- Heterogenization of (η5-C5Me5) Ru(PPh3)2Cl and its catalytic application for cyclopropanation of styrene using ethyl diazoacetate
-
(η5-C5Me5)Ru(PPh3) 2Cl (1) is heterogenized on the surface of mesoporous molecular sieves by direct grafting on mesoporous aluminosilicates or by reaction of an aminosilane-linker-modified silicate surface with the chloride ligand. Elemental analyses reveal that the grafted samples contain 0.2-1.8 wt% Ru. The retaining of long-range ordering of mesoporous MCM-41 and MCM-48 after grafting is evidenced from XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption and TEM analysis. FT-IR, TG-MS, 29Si and 1H CP MAS-NMR spectra confirm the successful grafting of complex 1 on the surface of these mesoporous materials. Mesoporous materials grafted with complex 1 are found to be promising catalysts for the cyclopropanation of styrene with ethyl diazoacetate. Georg Thieme Verlag Stuttgart.

- Practical preparation method of polymer-incarcerated (PI) palladium catalysts using Pd(II) salts
-
Polymer-incarcerated (PI) palladium catalyst was practically prepared from inexpensive Pd(II) salts and a polystyrene-based copolymer under reducing conditions. Remarkable effects of alkali metal salts on the palladium loading were observed. PI Pd thus prepared showed high catalytic activity in Mizoroki-Heck reactions and Suzuki-Miyaura couplings with a range of substrates including an aryl chloride. In all cases, the Pd catalyst was recovered quantitatively without leaching, and reused several times without significant loss of activity.

- NC-palladacycles as highly effective cheap precursors for the phosphine-free Heck reactions
-
Eight cyclopalladated complexes of the formula [Pd2(μ-L)2(N-C)2] (L=OAc, Cl; N-C=cyclometalled N donor: o-(2-pyridyl)phenyl, o-(2-pyridyloxy)phenyl, o-(2-pyridylmethyl)phenyl, o-(N,N-dimethylaminomethyl)phenyl, 8-quinolylmethyl and others) and a six-membered palladacycle with OC coordination (ligand related to 2-acetoamido-4-nitrophenyl), are highly efficient catalysts for the Heck arylation of olefins (styrene, ethyl acrylate) by aryl halides (iodobenzene, bromobenzene, 4-bromoacetophenone). These catalysts are air stable, easy to obtain from a vast number of readily available nitrogen containing molecules, are generally much cheaper than phosphine-ligated palladacycles, but as or more efficient than the latter. Turnover numbers (ton) of up to 4 100 000 and turnover frequencies (tof) up to 530 000 are achieved in the reaction of iodobenzene with ethyl acrylate. Bromobenzene undergoes the Heck reaction (ton=400-700; tof=5-30) in the presence of the promoter additive Bu4NBr. The palladacycles are likely to operate in a common phosphine-free Pd(0)/Pd(II) catalytic cycle, while the differences between various types of palladacycle precursors are accounted for by the kinetics of the catalyst preactivation step.

- Surface-active ionic liquids for palladium-catalysed cross coupling in water: Effect of ionic liquid concentration on the catalytically active species
-
We report the design and synthesis of surface-active ionic liquids for application in palladium-catalyzed cross coupling reactions. A series of dodecylimidazolium-based ionic liquids were applied as additives in the Heck reaction of ethyl acrylate and iodobenzene, and high yields of >90% could be obtained in water without the addition of further ligands. Our results indicate that the ionic liquid concentration in water is the key factor affecting the formation of the catalytically active species and hence the yield. Moreover, imidazolium-based ionic liquids that are able to form a carbene species differ significantly from conventional cationic surfactants, as a concentration dependent formation of the N-heterocyclic carbene complex was observed.

- Hexacoordinate phosphonium salts incorporating two (8-dimethylamino)-1-naphthyl ligands. Structure and reactivity
-
New hexacoordinate phosphonium salts Ar2RZP+ X-[Ar = (8-dimethylamino)-1-naphthyl] with two N→P intramolecular coordinations are described. NMR studies of these salts and the X-ray structure of one of them. 5 (R = Ph, Z = H, X = Br) show that they have a dissymmetric structure with the two Me2N groups coordinated at the phosphorus centre. Salts 4 (R = Ph or Me, Z = CH2CO2Et) react slowly with PhCHO under Wittig conditions probably because of the steric hindrance around the phosphorus atom. This is confirmed by the higher reactivity of the less hindered pentacoordinate phosphonium salts ArR2P+CH2CO2Et X- 11 (R = Ph or Me) which are also much more reactive than Ph3P+CH2CO2Et Br-. This study points out the increase of reactivity of these salts due to the N→P interaction.

- A Straightforward, Purification-Free Procedure for the Synthesis of Ando and Still-Gennari Type Phosphonates
-
Z-Selective Still-Gennari and Ando modifications of the typically E-selective Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction are highly valuable synthetic tools in organic chemistry. These procedures are based on application of bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphonates or diaryl phosphonates, respectively, for the olefination of carbonyl groups. In our research, we present an improved, straightforward, purificationfree procedure for the synthesis of these reagents. The key step of our procedure is the reaction of phosphonic dichlorides with the appropriate sodium alkoxides, which results in 52-97% isolated yields of the desired products on a gram scale. The whole three-step process is performed in one pot. Most importantly, the product is obtained in over 95% purity after simple extraction, avoiding column chromatography and distillation. Moreover, we present the synthesis of a novel Still-Gennari type reagent, bis(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl) phosphonates, which may exhibit improved Z-selectivity in Still-Gennari olefinations.

- Synthesis of α-diazoesters from α-hydrazonoesters: Utilization of α-hydrazonoesters and α-diazoesters for convenient interconversion
-
We have developed a novel method to synthesize α-diazoesters from α-hydrazonoesters with a catalytic amount of Cu(OAc)2 in acetonitrile. When the reaction was carried out under an argon atmosphere, the reaction stopped halfway, suggesting that this reaction required oxygen to reoxidize the catalyst. Since hydrazonoesters can be obtained by reduction of α-diazoesters with P(n-Bu)3 in diisopropyl ether, these 2 compounds are mutually interconvertible with ease. Whereas α-diazoesters are unstable and unsuitable for storage, hydrazonoesters are more stable, especially crystalline hydrazonoesters. Thus, hydrazonoesters, which are suitable for long-term storage, could be conveniently used as precursors for α-diazoesters.

- Pd supported on clicked cellulose-modified magnetite-graphene oxide nanocomposite for C-C coupling reactions in deep eutectic solvent
-
Cellulose-modified magnetite-graphene oxide nanocomposite was prepared via click reaction and utilized for immobilization of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles without using additional reducing agent. The abundant OH groups of cellulose provided the uniform dispersion and high stability of Pd nanoparticles, while magnetite-graphene oxide as a supporting material offered high specific surface area and easy magnetic separation. The as-prepared nanocomposite served as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck and Sonogashira coupling reactions in various hydrophilic and hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as sustainable and environmentally benign reaction media. Among the fifteen DESs evaluated for coupling reactions, the hydrophilic DES composed of dimethyl ammonium chloride and glycerol exhibited the best results. Due to the low miscibility of catalyst and DES in organic solvents, the separated aqueous phase containing both of the catalyst and DES can be readily recovered by evaporating water and retrieved eight times with negligible loss of catalytic performance.

- Immobilizing palladium on melamine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles: An efficient and reusable phosphine-free catalyst for Mizoroki–Heck reaction
-
A highly efficient and stable heterogeneous catalyst was successfully prepared by anchoring palladium(0) onto melamine-functionalized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs-Mel-Pd). With the aid of amine functional groups, melamine was covalently bonded on epoxy functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and then Pd(0) was immobilized on this support with high dispersion. The prepared nanocatalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for C-C cross coupling (Mizoroki–Heck) of various aryl halides (iodide, bromides, and chrlorides) with olefins under mild reaction condition in relatively short reaction times. The synthesized nanocatalyst was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The loading level of Pd in MNPs-Mel-Pd catalyst was measured to be 1.26 × 10?3 mol g?1 by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). In addition, the catalyst can be easily separated and recovered from the reaction mixture by using an external magnet. The heterogeneity of the catalyst was confirmed by the hot filtration test, which was reused for at least six times under the optimized conditions without any significant loss of its activity.

- Selective Construction of C?C and C=C Bonds by Manganese Catalyzed Coupling of Alcohols with Phosphorus Ylides
-
Herein, we report the manganese catalyzed coupling of alcohols with phosphorus ylides. The selectivity in the coupling of primary alcohols with phosphorus ylides to form carbon-carbon single (C?C) and carbon-carbon double (C=C) bonds can be controlled by the ligands. In the conversion of more challenging secondary alcohols with phosphorus ylides the selectivity towards the formation of C?C vs. C=C bonds can be controlled by the reaction conditions, namely the amount of base. The scope and limitations of the coupling reactions were thoroughly evaluated by the conversion of 21 alcohols and 15 ylides. Notably, compared to existing methods, which are based on precious metal complexes as catalysts, the present catalytic system is based on earth abundant manganese catalysts. The reaction can also be performed in a sequential one-pot reaction generating the phosphorus ylide in situ followed manganese catalyzed C?C and C=C bond formation. Mechanistic studies suggest that the C?C bond was generated via a borrowing hydrogen pathway and the C=C bond formation followed an acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling pathway. (Figure presented.).

- Larvicidal activity and in silico studies of cinnamic acid derivatives against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae)
-
Cinnamic acid derivatives (CAD's) represent a great alternative in the search for insecticides against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes since they have antimicrobial and insecticide properties. Ae. aegypti is responsible for transmitting Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika viruses, among other arboviruses associated with morbimortality, especially in developing countries. In view of this, in vitro analyses of n-substituted cinnamic acids and esters were performed upon 4th instar larvae (L4) of Ae. aegypti, as well as, molecular docking studies to propose a potential biological target towards this mosquitoes species. The larvicide assays proved that n-substituted ethyl cinnamates showed a more pronounced activity than their corresponding acids, in which p-chlorocinnamate (3j) presented a LC50 value of 8.3 μg/mL. Thusly, external morphologic alterations (rigid and elongated body, curved bowel, and translucent or darkened anal papillae) of mosquitoes’ group exposed to compound 3j, were observed by microscopy. In addition, an analytical method was developed for the quantification of the most promising analog by using high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV). Molecular docking studies suggested that the larvicide action is associated with inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme. Therefore, expanding the larvicidal study with the cinnamic acid derivatives against the vector Ae. aegypti is important for finding search for more effective larvicides and with lower toxicity, since they have already shown good larvicidal properties against Ae. aegypti.

- Solvent role in the lipase-catalysed esterification of cinnamic acid and derivatives. Optimisation of the biotransformation conditions
-
The esterification of cinnamic acid has been deeply investigated using ethanol as nucleophile and Candida antarctica lipase type B (CAL-B) as suitable biocatalyst. Special attention has been paid to the role that the solvent plays in the production of ethyl cinnamate. Therefore, volatile organic solvents and deep eutectic mixtures were employed in order to find optimal reaction conditions. Once that hexane was selected as the solvent of choice, other parameters that affect the enzyme activity were investigated in order to produce ethyl cinnamate with excellent yield. The CAL-B loading, nucleophile equivalents, temperature and reaction time have been identified as key parameters in the enzyme efficiency, and the potential of lipase-catalysed esterification has been finally exploited to produce a series of ethyl esters with different pattern substitutions on the aromatic ring.

- Synthesis of new adamantyl-imine palladium(II) complexes and their application in Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura C[sbnd]C cross-coupling reactions
-
Improving carbon–carbon cross-coupling reactions is an ongoing process and finding the most versatile and stable catalyst precursors has been of great interest. Ligand design has been proven to be important since it is responsible for providing electron density and steric saturation around the metal centre, thus contributing towards the stereo-electronic properties. The adamantyl moiety has been used to generate highly bulky and electron-rich ligands for application in palladium-catalysed cross-coupling reactions. Accordingly, we have prepared some Schiff-base adamantyl ligands (L1-L3) and complexed them with [PdCl2(MeCN)2] to afford the (pre)catalysts C1-C3, which were successfully applied in Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura carbon–carbon cross-coupling reactions. The cross-coupling reaction products were obtained in good yields using 0.5 mol % Pd catalyst loading. C2 and C3 showed remarkable activity in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling reactions involving substrates with substituents on the olefin and aryl halide (including 4-Cl, 4-CH3, -CO2Me and -CO2Et). We also, observed that the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling system was active towards challenging activated and deactivated aryl chlorides, with to up 70% conversions recorded. The mercury poisoning tests conducted revealed that the catalysts act as homogenous molecular active species in the Mizoroki-Heck reactions and act as both homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions.

- Palladium Nanoparticles Anchored on Magnesium Organosilicate: An Effective and Selective Catalyst for the Heck Reaction
-
A new and effective palladium catalyst supported on a magnesium organosilicate for application in the Heck reaction is presented. A group of compounds comprising 22 examples were synthesized in moderate to high yields (up to 99%) within a short time. The palladium supported on magnesium organosilicate catalyst was characterized as an amorphous solid by SEM, containing around 33% of palladium inside the solid, and even with this low quantity of palladium, the catalyst was very efficient in the Heck reaction. Besides, based on the Scherrer equation, the crystallite size of the synthesized palladium nanoparticles was ultrasmall (around 1.3 nm). This strategy is a simple and efficient route for the formation of C-C bonds via the Heck cross-coupling reaction.

- Z-Selective phosphine promoted 1,4-reduction of ynoates and propynoic amides in the presence of water
-
Phosphine-mediated reductions of substituted propynoic esters and amides in the presence of water yield the partially reduced α,β-unsaturated esters and amides with highZ-selectivity. The competitivein situ ZtoE-isomerization of the product in some cases lowers theZtoEratios of the isolated α,β-unsaturated carbonyl products. Reaction time and the amounts of phosphine and water in the reaction mixture are the key experimental factors which control the selectivity by preventing or reducing the rates ofZ- toE-product isomerization. Close reaction monitoring enables isolation of theZ-alkenes with high selectivities. The computational results suggest that the reactions could be highlyZ-selective owing to the stereoselective formation of theE-P-hydroxyphosphorane intermediate.

-
The mesoporous silica nanosphere supported palladium nanocluster was synthesized through a simple impregnation method and well characterized. The as prepared catalyst shows excellent catalytic performance in tandem oxidation process (TOP) of alcohol and phosphorous ylide, which provides an efficient access to α,β-unsaturated esters with high yields utilizes 1 atmosphere of molecular oxygen as sole oxidant. This work represents the first example of atomically precise palladium nanocluster catalyzed tandem oxidation process of alcohol and phosphorous ylide and is expected to open new horizons for nanoclusters in the tandem reactions.

- Copper(I)-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of α-diazoesters
-
A practical Cu-catalyzed oxidation of α-diazoesters to α-ketoesters using molecular oxygen as an oxidant has been developed. Both electron-poor and electron-rich aryl α-diazoesters are suitable substrates and provide the α-ketoesters in good yields. In this oxidative system, α-diazo-β-ketoesters are also compatible as substrates but unexpectedly furnish α-ketoesters via C-C bond cleavage, rather than the vicinal tricarbonyl products.

Efficient catalytic arsa-Wittig reactions have been developed by using 1-phenylarsolane as a catalyst. A wide array of aldehydes was converted to the corresponding olefins in high yields with moderate to excellent E stereoselectivity in the presence of a catalytic amount of 1-phenylarsolane. Moreover, density functional theory calculations were carried out to afford insight into the E/Z selectivity.

- 1,3-Diphenyldisiloxane Enables Additive-Free Redox Recycling Reactions and Catalysis with Triphenylphosphine
-
The recently reported chemoselective reduction of phosphine oxides with 1,3-diphenyldisiloxane (DPDS) has opened up the possibility of additive-free phosphine oxide reductions in catalytic systems. Herein we disclose the use of this new reducing agent as an enabler of phosphorus redox recycling in Wittig, Staudinger, and alcohol substitution reactions. DPDS was successfully utilized in ambient-temperature additive-free redox recycling variants of the Wittig olefination, Appel halogenation, and Staudinger reduction. Triphenylphosphine-promoted catalytic recycling reactions were also facilitated by DPDS. Additive-free triphenylphosphine-promoted catalytic Staudinger reductions could even be performed at ambient temperature due to the rapid nature of phosphinimine reduction, for which we characterized kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. These results demonstrate the utility of DPDS as an excellent reducing agent for the development of phosphorus redox recycling reactions.

- Metal-free domino Cloke-Wilson rearrangement-hydration-dimerization of cyclopropane carbaldehydes: A facile access to oxybis(2-aryltetrahydrofuran) derivatives
-
In this work, we have demonstrated a metal-free transformation of cyclopropane carbaldehydes to oxybis(2-aryltetrahydrofuran) derivatives via a domino Cloke-Wilson rearrangement-hydration-dimerization sequence. Commercially inexpensive p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) was used as a Br?nsted acid catalyst, and reactions were conducted in an open-flask. Detection of reaction intermediates were carried to get an insight into the reaction pathway.

- Regioselective Br?nsted Acid-Catalyzed Annulation of Cyclopropane Aldehydes with N′-Aryl Anthranil Hydrazides: Domino Construction of Tetrahydropyrrolo[1,2- a]quinazolin-5(1 H)ones
-
A highly regioselective synthesis of tetrahydropyrrolo[1,2-a]quinazolin-5(1H)one derivatives was achieved by reacting cyclopropane aldehydes with N′-aryl anthranil hydrazides in the presence of p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA). The transformation involves domino imine formation and intramolecular cyclization to form 2-arylcyclopropyl-2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H)-one, followed by nucleophilic ring opening of the cyclopropyl ring to form desired tetrahydropyrrolo[1,2-a]quinazolin-5(1H)one in good to excellent yield with complete regioselectivity. This protocol tolerates a great variety of functional groups and thus provides a simple and step-efficient method for pyrroloquinazolinone synthesis.

- Photocatalyzed Diastereoselective Isomerization of Cinnamyl Chlorides to Cyclopropanes
-
Endergonic isomerizations are thermodynamically unfavored processes that are difficult to realize under thermal conditions. We report a photocatalytic and diastereoselective isomerization of acyclic cinnamyl chlorides to strained cyclopropanes. Quantum mechanical calculations (uM06-2X and DLPNO), including TD-DFT calculations, and experimental studies provide evidence for the energy transfer from an iridium photocatalyst to the allylic chloride substrate followed by C-Cl homolytic cleavage. Subsequent Cla¢ radical migration forms a localized triplet 1,3-diradical intermediate that, after intersystem crossing, undergoes ring-closing to form the desired product. The mild reaction conditions are compatible with a broad range of functional groups to generate chlorocyclopropanes in high yields and diastereoselectivities. A more efficient process is developed by addition of a catalytic amount of a nickel complex, and we propose a novel role for this cocatalyst to recycle an allyl chloride byproduct generated in the course of the reaction. The reaction is also shown to be stereoconvergent, as an E/Z mixture of cinnamyl chlorides furnish the anti-chlorocyclopropane product in high diastereoselectivity. We anticipate that the use of a visible light activated photocatalyst to transform substrates in combination with a transition metal catalyst to recycle byproducts back into the catalytic cycle will provide unique opportunities for the discovery of new reactivity.

- Accessing dihydro-1,2-oxazine via cloke-wilson-type annulation of cyclopropyl carbonyls: application toward the diastereoselective synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2- b][1,2]oxazine
-
A convenient additive-free synthesis of dihydro-4H-1,2-oxazines via a Cloke-Wilson-type ring expansion of the aryl-substituted cyclopropane carbaldehydes with the hydroxylamine salt is introduced. Comparatively less active cyclopropyl ketones also follow a similar protocol if supplemented by catalytic p-toluene sulfonic acid monohydrate. The transformation is performed in an open-to-air flask as it shows negligible sensitivity toward air/moisture. Dihydro-4H-1,2-oxazines when subjected to cycloaddition with the cyclopropane diester afford a trouble-free formulation of the valued hexahydro-2H-pyrrolo[1,2-b][1,2]oxazine derivatives. A cascade one-pot variant of this two-step strategy offers a comparable overall yield of the final product.

Enone substrates were activated efficiently for anti-head to head dimerizations with a high yield (up to 83%) and high selectivity. The adjustable excited state potential also allows donor-acceptor fluorophores to be used for isomerization of the above substrates, confirming the potential of donor-acceptor fluorophores as energy transfer photocatalysts.

- Coumaric acid analogues inhibit growth and melanin biosynthesis in Cryptococcus neoformans and potentialize amphotericin B antifungal activity
-
Fungal infections are on the rise, since the imunocompromised population is increasing due to AIDS/HIV, organ transplant and chemotherapy. Many environmental and pathogenic fungi are able to accomplish melanin biosynthesis as a virulence factor to promote host invasion. Melanized cells are more resistant to radiation, oxidative and osmotic stresses; also melanin confers an advantage in vivo, since melanized cells are more resistant to phagocytic engulfment and oxidative stress caused by the host defense cells and by some antifungal drugs, such as fluconazole (FCZ) and amphotericin B (AmB). Brown, red or black melanin pigments can be produced by the polyketide pathway (DHN-melanin) or from dihydroxyphenols, such as L-DOPA (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) and L-tyrosine by polyphenoloxidases. Among several pathogenic fungi, Cryptococcus neoformans is a melanized yeast that causes pneumonia and meningoencephalitis in immunocompromised patients. The knockout of the laccase genes or other interruptions on melanin biosynthetic pathway generates cryptococcal strains with attenuated virulence in an animal model. In this study 16 analogues of coumaric and cinnamic acid were evaluated as possible tyrosinase inhibitors. We have identified some valuable inhibitors of C. neoformans growth and melanin biosynthesis disruption agents. The results showed that coumaric acid derivatives (1a-c), the ketones (3a-b) and 2-allylphenol (7c) are significant inhibitors of tyrosinase and melanization of the fungus. Two analogues (1b and 3b) were selected as promising antimelanogenic agents to be combined with AmB, showing to promote 16-fold reduction in the AmB fungicidal concentration with no appreciable cytotoxicity to mammalian cells. The data suggest that inhibition of the melanin biosynthesis by these compounds may increase the susceptibility of the cells to the oxidative stress generated by AmB. In summary, our data show that C. neoformans can be a suitable model system to test novel inhibitors that target melanin biosynthesis, and novel compounds for adjunct therapy against C. neoformans were identified.

- Coumaric acid derivatives as tyrosinase inhibitors: Efficacy studies through in silico, in vitro and ex vivo approaches
-
p-Coumaric acid is a known inhibitor of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the initial steps of the melanin synthesis in human and other species. However, its low lipophilicity impairs its penetration through skin and efficacy as antimelanogenic agent indeed. Accordingly, this paper reports the assessment of several coumaric acid derivatives as tyrosinase inhibitors and antimelanogenic agents in in vitro, in silico and ex vivo assays. The compounds were designed with modifications in the aromatic and acid moieties of p-coumaric acid, being the coumarate esters the most promising derivatives. The compounds showed higher tyrosinase inhibitory activity (pIC50 3.7–4.2) than the parent acid, being compounds 1d, 1e and 1f the most potent inhibitors. Docking analysis showed that these esters are competitive inhibitors per se, and act independently of a redox mechanism as suggested by DPPH assays. Moreover, the esters showed efficacy in reducing the melanin deposition in human skin fragments at 0.1% concentration, especially compound 1e. In summary, there is an important equilibria between tyrosinase affinity and lipophilicity that must be considered to get effective antimelanogenic agents with adequate permeability in the skin.

- Catalytic and antibacterial properties of 3-dentate carboxamide Pd/Pt complexes obtained via a benign route
-
The complexes PdII(qcq)(OAc) and PtII(qcq)Cl have been synthesized using environmentally benign synthesized ligands and characterized by elemental analyses: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The catalytic activity of the complex was assessed, in different media, for the Mizoroki–Heck coupling reaction for typical aryl halides and terminal olefins under aerobic conditions. Since the base and the solvent were found to influence the efficiency of the reaction, reaction conditions, temperature, time, and the amount of K3PO4 and a mixture of H2O/PEG, were optimized. We found, for the Mizoroki–Heck reaction coupling less reactive aryl chloride derivatives with olefins, promising activity for palladium catalysts. The electrochemical behavior of Hqcq and the Pd(II) complex was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and irreversible PdII/I reductions were observed. Hqcq and the Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes were also screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity. They showed promising antibacterial activity comparable to that of the antibiotic penicillin.

- A hydrophilic heterogeneous cobalt catalyst for fluoride-free Hiyama, Suzuki, Heck and Hirao cross-coupling reactions in water
-
A hydrophilic heterogeneous cobalt catalyst of chitosan, denoted as mTEG-CS-Co-Schiff-base, has been successfully prepared. This newly synthesized catalyst was characterized by different methods such as XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, TGA, FT-IR, 13C{1H} CP/MAS NMR, XPS and ICP analyses. The catalyst displayed excellent activity for the palladium and fluoride-free Hiyama, Suzuki, Heck and Hirao reactions of various aryl iodides, bromides and chlorides (i.e., the most challenging aryl halides which are cheaper and more widely available than aryl iodides and bromides) in water. The presence of triethylene glycol tags with hydrophilic character on the Co-complex supported on chitosan provides dispersion of the catalyst particles in water, which leads to higher catalytic performance and also facile catalyst recovery by successive extraction. It was reused for at least six successive runs without any discernible decrease in its catalytic activity or any remarkable changes in catalyst structure. The use of water as a green solvent, without requiring any additive or organic solvent, as well as use of a low cost and abundant cobalt catalyst instead of expensive Pd catalysts along with the catalyst recovery and scalability, make this method favorable from environmental and economic points of view for the C-C and C(sp2)-P coupling reactions. Notably, this is the first report on the application of a cobalt catalyst in Hiyama reactions.

- Amidoxime modified PAN supported palladium complex: A greener and efficient heterogeneous catalyst for heck reaction
-
Development of a facile and greener approach for Heck reaction using a modified PAN supported palladium catalyst is described. The preparation of the catalyst involves a simple process through amidoxime modification of nitrile group in Polyacrylonitrile (PAN), followed by the complexation with Palladium chloride (PdCl2). The resulting supported catalyst was characterized by spectroscopic analyses and further by computational studies. This polymer supported Palladium complex displayed excellent catalytic activity in Heck coupling reaction of a series of activated alkenes and aryl halides and afforded the corresponding coupling products upto 96% isolated yield. After the reaction, the catalyst was easily recovered by simple filtration and recycled with excellent stability and activity even after 5 runs. This is the first report on the use of amidoxime functionalized PAN- Palladium (II) complex as a heterogeneous catalyst in Heck coupling reaction.

- Synthesis and Immobilization of Metal Nanoparticles Using Photoactive Polymer-Decorated Zeolite L Crystals and Their Application in Catalysis
-
A facile route to generate Au and Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on zeolite L crystals decorated with photoactive polymer brushes is described. The polymers used in this approach serve a dual role: Upon irradiation with UV light, they release highly reducing ketyl radicals in a Norrish-Type-I reaction. These radicals serve as one electron donors to reduce metal salts to the corresponding metal NPs. At the same time the polymer shell stabilizes the in situ generated metal NPs. It is shown that the zeolite-polymer-NP composites can be used as recyclable catalysts for the oxidation of benzylic alcohols to aldehydes and the stereoselective semihydrogenation of alkynes to Z-alkenes. The polymer shell in these hybrid catalysts protects the NPs from aggregation and also alters their catalytic properties. (Figure presented.).

- Simpler and Cleaner Synthesis of Variously Capped Cobalt Nanocrystals Applied in the Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

Unlike the classical organometallic approach, we report here a synthetic pathway requiring no reducing sources or heating to produce homogeneous hexagonal-close-packed cobalt nanocrystals (Co NCs). Involving a disproportionation process, this simple and fast (6 min) synthesis is performed at room temperature in the presence of ecofriendly fatty alcohols to passivate Co NCs. Through a recycling step, the yield of Co NCs is improved and the waste generation is limited, making this synthetic route cleaner. After an easy exchange of the capping ligands, we applied them as unsupported catalysts in the stereoselective semihydrogenation of alkynes.

- An Annelated Mesoionic Carbene (MIC) Based Ru(II) Catalyst for Chemo- And Stereoselective Semihydrogenation of Internal and Terminal Alkynes
-
The catalytic utility of [RuL1(CO)2I2] (1), containing an annelated π-conjugated imidazo-naphthyridine-based mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligand (L1), is evaluated for E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation. The precatalyst 1, in combination with 2 equiv of AgBArF, semihydrogenates a broad range of internal alkynes with molecular hydrogen (5 bar) in water. (E)-Alkenes are accessed in high yields, and a number of reducible functional groups are tolerated. A chelate MIC ligand and two cis carbonyls provide a well-defined platform at the Ru center for hydrogenation and isomerization. The loss of two iodides and the presence of two carbonyls render the Ru center electron deficient and thus the formation of metal vinylidenes with terminal alkynes is avoided. This is leveraged for the semihydrogenation of terminal alkynes by the same catalytic system in isopropyl alcohol. Reaction profile, isomerization, kinetic, and DFT studies reveal initial alkyne hydrogenation to a (Z)-alkene, which further isomerizes to an (E)-alkene via metal-catalyzed Z → E isomerization.

-
The new ferromagnetic nanostructured FMMWCNTs@CPA@SMTU@PdII NPs (IV) as an eco-friendly heterogeneous nanocatalyst with a particle size of ~20-30 nm reported earlier by our group has been found to be very effective for Suzuki-Miyaura and Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions at ambient temperature. The procedure has been applied for a wide range of aryl halides, arylboronic acids, and alkenes. The magnetic separation by an external magnetic field, mild reaction conditions, and catalyst reusability up to four times without significant decrease in catalytic activity (reduced catalytic activity from 11 to 18 % in the fifth, sixth, and seventh cycles) made the present method sustainable and economically viable for C-C cross-coupling reactions.

- Palladium(ii) ligated with a selenated (Se, CNHC, N-)-type pincer ligand: An efficient catalyst for Mizoroki-Heck and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling in water
-
A new 1-[N-benzylacetamido]-3-[1-(2-phenylselenylethyl)]benzimidazolium chloride (L), the precursor of a novel (Se, CNHC, N-)-type pincer ligand (L) was synthesised in high yield through a sequence of consecutive reactions of 1H-benzimidazole with ethylene dichloride, sodium selenophenolate, and N-benzyl-2-chloroacetamide. The palladium-promoted reaction of L with PdCl2 resulted in a moisture- and air-insensitive complex [Pd(L-H2Cl)Cl] (1), which demonstrated outstanding catalytic potential for Mizoroki-Heck coupling of aromatic bromides and chlorides (with yields up to 94% and 70%, respectively) at very low catalyst loading (0.2 mol%) and under mild reaction conditions in water. The complex (1) was also investigated for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and found to be selectively efficient (yields up to 94%) for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aromatic bromides at 0.01 mol% of 1 in water. All coupling reactions were carried out in the green and economical solvent, water, which is highly desirable for bulk synthesis of complex molecules in industry. During the catalytic process, complex 1 converted into PdSe nanoparticles (NPs, size range 5-6 nm) in situ. The morphology and composition of these NPs were analysed through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively. The core-level, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of stable Pd0 and Pd2+ oxidation states in these PdSe NPs. Based on further experimental investigations, these nanoparticles were found to work as a stock of true catalytic species. The hot filtration test, as well as the two-phase test, confirmed the largely homogeneous nature of the catalytic process, which probably proceeds by leaching of solution-phase Pd species from these NPs.

- 4-Methyltetrahydropyran (4-MeTHP): Application as an Organic Reaction Solvent
-
4-Methyltetrahydropyran (4-MeTHP) is a hydrophobic cyclic ether with potential for industrial applications. We herein report, for the first time, a comprehensive study on the performance of 4-MeTHP as an organic reaction solvent. Its broad application to organic reactions includes radical, Grignard, Wittig, organometallic, halogen-metal exchange, reduction, oxidation, epoxidation, amidation, esterification, metathesis, and other miscellaneous organic reactions. This breadth suggests 4-MeTHP can serve as a substitute for conventional ethers and harmful halogenated solvents. However, 4-MeTHP was found incompatible with strong Lewis acids, and the C?O bond was readily cleaved by treatment with BBr3. Moreover, the radical-based degradation pathways of 4-MeTHP, THP and 2-MeTHF were elucidated on the basis of GC-MS analyses. The data reported herein is anticipated to be useful for a broad range of synthetic chemists, especially industrial process chemists, when selecting the reaction solvent with green chemistry perspectives.
