The invention relates to 3-methyl-2-butene-1-aldehyde diisopentenyl acetal, which comprises 3-methyl-3-(3-methyl-2-butene-1-oxygen)-1-butene with the mass content of less than 450mg/kg. The prepared 3-methyl-2-butene-1-aldehyde diisopentenyl acetal is high in storage safety and good in stability.

Oxalic acid, which is considered as a mild acid, allows a smooth dehydration- without polymerisation- of 2-methylbut-3-en-2-ol 1 into isoprene with around 46percent yield.The remander of the reaction mixture featuring a nice fragance, consists of a mixture of 25 identified products composed of a set of cyclic and non cyclic ethers, and of monoterpenes.Fourteen products could be isolated by preparative vapor phase chromattography and identified with authentic products by 1H and 13C NMR.The formation of the observed products can be rationalized on the basis of currently admitted reaction mechanisms. A number of efficient catalytic procedures for the oxidation of acid-sensitive substrate such as 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol to the corresponding ketone (2-methyl-butan-2-ol-3-one) are compared.Reaction with dioxygen (or quinone) and a palladium precursor (PdCl2 or ) under mild conditions (=35 deg C), gave good conversions (98percent) and good selectivities (=90percent).
