- Sodium copper chlorophyllin catalyzed chemoselective oxidation of benzylic alcohols and diarylmethanes in water
-
We report the highly efficient and chemoselective oxidation of benzylic alcohols catalyzed by sodium copper chlorophyllin in water, producing corresponding arylcarbonyl compounds. Importantly, the catalytic system exhibits a wide substrate scope and high functional group tolerance. Moreover, secondary alcohols and even diarylmethanes were smoothly oxidized to the desired aryl ketones with excellent yields.

- Fries rearrangement: Scalable synthesis of key fluoro building blocks 3-fluoro-4-methoxybenzoyl chloride and 1,2-diethoxy-3-fluorobenzene
-
Lewis acid catalyzed Fries rearrangement of 2-fluorophenyl acetate (3) was performed on kg scale. The ortho 5 and para 4 isomers obtained were separated in an industrially feasible way. Compound 4 was then converted into fluorinated building block 3-fluoro-4-methoxybenzoyl chloride (1) while compound 5 was converted into 1,2-diethoxy-3-fluorobenzene (2) in high yields.

- Synthesis of fluorosubstituted three ring esters and their dielectric properties
-
Laterally substituted by fluorine atoms 4-cyanophenyl 4-(4- pentylbenzoyloxy)-benzoates have been prepared and their phase transition temperatures, enthalpies and dielectric properties upon frequency were evaluated. The novel compounds exhibit a broad range of nematic mesophase, large positive dielectric anisotropy changing sign at low frequency. They are convenient components of LC mixtures for dual frequency addressing devices. Copyright Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

- Steric Enhancement of Resonance-Evidence from Kinetic Study on some Acetophenones
-
The kinetics of oxidation of some mono-, di- and tri-substituted acetophenones by alkaline hexacyanoferrate(III) in 50percent (v/v) methanol-water mixture at constant ionic strength and at 20, 30 and 40 deg have been studied spectrophotometrically and the rate constants determined by least-squares analysis.Electron-withdrawing groups in the ring facilitate the oxidation of the acetyl function while electron-releasing groups retard the rate. The rate constant values for the oxidation of 3-substituted-4-alkoxy-acetophenones are computed based on the principle of additivity of group effects. The observed rate constants are significantly lower than the calculated values. This is attributed to the phenomenon of steric enhancement of resonance (SER). 3,5-Disubstituted-4-methoxyacetophenones have higher observed rate constant values than the calculated ones. The steric inhibition of resonance (SIR) operates in these systems. In the case of 3-halogeno-4-methoxyacetophenones, the importance of SER increases with increase in the bulkiness of the 3-substituents.The difference between the calculated and observed multiple substituent constants of 3-substituted-4-methoxyacetophenones also lends support for SER.

- The Synthesis and Liquid Crystal Properties of Some Laterally Fluorinated trans-Cyclohexane-1-carboxylate and Benzoate Esters
-
A large number of laterally fluorinated 4-n-alkyl- and -alkoxy-phenyl 4'-n-alkyl- and -alkoxy-bezoates and 4-n-alkylphenyl trans-4'-n-alkyl- and -alkoxy-cyclohexane-1-carboxylates were synthesised. In these compounds, the lateral fluoro-substituent was situated in either the phenol or the carboxylic acid moiety of the molecules for the benzoate esters, but only in the phenol moiety for the trans-cyclohexane-1-carboxylate esters. The nematic thermal stabilities for the fluorophenyl bezoate and trans-cyclohexane-1-carboxylate esters and the fluorobenzoate esters were compared with those for the corresponding non-fluorinated analogues.A nematic thermal efficiency order was derived for the 4-n-alkyl-fluorophenyl 4-n-alkylbezoate and trans-4-n-alkylcyclohexane-1-carboxylate esters, but only in the case of the latter esters, which were extensively examined, was the smectic tendency of the system investigated.Explanations are given for the observed nematic and smectic thermal stabilities of the titled esters, and some of their physical properties are discussed.
