amines, alcohols, and phenols present in the Areca Nut Husk extract facilitate the reduction of Pd(ii) to Pd(0). The phytochemicals serve as stabilising agents and ligands for palladium reduction and the need for an external ligand is avoided. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy of newly synthesized palladium nanoparticles revealed a spherical morphology. The catalytic activity of the nanoparticles was tested for 1,2-difunctionalization of ynamides, Heck coupling, denitrogenative coupling of phenylhydrazine and C-H arylation of indole. Moreover, catalyst recyclability, control experiments, mechanistic elucidation, and gram-scale synthesis are elaborated.

A new heterogeneous cobalt catalyst has been synthesized by immobilizing Co species onto a nitrogen-rich porous organic polymer (Co@imine-POP). The heterogeneous catalyst synthesized was efficient in Heck and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions in green media under mild reaction conditions without inert air and phase transfer agents. This phosphine-, copper-, and palladium-free catalyst was stable under the reaction conditions and could be reused for at least eight successive runs without a discernible decrease in its catalytic activity.

- Palladium-Catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck Reaction of Nitroarenes and Styrene Derivatives
-
We have developed a Mizoroki-Heck reaction of nitroarenes with alkenes under palladium catalysis. The use of a Pd/BrettPhos catalyst promoted the alkenylation, whereas other catalysts led to a decrease in the product yield. In addition to nitroarenes, nitroheteroarenes were also applicable to the present reaction. The combination of a nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) with the denitrative alkenylation produced a multifunctionalized arene in a one-pot operation.

- Synthesis of glucoside-based imidazolium salts for Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction in water
-
Sugar-based imidazolium salts (IMSs) represent an outstanding type of material making them eye-catching for a wide variety of applications. Herein, a series of glucoside-based IMSs (Glu-IMSs) combining glucoside and imidazolium head groups with different substituents were synthesized. The catalytic activities of these Glu-IMSs were evaluated by Pd-catalyzed Heck–Mizoroki and Suzuki–Miyaura reactions in water. Among them, the Glu-IMSs contain both –OH and NHCs coordination sites was found to be the most efficient ancillary ligand in comparison with other Glu-IMSs with just single NHCs coordination site. The HR-TEM analysis showed that the palladium nanoparticles stabilized by the Glu-IMSs with an average size of ~4.0 nm was formed in the reaction system, which may be act as an efficient real catalytic species. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a series of novel fluorine-cored organic small molecule functional materials were synthesized with favorable yields.

-
– Tetradentate N,N,N,N-(diphosphinomethyl)amine ligands and their Pd(II) and Ru(II) complexes were synthesized under a nitrogen atmosphere using Schlenk technique. The synthesized ligands and the complexes were characterized with 1H- and 31P-NMR, FT-IR, TG/DTA, and elemental analysis techniques. Pd(II) Complexes were used as catalysts in Heck coupling reactions and Ru(II) complexes were tried in transfer hydrogenation reactions of acetophenone derivatives. According to the results, L4-Pd(II) complex showed the best catalytic activity in the Heck coupling reaction of p-methylbromobenzene with o-chlorostyrene. It was confirmed that the reduction of bromo and chloroacetophenones in all catalysts the conversions were higher. The results showed that Ru(II) complexes as efficient catalysts and up to 99percent conversions was occurred with bromo and chloro acetophenones in K2CO3/isopropyl alcohol media at 80 °C.

- Fe3O4-Lignin@Pd-NPs: A highly efficient, magnetically recoverable and recyclable catalyst for Mizoroki-Heck reaction under solvent-free conditions
-
Palladium nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) were synthesized under green conditions in water by chemical reduction of PdCl2 with NaOH and supported by Fe3O4-Lignin. Fe3O4-Lignin is an organic–inorganic hybrid core-shell was synthesized by sonication of a mixture of Fe3O4-NPs (20 nm) and alkali lignin. The new materials Fe3O4-Lignin and Fe3O4-Lignin@Pd-NPs were characterized by PXRD, SEM and FT-IR spectroscopy. The Fe3O4-Lignin@Pd-NPs was further confirmed by UV–Visible spectroscopy, TEM, EDX, HRICP-AES and TGA/DTA. The average size of Pd-NPs determined from PXRD was 5–10 nm. The amount of palladium loaded on Fe3O4-Lignin obtained from EDX analysis was 26.63percent by mass. The amount of Fe and Pd present in the catalyst obtained from HRICP-AES was 11.88 (wt. percent) and 10.90 (wt. percent) respectively per gram of lignin. The catalytic potential of Fe3O4-Lignin@Pd-NPs was evaluated in Mizoroki-Heck C-C coupling reaction. During the optimization studies of reaction between iodobenzene and n-butyl acrylate in various solvents and under solvent-free but aerobic conditions using various inorganic and organic bases, the product n-butyl 3-phenylprop-2-enoate (1a) obtained was as high as 95percent in highly polar solvents as short as in 10 min and 99percent under solvent-free conditions in 3 min at 140 °C using n-Pr3N as base. The scope of the above catalyst was investigated in the Mizoroki-Heck reaction of various aryl/heterocyclic halides and n-butyl acrylate/styrene under optimized solvent-less conditions. The corresponding products were obtained in high yields (73–99percent). The catalyst recovered by magnetic decantation was reused for five times in the C-C coupling reaction between iodobenzene and n-butyl acrylate which yielded 90–95percent of the desired product, 1a.

- A new PEPPSI type N-heterocyclic carbene palladium(II) complex and its efficiency as a catalyst for Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions in water
-
Abstract: A new air and moisture stable PEPPSI (PEPPSI: pyridine-enhanced pre-catalyst preparation, stabilisation, and initiation) themed palladium N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex [Pd(L)Br2(Py)] (1) [L: 2-flurobenzyl)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H-imidazolline-2-ylidene] was synthesized and characterized. The structure of complex 1 was determined by X-ray single-crystal analysis. The palladium center in 1 adopted a square planar geometry with carbene and pyridine ligands occupying the mutual trans position. The complex 1 was employed to catalyze the Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions of aryl bromides/iodides with styrene in water. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report where a Pd-PEPPSI catalyst was successfully employed in aqueous-phase Mizoroki-Heck reaction. Good to excellent yields of cross-coupling products were obtained with a range of representative aryl bromides/iodides under relatively mild conditions (100 °C, 1 mol% of 1). Graphic abstract: A new palladium PEPPSI complex was synthesized, characterized and evaluated as catalyst for the Mizoroki-Heck reaction in aqueous medium. Both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing aryl halides (bromides and iodides) reacted with styrene to give corresponding coupling products in moderate to excellent yields.[Figure not available: see fulltext.].

- Stereo-controlledanti-hydromagnesiation of aryl alkynes by magnesium hydrides
-
A concise protocol foranti-hydromagnesiation of aryl alkynes was established using 1?:?1 molar combination of sodium hydride (NaH) and magnesium iodide (MgI2) without the aid of any transition metal catalysts. The resulting alkenylmagnesium intermediates could be trapped with a series of electrophiles, thus providing facile accesses to stereochemically well-defined functionalized alkenes. Mechanistic studies by experimental and theoretical approaches imply that polar hydride addition from magnesium hydride (MgH2) is responsible for the process.

- Efficient hydroarylation of terminal alkynes with sodium tetraphenylborate performed in water under mild conditions
-
The hydroarylation of terminal alkynes with sodium tetraphenylborate was performed in high yield within 3 h at room temperature in water, using palladium(II) complexes with imidazole ligands as catalysts. Under these conditions, differently substituted phenylacetylene substrates were converted to arylalkenes and aryl-substituted dienes. High conversion and excellent selectivity were achieved in the hydroarylation of alkynols with sodium tetraphenylborate. Only one product, arylalkene with an OH group, was formed in these reactions with the yield dependent on the kind of alkynol used. A plausible hydroarylation reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of the palladium species identified in the reaction mixture and H/D exchange studies. The contribution of water as the hydride source was evidenced.

- Design, Synthesis, Characterization and Application of BNPs@SiO2(CH2)3NH-CC-AMP-Pd (0) as a New Reusable Nano-Catalyst for Suzuki and Heck Cross-Coupling Reactions
-
Abstract: A simple and effective method was used for the successful preparation of the Boehmite@(CH2)3NH-CC-AMP-Pd (0) NPs as an environmentally friendly heterogeneous nano-catalyst. The synthesized nano-catalyst was well identified by different techniques like FT-IR, XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM, EDX, TGA, mapping, and ICP analysis. The BNPs@SiO2(CH2)3NH-CC-AMP-Pd was used as a recoverable nano-catalyst for Suzuki‐Miyaura and Mizoroki‐Heck coupling reactions under mild, green and sustainable conditions with excellent yields (H2O, EtOH as solvent for Suzuki reaction and solvent-free conditions for Heck reaction). Also, the distribution of palladium on the catalyst surface is uniform and the average palladium size is between 20 and 30?nm. Compared to similar works, this protocol has some of the important aspects such as: thermal and mechanical stability of the catalyst, low palladium leaching (9.7%), the simplicity of the preparation, the availability of raw materials, not expensive, no need for neutral atmosphere, appropriate times, green conditions, use low amount of catalyst (1.42?mol%) and reused catalyst for several consecutive times (at least seven times). - Ultra-small and highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles inside the pores of ZIF-8: Sustainable approach to waste-minimized Mizoroki–Heck cross-coupling reaction based on reusable heterogeneous catalyst
-
The rapid development of nanomaterials, particularly advanced hybrid nanoparticles, has made new opportunities for the design and fabrication of high-performance metal-based catalysts. However, generating metal nanoparticles of desired size without aggregation is an important challenge for enhancing the catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles supported in the host matrix. In this work, a hybrid nanoporous material, namely Pd nanoparticles@N-heterocyclic carbene@ZIF-8, with a high internal surface area was successfully prepared using a dispersed anionic sulfonated N-heterocyclic carbene–Pd(II) precursor inside the cavities of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) using an impregnation approach followed by reduction with NaBH4. The anionic sulfonated N-heterocyclic carbene was found to be a superb ligand for the stabilization of Pd nanoparticles in the pores of ZIF-8. The resulting system was applied to the Mizoroki–Heck cross-coupling reaction, in which the catalyst showed high catalytic activity under mild reaction conditions.

- Homoleptic cis- and trans-palladium(II) bis(guanidinato) complexes derived from N-aryl-N′,N″-di(pyridin-2-yl)- and N-aryl-N′,N″-bis(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)guanidines: Catalysts for Heck-Mizoroki coupling reactions
-
N-Aryl-N′,N″-di(pyridin-2-yl)- and N-aryl-N′,N″-bis(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)guanidines (1–4 and 5–7) were isolated in 75%–81% yields. Reactions of Pd(OAc)2 with guanidines 2–7 carried out separately in toluene at 60 °C for 3 h afforded 8–13 respectively in 69%–80% yields. Compounds 1–13 were characterized by elemental analyses, HR-MS, IR and NMR (1H and 13C) spectroscopy. Molecular structures of guanidines 1, 4, 5 and 6 and those of 8–13 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Pd(II) atom in 8–10 revealed trans geometry while that in 11–13 revealed cis geometry. DFT calculations were carried out on model compounds 9a (trans) and its hypothetical cis isomer, 9b and 12a (cis) and its hypothetical trans isomer 12b which indicated a very small energy difference between the 9a/9b pair (1.28 kcal/mol) whereas a large energy difference was observed between the 12a/12b pair (26.38 kcal/mol) in CH2Cl2. The catalytic utility of 9 in Heck-Mizoroki coupling reactions involving styrene and methyl acrylate and aryl bromides/aryl chlorides in the presence of NaOAc and excess of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) at 120 °C was explored. Both activated and de-activated aryl bromides and aryl chlorides were coupled with styrene and in addition, the aryl chlorides were coupled with methyl acrylate in the presence of 9 to afford the respective coupling products in 68% ? >99% yields. Neat reaction carried out with 9 and TBAB under the optimized condition released the colloidal Pd black as verified by EDAX, PXRD and SEM techniques thereby implying the heterogeneous nature of catalysis.

- Mizoroki-Heck Cross-Coupling of Bromobenzenes with Styrenes: Another Example of Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling with Potential Safety Hazards
-
The potential safety hazards associated with the Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling of bromobenzenes with styrenes were evaluated. The heat output from the reaction in various solvents was comparable in a variety of solvents; however, the rate of reaction was significantly faster in the presence of water. Thermal stability evaluation of the postreaction mixtures in DMSO and 3:1 DMSO/water by differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the onset temperatures of thermal decomposition were significantly lower than that of neat DMSO. Evaluation of the substrate scope revealed that the substitution pattern on the bromobenzene did not affect the heat output. The reaction rate of electron-deficient bromobenzenes was slower than that of the electron-rich bromobenzenes. In general, substituted styrenes afforded similar magnitudes of exotherms; however, the reaction rate of bromobenzene with 2-methylstyrene was significantly slower than the other studied styrenes. The predicted heat of reaction using the density functional theory method, B3LYP, was in good agreement with the experimental data. Such excellent agreement suggests that this calculation method can be used as a preliminary tool to predict heat of reaction and avoid exothermic reaction conditions. In many of the studied cases, the maximum temperature of a synthesis reaction was considerably higher than the solvent boiling point and thermal decomposition onset temperatures when the reaction was performed in DMSO or 3:1 DMSO/water. It is crucial to understand the thermal stability of the reaction mixture to design the process accordingly and ensure the reaction temperature is maintained below the onset temperature of decomposition to avoid potential runaway reactions.

- Palladium nanoparticles immobilized on EDTA-modified Fe3O4@SiO2: a highly stable and efficient magnetically recoverable catalyst for the Heck–Mizoroki coupling reactions
-
Palladium nanoparticles supported on EDTA-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 NPs as an efficient and magnetically reusable nanocatalyst was applied for the Heck cross-coupling reactions. The catalyst was very effective for the Heck reaction of aryl halides (iodides, bromides, and chlorides) with alkenes and conversion was excellent in most cases with higher TOF (turn over frequency). Moreover, the catalyst could be recycled for eight runs without any significant loss of catalytic activity, showing its superiority over homogeneous catalysts for industrial and chemical applications. Also, the leaching of the catalyst has been examined by a hot filtration test and ICP analysis.

- Cobalt catalyzed stereodivergent semi-hydrogenation of alkynes using H2O as the hydrogen source
-
Cobalt-catalyzed stereodivergent semi-hydrogenation of internal alkynes to alkenes is developed. The reaction proceeded through transfer hydrogenation under mild conditions using a base metal CoI2 as the catalyst, and H2O/MeOH as the hydrogen source with Zn as the reductant. The E/Z-selectivity of the product could be switched by changing the solvent and by inclusion/exclusion of a bidentate phosphine ligand (dppe). This method provides a simple and cost effective pathway for the synthesis of 1,2-dideuterioalkenes.

- Base-Controlled Heck, Suzuki, and Sonogashira Reactions Catalyzed by Ligand-Free Platinum or Palladium Single Atom and Sub-Nanometer Clusters
-
The assumption that oxidative addition is the key step during the cross-coupling reaction of aryl halides has led to the development of a plethora of increasingly complex metal catalysts, thereby obviating in many cases the exact influence of the base, which is a simple, inexpensive, and necessary reagent for this paramount transformation. Here, a combined experimental and computational study shows that the oxidative addition is not the single kinetically relevant step in different cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by sub-nanometer Pt or Pd species, since the reactivity control is shifted toward subtle changes in the base. The exposed metal atoms in the cluster cooperate to enable an extremely easy oxidative addition of the aryl halide, even chlorides, and allow the base to bifurcate the coupling. With sub-nanometer Pd species, amines drive to the Heck reaction, carbonate drives to the Sonogahira reaction, and phosphate drives to the Suzuki reaction, while for Pt clusters and single atoms, good conversion is only achieved using acetate as a base. This base-controlled orthogonal reactivity with ligand-free catalysts opens new avenues in the design of cross-coupling reactions in organic synthesis.

- Palladium-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck reactions in water using thermoresponsive polymer micelles
-
Palladium-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck reactions were carried out in water using thermoresponsive polymer micelles. The micelles were generated from thermoresponsive block copolymers consisting of a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) segment and a hydrophilic segment such as nonionic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (2) and anionic poly(sodium p-styrenesulfonate) (PSSNa) (9). These copolymers exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior at ca. 40–50 °C and showed thermal stimuli-induced formation and dissociation of micelles. The copolymers formed micelles in aqueous solution at higher temperature, where catalytic reactions proceeded. At lower temperature, the micelles dissociated to form a clear solution, enabling efficient extraction of the products from aqueous reaction mixture. In the presence of these copolymers, palladium complexes catalyzed the coupling reactions between aryl iodides and alkene compounds inside the hydrophobic micelle cores in water under relatively milder conditions. Extraction of the products from the aqueous solution of 2 or 9 was found to be efficient enough in comparison with conventional surfactants.

- Palladium-Catalyzed Reductive Coupling Reaction of Terminal Alkynes with Aryl Iodides Utilizing Hafnocene Difluoride as a Hafnium Hydride Precursor Leading to trans-Alkenes
-
Herein, we describe a reductive cross-coupling of alkynes and aryl iodides by using a novel catalytic system composed of a catalytic amount of palladium dichloride and a promoter precursor, hafnocene difluoride (Cp2HfF2, Cp=cyclopentadienyl anion), in the presence of a mild reducing reagent, a hydrosilane, leading to a one-pot preparation of trans-alkenes. In this process, a series of coupling reactions efficiently proceeds through the following three steps: (i) an initial formation of hafnocene hydride from hafnocene difluoride and the hydrosilane, (ii) a subsequent hydrohafnation toward alkynes, and (iii) a final transmetalation of the alkenyl hafnium species to a palladium complex. This reductive coupling could be chemoselectively applied to the preparation of trans-alkenes with various functional groups, such as an alkyl group, a halogen, an ester, a nitro group, a heterocycle, a boronic ester, and an internal alkyne.

- Group 4 Metallocene Difluoride/Palladium Bimetallic Catalysts for the Reductive Cross-Coupling of Alkynes with Aryl Iodides and Bromides
-
A novel protocol has been developed for the selective synthesis of (E)-alkenes via the reductive cross-coupling of alkynes and aryl halides using a bimetallic catalyst system composed of a group 4 metallocene difluoride (Cp2[M]F2; [M] = Hf or Zr; Cp = cyclopentadienide) and palladium dichloride. This reaction proceeds via a coupling between an aryl halide and an in situ generated alkenyl metallocene intermediate derived from the group 4 metallocene difluoride, a hydrosilane, and an alkyne. For a catalytic reductive coupling, the addition of sodium fluoride (NaF) to the reaction system is required. Moreover, in the presence of NaF, a ligand exchange was observed by NMR spectroscopy in hafnocene diiodide (Cp2HfI2) to afford hafnocene difluoride (Cp2HfF2).

A novel metal-free reduction system, in which H2Se (or HSe-) produced in situ from Se/DMF/H2O acts as the active reducing species, has been developed. By using water as an inexpensive, safe, and environmentally friendly surrogate as the hydrogen donor, this new reduction system incorporating Se/DMF/H2O displayed high selectivity and good activity in the reduction of α,β-unsaturated ketones and alkynes. Therefore, this reduction system has great potential to be a general and practical reduction methodology in organic transformation.

- Dehydrative Cross-Coupling of 1-Phenylethanol Catalysed by Palladium Nanoparticles Formed in situ under Acidic Conditions
-
A dehydrative cross-coupling of 1-phenylethanol catalysed by sugar derived, in situ formed palladium(0) nanoparticles under acidic conditions is realised. The acidic conditions allow for use of alcohols as a feedstock in metal-mediated coupling reactions via their in situ dehydration and subsequent cross-coupling. Extensive analysis of the size and morphology of the palladium nanoparticles formed in situ showed that the zero-valent metal was surrounded by hydrophilic hydroxyl groups. EDX-TEM imaging studies using a prototype silicon drift detector provided insight into the problematic role of molecular oxygen in the system. This increased understanding of the catalyst deactivation allowed for the development of the cross-coupling methodology. A 250-12,000 fold increase in molar efficiency was observed when compared to related two-step protocols that use alternative feedstocks for the palladium-mediated synthesis of stilbenes. This work opens up a new research area in which the active catalyst is formed, stabilised and regenerated by a renewable sugar.

- Synthesis of a novel ZnO nanoplates supported hydrazone-based palladacycle as an effective and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for the Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reaction
-
A new hydrazone-based palladacycle complex was successfully prepared onto ZnO nanoplates support and was fully identified by using a variety of methods such as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET), inductively coupled plasma technique (ICP), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The morphology of nanoplates support has been also confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Furthermore, it was shown that ZnO nanoplates supported hydrazone-based palladacycle can act as a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reaction with excellent yields. The reaction was successfully carried out between aryl iodides, bromides or even aryl chlorides with a variety of olefins. Additionally, it is possible to isolate the catalyst from the reaction mixture and reused for eight sequential cycles without remarkable decrease in catalytic activity.

- Oxidative and Reductive Cross-Coupling Reactions Catalyzed by an Anionic "ligandless" Palladium Complex
-
The anionic complex [NBu4][Pd(DMSO)Cl3], which can be synthesized on a gram scale in a single step starting from commercially available starting materials, has been shown to be an active catalyst in the Mizoroki-Heck reaction of aryl halides. We present two new catalytic applications of this complex: the base-free oxidative Heck reaction and the reductive homodimerization of aryl halides. This complex outperformed other palladium salts. In the latter reaction, the catalyst loading could be reduced to 0.01 mol %. The scope of the reactions has been explored, demonstrating the potential of the anionic palladium complex in these catalytic transformations.

- Thermo-responsive poly(N -isopropylacrylamide)- block -poly(ionic liquid) of pyridinium sulfonate immobilized Pd nanoparticles in C-C coupling reactions
-
A thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-block-poly(ionic liquid) (PNIPAM-b-PIL) of pyridinium-type was prepared. Initially, controlled synthesis of PNIPAM was performed via RAFT method. Subsequently, PNIPAM as macromolecular chain transfer agent (macro-CTA) was used for fabrication of PNIPAM-b-PIL through reaction with a synthesized IL monomer i.e. 4-vinyl pyridinium propane sulfonate. The Pd catalyst was produced throughout palladium nanoparticles' anchoring into this block copolymer. The catalyst was characterized using ICP, FT-IR, NMR, UV-Vis, TGA, XRD, SEM and EDX techniques. The catalyst's TEM image proved nearly fine dispersion of PdNPs with negligible agglomeration. The catalyst was used in the production of a variety of substituted alkenes and biaryl compounds (Heck and Suzuki coupling) in organic and aqueous media and under solvent free conditions. Additionally, the results signified extreme reusability of the catalyst with a simple recycling procedure.

- Stereocontrolled synthesis of (E)-stilbene derivatives by palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction
-
A general procedure for the stereocontrolled synthesis of (E)-stilbene derivatives by palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of (E)-2-phenylethenylboronic acid pinacol ester with aryl bromides was investigated. (E)-2-Phenylethenylboronic acid pinacol ester was prepared by 9-BBN-catalyzed hydroboration of phenylacetylene with pinacolborane. This reagent undergoes facile palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling with a diverse set of aryl bromides to provide the corresponding (E)-stilbene derivatives in moderate to good yield. The use of the sterically bulky t-Bu3PHBF4 ligand was crucial to the successful coupling of electron-rich and electron-poor aryl bromides. Complete stereochemical retention of the (E)-2-phenylethenylboronic acid pinacol ester alkene geometry was observed in all of the (E)-stilbene derivatives synthesized.

- Synthesis of 1,2-diarylethylenes by Pd-catalyzed one-pot reaction of benzyl halides, tosylhydrazide, and aryl aldehydes
-
Background: Substituted olefins are versatile functional groups and intermediates in chemistry, medicine, electronics, and optics and materials science fields because of their unique properties. One important class of substituted olefins 1,2-diarylethylenes have attracted considerable attention due to their presence in both natural products and pharmacologically active substances. Methods: In this paper, we developed a one-pot two-step coupling reaction of aryl aldehydes, tosylhydrazide with benzyl halides by using inexpensive Pd(PPh3)4 as catalyst, leading to a variety of 1,2- diphenylethenes derivatives with moderate to good yields. Results: The desired 1,2-diarylethylenes were obtained in 46-96% yields via Pd(0)-catalyzed one-pot reaction of benzyl halides, tosylhydrazide, and aryl aldehydes. Conclusion: The catalytic system presented here enables the use of easily accessible starting materials and good functional group tolerance.

- Synthesis of Highly Substituted Arenes via Cyclohexadiene-Alkene C-H Cross Coupling and Aromatization
-
The development of a cross-coupling method for the regioselective β-alkenylation of 2,5-cyclohexadiene carboxylic acid derivatives to form ortho-alkenylarenes through in situ decarboxylation and aromatization is described. The carboxylic acid functionality is used as a traceless directing group for efficient and mild β-alkenylation. The modular sequence comprises a reductive Birch α-alkylation, ionic ?-alkylation followed by a Pd-catalyzed decarboxylative β-alkenylation with subsequent aromatization resulting in an overall three-fold ipso-para-ortho functionalization of readily accessed benzoic acid derivatives. Efficient synthesis of various alkyl-alkenylarenes under mild conditions in moderate to excellent yields is presented.

- Pd/Cu-free Heck and Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction by Co nanoparticles immobilized on magnetic chitosan as reusable catalyst
-
Chitosan (CS) is a porous, self-standing, nanofibrillar microsphere that can be used as a metal carrier. Amino groups on CS enable to modulate cobalt coordination using a safe organic ligand (methyl salicylate). This catalyst efficiently promotes Heck cross-coupling of a large library of functional substrates under mild and sustainable conditions (polyethylene glycol as solvent at 80 °C in a short time (1 h)). The cobalt complex was also used as a heterogeneous, efficient, inexpensive, and green catalyst for Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions. The reactions of various aryl halides and phenylacetylene provided the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. More importantly, this phosphine, copper, and palladium-free catalyst was stable under the reaction conditions and could be easily reused using an external magnet for at least five successive runs without a discernible decrease in its catalytic activity.

Abstract: This study describes an investigation on Suzuki and Heck cross-couplings of aryl electrophiles in the presence of heterogeneous Pd nanoparticles supported on amino-vinyl silica functionalized magnetic carbon nanotube. The core–shell contains CNT@Fe3O4@SiO2-Pd in which the functionalized SiO2 helps the stabilization of Pd nanoparticles and also responsible for the reduction of Pd(II) to Pd(0) without the need for adding external reducing agents. All of the reactions were done under phosphine-free condition. Graphical Abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.]
