- Electrochemical Proton Reduction over Nickel Foam for Z-Stereoselective Semihydrogenation/deuteration of Functionalized Alkynes
-
Selective reduction strategies based on abundant-metal catalysts are very important in the production of chemicals. In this paper, a method for the electrochemical semihydrogenation and semideuteration of alkynes to form Z-alkenes was developed, using a simple nickel foam as catalyst and H3O+ or D3O+ as sources of hydrogen or deuterium. Good yields and excellent stereoselectivities (Z/E up to 20 : 1) were obtained under very mild reaction conditions. The reaction proceeded with terminal and nonterminal alkynes, and also with alkynes containing easily reducible functional groups, such as carbonyl groups, as well as aryl chlorides, bromides, and even iodides. The nickel-foam electrocatalyst could be recycled up to 14 times without any change in its catalytic properties.

- Palladium Complexes with Phenoxy- And Amidate-Functionalized N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands Based on 3-Phenylimidazo[1,5- a]pyridine: Synthesis and Catalytic Application in Mizoroki-Heck Coupling Reactions with Ortho-Substituted Aryl Chlorides
-
Mononuclear and tetranuclear palladium complexes with functionalized "abnormal"N-heterocyclic carbene (aNHC) ligands based on 3-phenylimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine were synthesized. All of the new complexes were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The new complexes were applied in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction of aryl chlorides with alkenes in neat n-tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB). The mononuclear palladium complex with a tridentate phenoxy- and amidate-functionalized aNHC ligand displayed activity superior to that of the palladium complex with a bidentate amidate-functionalized aNHC ligand. The new tetranuclear complex with the tridentate ligand displayed the best activities, capable of the activation of deactivated aryl chlorides as substrates with a low Pd atom loading. Even challenging sterically demanding ortho-substituted aryl chlorides were successfully utilized as substrates. The studies revealed that the robustness of the catalyst precursor is crucial in delivering high catalytic activities. Also, the promising use of tetranuclear palladium complexes with functionalized aNHC ligands as the catalyst precursors in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction in neat TBAB was demonstrated.

- Valorisation of urban waste to access low-cost heterogeneous palladium catalysts for cross-coupling reactions in biomass-derived γ-valerolactone
-
Herein we report a simple protocol for the valorisation of a common urban biowaste. The lignocellulosic biomass obtained after the pre-treatment of pine needle urban waste is efficiently transformed into a low-cost support (PiNe) for the immobilization of Pd nanoparticles. The final Pd/PiNe heterogeneous catalyst features a small particle size (4.5 nm) and a metal loading (9.9 wt%) comparable with most commercially available and generally used counterparts. In this contribution, we tested the catalytic efficiency of the Pd/PiNe system in two representative cross-couplings, Heck and Hiyama reactions, and compared the results obtained with commercial Pd/C catalyst. The good reactivity in the biomass-derived solvent (GVL) confirms that the Pd/PiNe heterogeneous catalyst is a valid system that can be integrated into a waste valorization chain within a circular economy approach. In addition, the efficiency of the catalyst has also been extended to perform the challenging consecutive Hiyama-Heck reaction to afford differently substituted (E)-1,2-diarylethenes.

- Pd supported on clicked cellulose-modified magnetite-graphene oxide nanocomposite for C-C coupling reactions in deep eutectic solvent
-
Cellulose-modified magnetite-graphene oxide nanocomposite was prepared via click reaction and utilized for immobilization of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles without using additional reducing agent. The abundant OH groups of cellulose provided the uniform dispersion and high stability of Pd nanoparticles, while magnetite-graphene oxide as a supporting material offered high specific surface area and easy magnetic separation. The as-prepared nanocomposite served as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck and Sonogashira coupling reactions in various hydrophilic and hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as sustainable and environmentally benign reaction media. Among the fifteen DESs evaluated for coupling reactions, the hydrophilic DES composed of dimethyl ammonium chloride and glycerol exhibited the best results. Due to the low miscibility of catalyst and DES in organic solvents, the separated aqueous phase containing both of the catalyst and DES can be readily recovered by evaporating water and retrieved eight times with negligible loss of catalytic performance.

- Palladium Nanoparticles Anchored on Magnesium Organosilicate: An Effective and Selective Catalyst for the Heck Reaction
-
A new and effective palladium catalyst supported on a magnesium organosilicate for application in the Heck reaction is presented. A group of compounds comprising 22 examples were synthesized in moderate to high yields (up to 99%) within a short time. The palladium supported on magnesium organosilicate catalyst was characterized as an amorphous solid by SEM, containing around 33% of palladium inside the solid, and even with this low quantity of palladium, the catalyst was very efficient in the Heck reaction. Besides, based on the Scherrer equation, the crystallite size of the synthesized palladium nanoparticles was ultrasmall (around 1.3 nm). This strategy is a simple and efficient route for the formation of C-C bonds via the Heck cross-coupling reaction.

- Palladium Loaded Dendronized Polymer as Efficient Polymeric Sustainable Catalyst for Heck Coupling Reaction
-
The palladium incorporated amine-functionalized dendronized polymer was synthesized by the addition of palladium acetate to dendronized polymer in methanol at room temperature. Palladium species are immobilized onto the dendritic structure by their coordination with amino functional groups. The newly developed dendritic system showed high palladium content in the low generation level itself, which was found to be 4.19?mmol/g. This was fairly higher than, the other palladium-based catalysts. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–Visible spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to confirm the successful synthesis of the new catalyst. It was used as a homogeneous palladium catalyst for Heck coupling reaction between olefins and differently substituted aryl halides and the products were isolated in high yield. The products isolated were in trans configuration, which indicated the selectivity of the newly developed catalytic system. Also, this catalyst system was reused up to nine times without a significant decrease in its catalytic activity. The easy accessibility of catalytic sites, stability, resistance to metal leaching, high catalytic activity and remarkable stereoselectivity with a low amount of catalyst are all due to the dendritic support. The docking study was carried out for all the stilbene derivatives obtained by the Heck coupling reaction against DprE1 protein to study its potential antitubercular activity. All the compounds displayed superior docking score values over the range ??6.5 to ??8.2?kcal/mol, compared to the standard drug isoniazid with docking score of ??6.1?kcal/mol against DprE1. - Green and sustainable palladium nanomagnetic catalyst stabilized by glucosamine-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles for Suzuki and Heck reactions
-
A novel magnetic and heterogeneous palladium-based catalyst stabilized by glucosamine-functionalized magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticle was synthesized. The strategy relies on the covalently bonding of glucosamine to cyanuric chloride-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles followed by complexation with palladium. The structure of magnetic nanocatalyst was fully determined by FT-IR, XRD, DLS, FE-SEM, TEM, ICP, UV-Vis, TGA, VSM, and EDX. The obtained results confirmed that the palladium nanoparticles stabilized by glucosamine immobilized onto the magnetic support exhibited high activity in cross-coupling reactions of Suzuki-Miyaura and Mizoroki-Heck. Various aryl halides were coupled with arylboronic acid (Suzuki cross-coupling reaction) and olefins (Heck reactions) under the green conditions to provide corresponding products in high to excellent yields. Interestingly, the catalyst can be easily isolated from the reaction media by magnetic decantation and can subsequently be applied for consecutive reaction cycles (at least seven times) with no notable reduction in the catalytic activity.

- Pd salen complex@CPGO as a convenient, effective heterogeneous catalyst for Suzuki–Miyaura and Heck–Mizoroki cross-coupling reactions
-
A Pd(II) Schiff base complex supported on graphene oxide nanosheets (Pd(II) salen@CPGO) has been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, ICP-AES, XRD, SEM/EDX and TEM. The synthesized nanocatalyst has been found to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for Suzuki–Miyaura and Heck–Mizoroki coupling reactions. Pd(II) salen@CPGO could be separated and recovered easily from the reaction mixture and recycled several times without a discernible decrease in its catalytic activity. The construction of a solid sheet-supported Pd catalyst would be expected to be a promising system to perform heterogeneous catalytic reactions.

- Structural Effect of Pincer Pd(II)–ONO Complexes Modified with Acylthiourea on Sizes of the In Situ Generated Pd Nanoparticles During Heck Coupling Reaction
-
Abstract: The Pd nanoparticles generated in situ from Pd–pincer complexes catalyzed Heck coupling reaction. For this purpose, new Pd(II)–ONO pincer complexes (1–4) containing acylthiourea ancillary ligand were obtained by treating [Pd(ONO)(CH3CN)] with the respective N-substituted carbamothioyl benzamide ligand (L1–L4). Formation of these complexes was confirmed by UV–Visible, FT-IR, NMR and mass spectroscopic techniques. The sizes of in situ formed Pd nanoparticles were greatly affected by the substituent in ancillary ligand, which in turn influenced their catalytic activity towards Heck coupling reaction. The in situ formed Pd nanoparticles during Heck reaction were removed from the reaction medium and analyzed using HR-TEM to estimate the sizes of the Pd nanoparticles. Complex [Pd(ONO)((N-benzylcarbamothioyl)benzamide)] (1) which does not possess any substituent on the benzyl moiety of acylthiourea produced the smallest Pd nanoparticles with the average particle size of 3.7?nm. Hence, complex 1 showed the utmost catalytic activity. With complex 1, 51–99% of conversion was observed during Heck coupling reaction of styrene with various aryl halides. XPS results confirmed that the recovered black particles were Pd(0). A reasonable recyclability results were achieved by these in situ generated Pd nanoparticles. - A Solid-Phase Assisted Flow Approach to In Situ Wittig-Type Olefination Coupling
-
Described herein is the development of a continuous flow, solid-phase triphenylphosphine (PS-PPh3) assisted protocol to facilitate the in situ coupling of reciprocal pairs of halogen and carbonyl functionalised molecular pairs by a Wittig olefination within 15 mins. The protocol entails injecting a single solution (1 : 1 CHCl3 : EtOH) containing the halogenated and carbonyl-based substrates into a continuously flowing stream of CHCl3 : EtOH (1 : 1), passed through a fixed bed of K2CO3 and PS-PPh3. With advancement to the previous PS-PPh3 coupling procedures, the method employs a traditional polystyrene-based immobilisation matrix, the substrate scope of the protocol extended to substituted ketones, secondary alkyl chlorides, and an unprotected maleimide scaffold.

- PVC-NHC-Pd(0): An efficient and reusable heterogeneous catalyst for highly cis-selective semihydrogenation of alkynes using formic acid as hydrogen source
-
PVC-NHC-Pd(0) catalyst was prepared and exerted to highly cis-selective semihydrogenation of diarylacetylene using formic acid as hydrogen source under mild condition. The as-prepared catalyst was well characterized by various techniques such as FT-IR, 1H NMR, XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS, and TGA. The catalyst can be easily recovered and recycled without loss of its activity and selectivity owing to the metal-ligand interaction between Pd(0) with polymeric NHC ligands. This protocol is an attractive alternative of the classical Lindlar's hydrogenation.

- Copper(0) nanoparticle catalyzed Z-Selective Transfer Semihydrogenation of Internal Alkynes
-
The use of copper(0) nanoparticles in the transfer semihydrogenation of alkynes has been investigated as a lead-free alternative to Lindlar catalysts. A stereo-selective methodology for the hydrogenation of internal alkynes to the corresponding (Z)-alkenes in high isolated yields (86% average) has been developed. This green and sustainable transfer hydrogenation protocol relies on non-noble copper nanoparticles for reduction of both electron-rich and electron-deficient, aliphatic-substituted and aromatic- substituted internal alkynes. Polyols, such as ethylene glycol and glycerol, have been proven to act as hydrogen sources, and excellent stereo- and chemoselectivity have been observed. Enabling technologies, such as microwave and ultrasound irradiation are shown to enhance heat and mass transfer, whether used alone or in combination, resulting in a decrease in reaction time from hours to minutes. - Synthesis, crystal structure, and catalytic activity of bridged-bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) palladium(II) complexes in selective Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions
-
A series of three 1,3-propanediyl bridged bis(N-heterocyclic carbene)palladium(II) complexes (Pd-BNH1, Pd-BNH2, and Pd-BNH3), with + I effect order of the N-substituents of the ligand (isopropyl > benzyl > methoxyphenyl), was the subject of a spectroscopic, structural, computational and catalytic investigation. The bis(NHC)PdBr2 complexes were evaluated in Mizoroki-Heck coupling reactions of aryl bromides with styrene or acrylate derivatives and showed high catalytic efficiency to produce diarylethenes and cinnamic acid derivatives. The X-ray structure of the most active palladium complex Pd-BNH3 shows that the Pd(II) center is bonded to the two carbon atoms of the bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) and two bromide ligands in cis position, resulting in a distorted square planar geometry. The NMR data of Pd-BNH3 are consistent with a single chair-boat rigid conformer in solution with no dynamic behavior of the 8-membered ring palladacycle in the temperature range 25–120 °C. The catalytic activities of three Pd-bridged bis(NHC) complexes in the Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions were not found to have a direct correlation with +I effect order of the N-substituents of the ligand. However, a direct correlation was found between the DFT calculated absolute softness of the three complexes with their respective catalytic activity. The highest calculated softness, in the case of Pd-BNH3, is expected to favor the coordination steps of both the soft aryl bromides and alkenes in the Heck catalytic cycle.

Two bis-imidazolium salts LH2·Cl2 and LH2·(PF6)2 with acylated piperazine linker and two N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) silver(I) and palladium(II) complexes [L2Ag2](PF6)2 (1) and [L2Pd2Cl4] (2) were prepared. The crystal structures of LH2·Cl2 and 1 were confirmed by X-ray analysis. In 1, one 26-membered macrometallocycle was generated through two silver(I) ions and two bidentate ligands L. The catalytic activity of 2 was investigated in Sonogashira, Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. The results displayed that these C—C coupling reactions can be smoothly carried out under the catalysis of 2.

- Coordination from Heteroscorpionate Ligand Towards Pd(II) via Pd???Hδ?C(sp3) Interaction: Structural and Catalytic Studies
-
The coordination ability of the heteroscorpionate ligand 2,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-1-p-tolylethanol (1) towards palladium (II) dihalides was evaluated. The structures of the respective palladium complexes (2 and 3) were elucidated in solution by NMR spectroscopy, and their molecular structures were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Both studies revealed the existence of Pd???Hδ?C(sp3) anagostic interactions. The molecular structure of complexes 2 and 3 displays coordination of ligand 1 to palladium in a κ3-NNH tridentate fashion via two nitrogen atoms and one δ-anagostic H???Pd interaction. The metal center exhibits a square pyramidal geometry. The distances of anagostic Hδ???Pd interactions ranged from 2.566 to 2.576 ?. The δ-anagostic H???Pd interactions in complexes 2 and 3 were also identified by Bader's quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and non-covalent interaction (NCI) analysis. The catalytic efficiencies of complexes 2 and 3 in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions were evaluated and the results showed that palladium (II) dibromide complex is the most efficient of the series. Complex 3 was also evaluated in Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions.

- Multidentate N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes of Nickel and Palladium: Structural Analysis and Catalytic Application in Mizoroki–Heck Coupling Reaction
-
Two series of electron-rich metal (Ni and Pd) complexes, namely a pyridine-coordinated tridentate NHC/amidate/phenoxy metal complex and a tetradentate complex bearing an extra pyridyl group, were synthesized. Two carbene moieties, imidazole-based and benzimidazole-based NHCs, were also incorporated into the ligand backbones. Seven of the new complexes were structurally characterized and comparative structural analysis revealed that the tetradentate complex with a flanking pyridyl side-arm was less distorted, leading to chelation-assisted stronger NHC coordination and hence a shorter metal–carbene bond. The catalytic activities of the two sets of palladium complexes for the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction were investigated. The comparative data showed that despite the higher thermal stability and the presence of the flanking hemilabile pyridyl side-arm which provided unsaturation to the metal center, the catalytic performance was slightly inferior to that of the tridentate palladium complex with a “throw-away” pyridine ligand. The tridentate palladium complex with the benzimidazole-based NHC moiety was the most effective catalyst, allowing the utilization of a range of aryl chlorides including deactivated substrates with a low 0.2 mol-% Pd loading in molten n-tetrabutylammonium bromide.

- Synthesis of glucoside-based imidazolium salts for Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction in water
-
Sugar-based imidazolium salts (IMSs) represent an outstanding type of material making them eye-catching for a wide variety of applications. Herein, a series of glucoside-based IMSs (Glu-IMSs) combining glucoside and imidazolium head groups with different substituents were synthesized. The catalytic activities of these Glu-IMSs were evaluated by Pd-catalyzed Heck–Mizoroki and Suzuki–Miyaura reactions in water. Among them, the Glu-IMSs contain both –OH and NHCs coordination sites was found to be the most efficient ancillary ligand in comparison with other Glu-IMSs with just single NHCs coordination site. The HR-TEM analysis showed that the palladium nanoparticles stabilized by the Glu-IMSs with an average size of ~4.0 nm was formed in the reaction system, which may be act as an efficient real catalytic species. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a series of novel fluorine-cored organic small molecule functional materials were synthesized with favorable yields.

- Catalytic activity of Pd dithiolate complexes with large-bite-angle diphosphines in Heck coupling reactions
-
Palladium(II) complexes of aryl dithiolates and wide-bite-angle diphosphines Xantphos and dppf have been developed as efficient catalysts in Suzuki and Suzuki carbonylation reactions. The catalytic activity of these highly stable, discrete and charged complexes was investigated in Heck coupling reactions of styrene and a variety of aryl bromides. Under optimized reaction conditions these palladium complexes showed excellent activity with high turnover number (6 × 106) and high turnover frequency (4 × 105 h?1). The effect of bite angle of diphosphines on the catalytic activity of the complexes [Pd2(P∩P)2(SC12H8S)]2(OTf)4 followed the trend P∩P = Xantphos > dppf > dppe as the order of their bite angles. The catalyst could be reused, and after three cycles the formation of significant amount of Pd nanoparticles was noticed, which were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The high catalytic activity has been attributed to the Pd nanoparticles.

- Immobilized Pd on Eggshell Membrane: A powerful and recyclable catalyst for Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions in water
-
A stable heterogeneous palladium catalysts, the waste eggshell membrane (ESM) anchored Pd complex, was synthesized by a simple and green technique. The catalyst obtained can display an outstanding catalytic activity for Suzuki and Heck coupling reactions in water media. The reactions of various aryl halides with aryl boronic acids and terminal alkenes provided the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields. More importantly, this novel and efficient catalyst with high stability can be easily reused for at least twelve times with no decrease of the catalytic activity, performing an endurable and wide tolerance of the substrates. Facile synthesis, high catalytic activity, and recyclability make these catalysts interesting for further studies.

- A new PEPPSI type N-heterocyclic carbene palladium(II) complex and its efficiency as a catalyst for Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions in water
-
Abstract: A new air and moisture stable PEPPSI (PEPPSI: pyridine-enhanced pre-catalyst preparation, stabilisation, and initiation) themed palladium N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex [Pd(L)Br2(Py)] (1) [L: 2-flurobenzyl)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H-imidazolline-2-ylidene] was synthesized and characterized. The structure of complex 1 was determined by X-ray single-crystal analysis. The palladium center in 1 adopted a square planar geometry with carbene and pyridine ligands occupying the mutual trans position. The complex 1 was employed to catalyze the Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions of aryl bromides/iodides with styrene in water. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report where a Pd-PEPPSI catalyst was successfully employed in aqueous-phase Mizoroki-Heck reaction. Good to excellent yields of cross-coupling products were obtained with a range of representative aryl bromides/iodides under relatively mild conditions (100 °C, 1 mol% of 1). Graphic abstract: A new palladium PEPPSI complex was synthesized, characterized and evaluated as catalyst for the Mizoroki-Heck reaction in aqueous medium. Both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing aryl halides (bromides and iodides) reacted with styrene to give corresponding coupling products in moderate to excellent yields.[Figure not available: see fulltext.].

- Catalytic and antibacterial properties of 3-dentate carboxamide Pd/Pt complexes obtained via a benign route
-
The complexes PdII(qcq)(OAc) and PtII(qcq)Cl have been synthesized using environmentally benign synthesized ligands and characterized by elemental analyses: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The catalytic activity of the complex was assessed, in different media, for the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction for typical aryl halides and terminal olefins under aerobic conditions. Since the base and the solvent were found to influence the efficiency of the reaction, reaction conditions, temperature, time, and the amount of K3PO4 and a mixture of H2O/PEG, were optimized. We found, for the Mizoroki–Heck reaction coupling less reactive aryl chloride derivatives with olefins, promising activity for palladium catalysts. The electrochemical behavior of Hqcq and the Pd(II) complex was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and irreversible PdII/I reductions were observed. Hqcq and the Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes were also screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity. They showed promising antibacterial activity comparable to that of the antibiotic penicillin.

- An Annelated Mesoionic Carbene (MIC) Based Ru(II) Catalyst for Chemo- And Stereoselective Semihydrogenation of Internal and Terminal Alkynes
-
The catalytic utility of [RuL1(CO)2I2] (1), containing an annelated π-conjugated imidazo-naphthyridine-based mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligand (L1), is evaluated for E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation. The precatalyst 1, in combination with 2 equiv of AgBArF, semihydrogenates a broad range of internal alkynes with molecular hydrogen (5 bar) in water. (E)-Alkenes are accessed in high yields, and a number of reducible functional groups are tolerated. A chelate MIC ligand and two cis carbonyls provide a well-defined platform at the Ru center for hydrogenation and isomerization. The loss of two iodides and the presence of two carbonyls render the Ru center electron deficient and thus the formation of metal vinylidenes with terminal alkynes is avoided. This is leveraged for the semihydrogenation of terminal alkynes by the same catalytic system in isopropyl alcohol. Reaction profile, isomerization, kinetic, and DFT studies reveal initial alkyne hydrogenation to a (Z)-alkene, which further isomerizes to an (E)-alkene via metal-catalyzed Z → E isomerization.

- A Simple Nickel Catalyst Enabling an E-Selective Alkyne Semihydrogenation
-
Stereoselective alkyne semihydrogenations are attractive approaches to alkenes, which are key building blocks for synthesis. With regards to the most atom-economic reducing agent dihydrogen (H2), only few catalysts for the challenging E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation have been disclosed, each with a unique substrate scope profile. Here, we show that a commercially available nickel catalyst facilitates the E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation of a wide variety of substituted internal alkynes. This results in a simple and broadly applicable overall protocol to stereoselectively access E-alkenes employing H2, which could serve as a general method for synthesis.

- Fabrication of Ni3N nanorods anchored on N-doped carbon for selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes
-
Nickel is a highly active catalyst for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. However, the low selectivity of the alkene product caused by the over-hydrogenation reaction on Ni has hindered its practical applications. In this work, we report a new nickel nitride (Ni3N)-catalyzed semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to the corresponding alkenes. The Ni3N nanorods were facilely fabricated via a direct pyrolysis of the solid mixture of nickel acetate tetrahydrate and melamine (Mlm). The Ni3N phase in the optimum catalyst (Ni3N/NC-6/5-550) is shown to be effective and stable in the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes, with a high yield and good selectivity for alkenes (Z/E ratios up to >99/1). Both terminal and internal alkynes bearing a broad scope of functional groups are readily converted into alkenes with good chemo- and stereoselectivity. Notably, it was found that the over-hydrogenation can be markedly suppressed even at high conversion of alkyne. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the low interaction between the alkene product and the Ni3N might plays a critical role in the selectivity enhancement.

- Air-Stable Fe3O4@SiO2-EDTA-Ni(0) as an Efficient Recyclable Magnetic Nanocatalyst for Effective Suzuki-Miyaura and Heck Cross-Coupling via Aryl Sulfamates and Carbamates
-
The synthesis of inexpensive and novel air-stable Ni(0) nanoparticles immobilized on the EDTA-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 nanocatalyst was investigated in Suzuki-Miyaura and Heck cross-coupling reactions. This catalytic system displayed a greatly improved substrate scope for the carbon–carbon bond formations starting from a wide range of green and economical electrophiles aryl and heteroaryl carbamates and sulfamates via highly efficient method under mild, operationally simple reaction conditions. The synthesized heterogeneous catalyst was also fully characterized by FT-IR, TEM, XRD, DLS, FE-SEM, UV–Vis, EDX, XPS, TGA, NMR, VSM, ICP and elemental analysis techniques. The heterogeneous magnetic nanocatalyst can easily be recovered by an external magnetic field and reused for the next reactions for at least seven times with negligible leaching of catalyst and no substantial decrement in the activity. All these highlights have made the present protocol an interesting, simple and environmentally benign process with low catalyst loading and easy manipulations.

- Biogenic synthesis of palladium nanoparticles using Boswellia sarrata and their applications in cross-coupling reactions
-
A facile and green route for biogenic synthesis of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) using aqueous extract of nontoxic and renewable Boswellia sarrata leaves is reported. The as-synthesized PdNPs were systematically characterized by using ultraviolet (UV)–visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The PdNPs were crystalline and cubic in nature with average particle size of ~6 nm and successfully employed as heterogeneous catalyst in the Suzuki–Miyaura and Mizoroki–Heck cross-coupling reactions. The PdNPs could be recycled up to five times with modest change in the catalytic activity.

- Highly effective cellulose supported 2-aminopyridine palladium complex (Pd(II)-AMP-Cell?Al2O3) for Suzuki-Miyaura and Mizoroki–Heck cross-coupling
-
In the present work, a novel, highly efficient, retrievable organo–inorganic hybrid heterogeneous catalyst (Pd(II)-AMP-Cell?Al2O3) has been prepared by covalent grafting of 2-aminopyridine on chloropropyl modified cellulose-alumina composite followed by complexation with palladium acetate. The catalyst was characterized by techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductive coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The catalyst has been successfully employed in Suzuki-Miyaura as well as Mizoroki–Heck cross-coupling reactions. The reactions proceed smoothly resulting in the high yields of cross-coupling products (81 to 95%) within short reaction times. The catalyst can be efficiently recovered by simple filtration and reused for multiple cycles without considerable loss in the catalytic activity. The key-features of the present protocol include mild reaction conditions, simple work-up procedure, high stability of the catalyst, high turnover number (TON) and frequency (TOF), ease recovery and reusability of the catalyst.

- Synthesis of Pd@graphene oxide framework nanocatalyst with enhanced activity in Heck-Mizoroki cross-coupling reaction
-
A new method was developed for producing a catalyst involving a Pd nanoparticle (NP) embedded in a graphene oxide framework (Pd@GOF) with ordered macro- and mesoporous structures. First, 5,5′-diamino-2,2′-bipyridine was selected as cross-linking for covalent modification of GO nanosheets to prepare a three-dimensional (3D) framework with interlayer spaces in which well-dispersed and ultra-small Pd NPs in situ grew and embedded the framework. The synthesized nanopores 3D Pd@GOF can act as nanoreactors to help the reaction substrates thoroughly come into contact with the surface of Pd NPs, thereby exhibiting high activity toward the Heck reaction, rarely reported concerning Pd NPs supported on one-side functionalized graphene. The Pd@GOF catalyst can be used 10 times without any significant loss in the catalytic activity, confirming the long-term stability of this catalyst. Therefore, the covalently assembled GOF was proposed as a universal platform for hosting noble metal NPs to construct the desired metal@GOF nanocatalyst with improved activity and stability that can be used in a broad range of practical applications.

- Base-Controlled Heck, Suzuki, and Sonogashira Reactions Catalyzed by Ligand-Free Platinum or Palladium Single Atom and Sub-Nanometer Clusters
-
The assumption that oxidative addition is the key step during the cross-coupling reaction of aryl halides has led to the development of a plethora of increasingly complex metal catalysts, thereby obviating in many cases the exact influence of the base, which is a simple, inexpensive, and necessary reagent for this paramount transformation. Here, a combined experimental and computational study shows that the oxidative addition is not the single kinetically relevant step in different cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by sub-nanometer Pt or Pd species, since the reactivity control is shifted toward subtle changes in the base. The exposed metal atoms in the cluster cooperate to enable an extremely easy oxidative addition of the aryl halide, even chlorides, and allow the base to bifurcate the coupling. With sub-nanometer Pd species, amines drive to the Heck reaction, carbonate drives to the Sonogahira reaction, and phosphate drives to the Suzuki reaction, while for Pt clusters and single atoms, good conversion is only achieved using acetate as a base. This base-controlled orthogonal reactivity with ligand-free catalysts opens new avenues in the design of cross-coupling reactions in organic synthesis.

- Templating effect of carbon nanoforms on highly cross-linked imidazolium network: Catalytic activity of the resulting hybrids with Pd nanoparticles
-
Two different carbon nanoforms (CNFs), namely multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon nanohorns (CNHs), have been chosen as support for the direct polymerization of a bis-vinylimidazolium salt. Transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed a templating effect of the CNFs on the growth of the polymeric network, which perfectly covers their whole surfaces creating a cylindrical or spherical coating for MWCNTs and CNHs, respectively. Subsequently, the CNFs-polyimidazolium have been used as stabilizers for Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs), and the obtained materials have been characterized by means of analytical and spectroscopic techniques and then employed as easily recoverable and recyclable catalysts for Suzuki and Heck reactions. Quantitative conversions have been obtained in almost all the explored reactions, even employing low loading of catalyst (down to 0.007 mol%). Suzuki reactions were carried out in pure water under aerobic conditions. Both materials showed excellent activity and recyclability for the investigated C-C coupling reactions, with the CNHs-based material resulting slightly more active than the MWCNTs-based one due to a higher superficial exposure of Pd NPs.

- Tetranuclear Palladium Complexes of Abnormal N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands and their Catalytic Activities in Mizoroki-Heck Coupling Reaction of Electron-Rich Aryl Chlorides
-
Based on the ligand scaffold of an imidazolyl/benziimidazolyl moiety and a N-CH2C(=O)NHPh substituent, two series of ligand precursors with ortho hydroxy groups incorporated on the N-phenyl rings were prepared. The structural fine tuning of the ligand scaffold allowed the synthesis of tetranuclear palladium complexes with abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene (aNHC) ligands. For precursors with C2-methyl blocking groups, pyridine-assisted C?H bond activation led to the formation of mononuclear tridentate palladium aNHC complexes or tetranuclear complexes with tridentate CNO donors. Representative mononuclear and tetranuclearpalladium aNHC complexes were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction studies, revealing very short Pd?C bond distances. The tetranuclear palladium aNHC complexes were very effective in catalyzing Mizoroki-Heck coupling reaction, and were capable of employing a range of aryl chlorides including deactivated substrates with low palladium loading of 0.2 mol%. - Homoleptic cis- and trans-palladium(II) bis(guanidinato) complexes derived from N-aryl-N′,N″-di(pyridin-2-yl)- and N-aryl-N′,N″-bis(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)guanidines: Catalysts for Heck-Mizoroki coupling reactions
-
N-Aryl-N′,N″-di(pyridin-2-yl)- and N-aryl-N′,N″-bis(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)guanidines (1–4 and 5–7) were isolated in 75%–81% yields. Reactions of Pd(OAc)2 with guanidines 2–7 carried out separately in toluene at 60 °C for 3 h afforded 8–13 respectively in 69%–80% yields. Compounds 1–13 were characterized by elemental analyses, HR-MS, IR and NMR (1H and 13C) spectroscopy. Molecular structures of guanidines 1, 4, 5 and 6 and those of 8–13 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Pd(II) atom in 8–10 revealed trans geometry while that in 11–13 revealed cis geometry. DFT calculations were carried out on model compounds 9a (trans) and its hypothetical cis isomer, 9b and 12a (cis) and its hypothetical trans isomer 12b which indicated a very small energy difference between the 9a/9b pair (1.28 kcal/mol) whereas a large energy difference was observed between the 12a/12b pair (26.38 kcal/mol) in CH2Cl2. The catalytic utility of 9 in Heck-Mizoroki coupling reactions involving styrene and methyl acrylate and aryl bromides/aryl chlorides in the presence of NaOAc and excess of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) at 120 °C was explored. Both activated and de-activated aryl bromides and aryl chlorides were coupled with styrene and in addition, the aryl chlorides were coupled with methyl acrylate in the presence of 9 to afford the respective coupling products in 68% ? >99% yields. Neat reaction carried out with 9 and TBAB under the optimized condition released the colloidal Pd black as verified by EDAX, PXRD and SEM techniques thereby implying the heterogeneous nature of catalysis.

- Palladium(ii) ligated with a selenated (Se, CNHC, N-)-type pincer ligand: An efficient catalyst for Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling in water
-
A new 1-[N-benzylacetamido]-3-[1-(2-phenylselenylethyl)]benzimidazolium chloride (L), the precursor of a novel (Se, CNHC, N-)-type pincer ligand (L) was synthesised in high yield through a sequence of consecutive reactions of 1H-benzimidazole with ethylene dichloride, sodium selenophenolate, and N-benzyl-2-chloroacetamide. The palladium-promoted reaction of L with PdCl2 resulted in a moisture- and air-insensitive complex [Pd(L-H2Cl)Cl] (1), which demonstrated outstanding catalytic potential for Mizoroki-Heck coupling of aromatic bromides and chlorides (with yields up to 94% and 70%, respectively) at very low catalyst loading (0.2 mol%) and under mild reaction conditions in water. The complex (1) was also investigated for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and found to be selectively efficient (yields up to 94%) for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aromatic bromides at 0.01 mol% of 1 in water. All coupling reactions were carried out in the green and economical solvent, water, which is highly desirable for bulk synthesis of complex molecules in industry. During the catalytic process, complex 1 converted into PdSe nanoparticles (NPs, size range 5-6 nm) in situ. The morphology and composition of these NPs were analysed through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively. The core-level, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of stable Pd0 and Pd2+ oxidation states in these PdSe NPs. Based on further experimental investigations, these nanoparticles were found to work as a stock of true catalytic species. The hot filtration test, as well as the two-phase test, confirmed the largely homogeneous nature of the catalytic process, which probably proceeds by leaching of solution-phase Pd species from these NPs.

- Convenient and efficient Suzuki–Miyaura and Heck–Mizoroki cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by 1,3,4-trisubstituted-1,2,3-triazolium iodide and palladium salt systems
-
A series of 1,3,4-trisubstituted-1,2,3-triazolium iodide salts (4a–c) were synthesized via a three-step reaction sequence. Corresponding anilines (1a–c) were converted to azides (2a–c) which were then treated with phenylacetylene with “Click” chemistry to access 1,4-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles (3a–c). Subsequent methylation of 1,4-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles (3a–c) yielded 1,3,4-trisubstituted-1,2,3-triazoliumiodide salts (4a–c) in appreciable yields. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, ATR–IR spectroscopic techniques and elemental analyses. Additionally, the structure of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-phenyl-1,2,3-triazole (3b) was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The catalytic activity of 4a–c in a catalytic system consisting of 1,3,4-trisubstituted-1,2,3-triazoliumiodide salt/palladium(II) acetate/base were investigated toward Suzuki–Miyaura and Heck–Mizoroki cross-coupling reactions. The Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reactions were carried out under mild reaction conditions with good to excellent yields, whereas Heck–Mizoroki cross-coupling reactions were performed at elevated temperature with moderate yields. Further, in situ method skips the synthetic procedure of preparing the palladium(II) complexes and hence is more economical and less tedious. (Figure presented.).

- Multi-functionalized ionic liquid with in situ-generated palladium nanoparticles for Suzuki, Heck coupling reaction: a comparison with deep eutectic solvents
-
Abstract: A new catalytic system for Suzuki and Heck coupling has been developed from multi-functionalized task specific ionic liquid (TSIL) and in situ formed palladium nanoparticles (PdNps). The generated PdNPs were characterized by UV–Visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. These PdNPs have found size below 10?nm and exhibited a excellent catalytic activity in the cross-coupling of aryl halide without using external phosphine ligand. Along with electron deficient olefins, electron rich olefins were also undergo smooth reaction giving excellent yield. The results obtained in ionic liquid are compared with results obtained in deep eutectic solvents. Progress of reaction was found very smooth in ionic liquid rather than in deep eutectic solvents. The aqueous system containing ionic liquid along with PdNPs was recycled for seven times, without any significant loss. Graphical abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

- SBA-15/POSS-Imidazolium Hybrid as Catalytic Nanoreactor: the role of the Support in the Stabilization of Palladium Species for C?C Cross Coupling Reactions.
-
Supported imidazolium modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) on SBA-15 have been used as platform for Pd(II) species. The so-obtained material was firstly characterized by means of TGA, solid state NMR, TEM, XPS, SAXS, porosimetry and ICP-OES and it was successfully tested as pre-catalyst in C?C cross couplings, namely Suzuki-Miyaura and Heck reactions. In both cases, the solid proved to be highly efficient and easily recoverable from the reaction mixture. The recyclability was verified for up to seven cycles without showing any activity decrease. Interestingly, only Pd(II) was detected in the reused catalyst in the Heck reaction. Therefore, the versatility of the material was investigated by using various aryl halides. Our palladium nanocomposite was able to promote both Suzuki and Heck reactions down to 0.0007 mol% showing outstanding turnover frequency (TOF) values of 114,286 and 32,381 h?1, respectively. Comparison with the palladium catalyst on SiO2-POSS-imidazolium support showed interesting differences in terms of stabilization of Pd species and recyclability. The excellent outcome of the reactions could be ascribed to the textural properties of the SBA-15 support and the presence of the imidazolium-POSS nanocage within the pores of SBA-15, that worked as a sort of nanoreactor.
