- Electrochemical cross-coupling reactions of sodium arenesulfinates with thiophenols and phenols
-
A green electrochemical oxidative cross-coupling protocol for the generation of thiosulfonates and sulfonate esters using sodium arenesulfinates and thiophenols/phenols is disclosed. The protocol involves using inorganic and non-toxic NaI as both redox catalyst and supporting electrolyte at room temperature without oxidant and base. The reactions provide good yields of products and tolerate broad substrate scope. The mechanistic studies revealed that the reactions proceed via a radical pathway for the formation of SO2–S and SO2–O bonds.

- Transition-Metal-Free and Visible-Light-Mediated Desulfonylation and Dehalogenation Reactions: Hantzsch Ester Anion as Electron and Hydrogen Atom Donor
-
Novel approaches for N- and O-desulfonylation under room temperature (rt) and transition-metal-free conditions have been developed. The first methodology involves the transformation of a variety of N-sulfonyl heterocycles and phenyl benzenesulfonates to the corresponding desulfonylated products in good to excellent yields using only KOtBu in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at rt. Alternately, a visible light method has been used for deprotection of N-methyl-N-arylsulfonamides with Hantzsch ester (HE) anion serving as the visible-light-absorbing reagent and electron and hydrogen atom donor to promote the desulfonylation reaction. The HE anion can be easily prepared in situ by reaction of the corresponding HE with KOtBu in DMSO at rt. Both protocols were further explored in terms of synthetic scope as well as mechanistic aspects to rationalize key features of desulfonylation processes. Furthermore, the HE anion induces reductive dehalogenation reaction of aryl halides under visible light irradiation.

- The Synthesis and Catalytic Activity of New Mixed NHC-Phosphite Nickel(0) Complexes
-
Herein we describe the synthesis and isolation of the first low-valent NHC-phosphite nickel complexes of general formula Ni(NHC)[P(OAr)3]2. These three-coordinate Ni(0) compounds were fully characterized, including by X-ray crystallography that highlighted their trigonal planar geometry. The representative complex Ni(IMes)[P(OPh)3]2 was used to show that a phosphite ligand is readily substituted in the presence of an aldehyde or nitrile. These stoichiometric studies then led to an investigation of their catalytic properties in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions between aryl tosylates and aryl boronic acids, a first for such a NHC-Ni catalyst. Finally, mechanistic investigations led to the isolation of a well-defined oxidative addition product.

- Copper-Catalyzed C-S Bond Formation via the Cleavage of C-O Bonds in the Presence of S8 as the Sulfur Source
-
Useful and applicable methods for one-pot and odorless synthesis of unsymmetrical and symmetrical diaryl sulfides via C-O bond activation are presented. First, a new efficient procedure for the synthesis of unsymmetrical sulfides using the cross-coupling reaction of phenolic esters such as acetates, tosylates, and triflates and with arylboronic acid or triphenyltin chloride as the coupling partners is reported. Depending on the reaction, S 8 /KF or S 8 /NaO t -Bu system is found to be an effective source of sulfur in the presence of copper salts and in poly(ethylene glycol) as a green solvent. Then, the synthesis of symmetrical diaryl sulfides from phenolic compounds by using S 8 as the sulfur source and NaO t -Bu in anhydrous DMF at 120 °C under N 2 is described. By these protocols, the synthesis of a variety of unsymmetrical and symmetrical sulfides become easier than the available protocols in which thiols and aryl halides are directly used for the preparation of the sulfides.

- Decarbonylative Cyanation of Amides by Palladium Catalysis
-
Transition-metal-catalyzed cyanation of aryl halides is a process of significant importance in the preparation pharmaceuticals, organic materials and agrochemicals. Here, we demonstrate a palladium-catalyzed decarbonylative cyanation of amides by highly selective carbon-nitrogen bond cleavage for the synthesis of a wide range of aryl nitriles. The utility of this technology is demonstrated by the synthesis of isotopically labeled aryl nitriles and orthogonal cross-coupling reactions of bench-stable amides to establish cross-coupling synthons with opposite polarity.

- Copper-Catalyzed Regioselective C-H Sulfonyloxylation of Electron-Rich Arenes with p-Toluenesulfonic Acid and Sulfonyloxylation of Aryl(mesityl)iodonium Sulfonates
-
Copper-catalyzed regioselective C-H sulfonyloxylation of electron-rich arenes with p-toluenesulfonic acid has been developed. Electron-rich benzene derivatives and heteroarenes can undergo this C-H sulfonyloxylation reaction to generate aryl tosylates. Furthermore, sulfonyloxylation of aryl(mesityl)iodonium sulfonates has also been investigated. Both aryl(mesityl)iodonium tosylates and triflates can react smoothly to get aryl sulfonates. The formed aryl sulfonates can be converted to phenols, as well as used as good partners of cross-coupling reactions.

Inter alia, the first titania-catalyzed [18F]-radiofluorination in highly aqueous medium is provided. In embodiments, the method utilizes titanium dioxide, 1 : 1 acetonitrile- thexyl alcohol solvent mixture and tetrabutylammonium bicarbonate as a base. Radiolabeling may be directly performed with aqueous [18F]fluoride without the need for drying/azeotroping step, which reduces radiosynthesis time while keeping high fluoride conversion. The general applicability of the synthetic strategy to the synthesis of the wide range of PET probes from tosylated precursors is demonstrated.

- Titania-catalyzed radiofluorination of tosylated precursors in highly aqueous medium
-
Nucleophilic radiofluorination is an efficient synthetic route to many positron-emission tomography (PET) probes, but removal of water to activate the cyclotron-produced [18F]fluoride has to be performed prior to reaction, which significantly increases overall radiolabeling time and causes radioactivity loss. In this report, we demonstrate the possibility of 18F-radiofluorination in highly aqueous medium. The method utilizes titania nanoparticles, 1:1 (v/v) acetonitrile-thexyl alcohol solvent mixture, and tetra-n-butylammonium bicarbonate as a phase-transfer agent. Efficient radiolabeling is directly performed with aqueous [18F]fluoride without the need for a drying/azeotroping step to significantly reduce radiosynthesis time. High radiochemical purity of the target compound is also achieved. The substrate scope of the synthetic strategy is demonstrated with a range of aromatic, aliphatic, and cycloaliphatic tosylated precursors.

- N-heterocyclic carbene derived Nickel-Pincer complexes: Efficient and applicable catalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions of aryl/alkenyl tosylates and mesylates
-
Catalytic activities of NHC-derived nickel-pincer complexes for the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions of aryl/alkenyl to- sylates and mesylates are described. In the presence of a catalytic amount of nickelacycle 1a, a wide array of tosylates and mesylates reacted with several aryl- and alkenylboronic acids to afford the coupling products, generally in high yields. Fine tuning of the reaction conditions for each class of electrophiles was achieved only by choosing the appropriate reaction medium (DME for tosylates, dioxane for mesylates).

- Palladium-catalyzed amination of aryl and heteroaryl tosylates at room temperature
-
Mild palladium-catalyzed aminations of aryl tosylates and the first aminations of heteroaryl tosylates are described. In the presence of the combination of L2Pd(0) (L = P(o-tol)3) and the hindered Josiphos ligand CyPF-t-Bu, a variety of primary alkylamines and arylamines react with both aryl and heteroaryl tosylates at room temperature to form the corresponding secondary arylamines in high yields with complete selectivity for the monoarylamine. These reactions at room temperature occur in many cases with catalyst loadings of 0.1 mol % and 0.01 mol % in one case, constituting the most efficient aminations of aryl tosylates by nearly 2 orders of magnitude. This catalyst is made practical by the development of a convenient method to synthesize the L2Pd(0) precursor. This complex is stable to air as a solid. In contrast to conventional relative rates for reactions of aryl sulfonates, the reactions of aryl tosylates are faster than parallel reactions of aryl triflates, and the reactions of aryl tosylates are faster than parallel or competitive reactions of aryl chlorides. - Kinetic study of alkaline hydrolysis of substituted phenyl tosylates. XXII. Variation of ortho substituent effect with solvent
-
The second-order rate constants k (dm3 mol-1 s -1) for the alkaline hydrolysis of meta-, para-, and ortho-substituted phenyl tosylates 4-CH3C6H 4SO2OC6H4-X in aqueous 0.5 M Bu 4NBr have been measured spectrophotometrically in a wide temperature range. The log k values for ortho-substituted derivatives at various temperatures together with meta- and para-substituted derivatives were analyzed using the modified Fujita-Nishioka equation log km,p,ortho = c 0 + c1(m,p,ortho)σ° + c 2(ortho)σ1 + c3(1/T) + c 4(m,p,ortho)(1/T)σ° + c5(ortho)(1/T) σI. In order to study the dependence of substituent effects, especially ortho inductive and resonance terms on different solvent parameters, the following equation was used: Δlog km,p,ortho = c 0 + c1(m,p,ortho)σ° + c 2(ortho)σI + c3ΔE + c 4ΔY + c5ΔP + c 6(m,p,ortho)ΔEσ° + + c 7(m,p,ortho)ΔYσ° + c 8(m,p,ortho)ΔPσ° + c 9(ortho)ΔEσI + c 10(ortho)ΔYσI + c 11(ortho)ΔPσI. Δlog k = log k X - log kH, σ° and σI, are the Taft polar and inductive substituent constants, E, Y and P, are the solvent electrophilicity, polarity and polarizability parameters, respectively. In data treatment ΔE = ES - EH2O, ΔY = YS - YH2O, ΔP = PS - PH2O were used. The solvent electrophilicity was found to be the main factor responsible for changes in the ortho, para, and meta polar substituent effects with medium. The variation of the ortho inductive term with the solvent electrophilicity E S was found to be twice smaller than that for para substituents, while the ortho resonance term appeared to vary with solvent nearly similarly to that for para substituents. The ortho effect caused by the supplementary inductive effect from ortho position was found to disappear in a solvent whose electrophilic solvating power is comparable to pure DMSO (E ≈ 4).
