- Palladium-Catalyzed Regioselective C-Benzylation via a Rearrangement Reaction: Access to Benzyl-Substituted Anilines
-
An unprecedented C-benzylation rearrangement reaction, catalyzed by palladium, is reported. The reaction proceeds by rearrangement leading to the direct synthesis of para or ortho benzyl-substituted N-methylanilines. The product is obtained in high regioselectivity, without the need to use a ligand for the catalytic process.

- Gas-phase generation and cyclisation reactions of imidoyl radicals
-
Some 1,2-diarylimidoyl radicals were generated in the gas-phase by intramolecular radical translocation from ortho-imino-aryloxyl radicals, in turn generated under flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) conditions. The imidoyls reacted with XR ortho′-substituents in the N-aryl group to give (in most cases) modest yields of cyclisation products. Depending on the nature of the bridging atom (X), the formation of these products was initiated either by a further hydrogen atom translocation (X = CH2), or by ipso-attack onto the aryl group (R = Ph), or by direct substitution at the heteroatom (X = S). With XR = N(Me)Ph, the major reaction product was probably the result of a competing pathway not involving the corresponding imidoyl.

- Olefin isomerization reactions catalyzed by ruthenium hydrides bearing Schiff base ligands
-
A series of in situ-generated ruthenium hydride complexes Ru(PPh 3)2(CO)H(Ln) (n = a-h) incorporating a Schiff base ligand was investigated for the isomerization of olefins. 1H-NMR was used to characterize the new hydride species in combination with 31P-NMR. Allylbenzene and 1-octene were used as model substrates. Temperature, solvents and catalyst/substrate mole ratio were taken into account as parameters to optimize the isomerization reaction. All catalysts showed the best performance in 2-butanol, suggesting that the catalytic activity depends not only strongly on the steric and electronic environment of the ruthenium but also on the chosen solvent.

- Ortho-substituted aniline-N-salicylidenes as corrosion inhibitors for zinc in sulphuric acid
-
The corrosion of zinc in sulphuric acid containing different o-substituted aniline-N-salicylidenes has been studied with respect to inhibitor and acid concentration, period of exposure and temperature. All the five compounds studies show high (95-97%) inhibitive efficiency. At 0.5% inhibitor concentration in 0.5 M acid, the order of efficiency is: o-HNS (95.5%) o-CNS (96.8%) o-AnNS (99.7%) ≤ o-TNS (99.8%) ≤ ANS (99.9%). The activation energies are higher in inhibited than in uninhibited acid. It appears that an efficient inhibitor is characterized by a relatively greater decrease in the free energy of adsorption. Galvanostatic polarization studies indicate that these are mixed type inhibitors with predominant action on the local cathodes. Cathodic protection in the presence of these inhibitors has been studied. The inhibitors appear to function through adsorption due to the presence of the imine (-C=N-) group and conjugated double bonds.
