- Preparation, characterization, and crystal structures of tetraiodoferrates(III)
-
The extremely air and moisture sensitive tetraiodoferrates MFeI4 with M = K, Rb and Cs have been synthesized by reaction of Fe , MI and I2 at 300°C in closed quartz ampoules. The essentially more stable alkylammonium tetraiodoferrates NR4FeI4 with R = H, C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9 and n-C5H11 can be obtained by reaction of Fe, NR4I and I2 in nitromethane. The Raman and UV/Vis-spectra of the black compounds show the existence of tetrahedral [FeI4]- ions in the structures. The crystal structure of the monoclinic CsFeI4 (CsTlI4 type, spgr P21/c; a = 7.281(1) A; b = 17.960(3) A; C = 8.248(2) A; β = 107.35(15)°) is built up by tetrahedral [FeI4]- ions and CsI11 polyhedra. The crystal structure of the orthorhombic (n-C5H11)4NFeI4 (spgr Pnna; a = 20.143(4) A; b = 12.683(3) A; c = 12.577(3) A) contains tetrahedral [(n-C5H11)4N]+ ions and [FeI4]- ions, respectively. - About the synthesis of the prismane [NEt4]2[Fe6S6I6]
-
In the literature there are conflicting views as to whether the iron-sulfur prismane [NEt4]2[Fe6S6I6] can be prepared in a one-pot synthesis from iron, sulfur, iodine and tetraethylammonium iodide. The cluster can be prepared in this way, provided the work-up conditions are rigorously controlled. The spectroscopic properties of [NEt4]2[Fe6S6I6] prepared in a one-pot synthesis are compared with those of a sample prepared by the oxidative transformation of [NEt4]2[Fe4S4I4] and to those of other iodo-iron-sulfur clusters.

- The Redox System Iron/Iodine: Investigations in Acetonitrile and Tetrahydrofuran. A Novel Synthesis of Tetraiodoferrate(III)
-
The oxidation of iron by iodine in acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran solution leads to specific redox equilibria. In dependence of the molar ratios of Fe and I2 the following compounds are isolated: Fe(CH3CN)6FeI4, Fe(CH3CN)6(I3)2, Fe(C4H8O)62.When Et4NI is added to a tetrahydrofuran solution of FeI2 and I2, Et4NFeI4 can be obtained.Evidence is presented for the stability of Et4NFeI4 to autoreduction.A resonance Raman spectrum has been obtained for Et4NFeI4.Crystal data for the different compounds are reported. - Keywords: Iron/Iodine Redox System, Tetraiodoferrate(III), Preparation, Resonance Raman Spectrum, Crystal Data
