Enantioselective Synthesis of Chiral Carboxylic Acids from Alkynes and Formic Acid by Nickel-Catalyzed Cascade Reactions: Facile Synthesis of Profens
We report a stereoselective conversion of terminal alkynes to α-chiral carboxylic acids using a nickel-catalyzed domino hydrocarboxylation-transfer hydrogenation reaction. A simple nickel/BenzP* catalyst displayed high activity in both steps of regioselective hydrocarboxylation of alkynes and subsequent asymmetric transfer hydrogenation. The reaction was successfully applied in enantioselective preparation of three nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory profens (>90 % ees) and the chiral fragment of AZD2716.

Reshaping the active pocket of esterase Est816 for resolution of economically important racemates
Bacterial esterases are potential biocatalysts for the production of optically pure compounds. However, the substrate promiscuity and chiral selectivity of esterases usually have a negative correlation, which limits their commercial value. Herein, an efficient and versatile esterase (Est816) was identified as a promising catalyst for the hydrolysis of a wide range of economically important substrates with low enantioselectivity. We rationally designed several variants with up to 11-fold increased catalytic efficiency towards ethyl 2-arylpropionates, mostly retaining the initial substrate scope and enantioselectivity. These variants provided a dramatic increase in efficiency for biocatalytic applications. Based on the best variant Est816-M1, several variants with higher or inverted enantioselectivity were designed through careful analysis of the structural information and molecular docking. Two stereoselectively complementary mutants, Est816-M3 and Est816-M4, successfully overcame and even reversed the low enantioselectivity, and several 2-arylpropionic acid derivatives with highEvalues were obtained. Our results offer potential industrial biocatalysts for the preparation of structurally diverse chiral carboxylic acids and further lay the foundation for improving the catalytic efficiency and enantioselectivity of esterases.

Palladium-Catalyzed Distal m-C-H Functionalization of Arylacetic Acid Derivatives
Herein, we present m-C-H olefination on derivatives of phenylacetic acids by tethering with a simple nitrile-based template through palladium catalysis. Notably, the versatility of the method is evaluated with a wide range of phenylacetic acid derivatives for obtaining the meta-olefination products in fair to excellent yields with outstanding selectivities under mild conditions. Significantly, the present strategy is successfully exemplified for the synthesis of drugs/natural product analogues (naproxen, ibuprofen, paracetamol, and cholesterol).

Suppressing carboxylate nucleophilicity with inorganic salts enables selective electrocarboxylation without sacrificial anodes
Although electrocarboxylation reactions use CO2as a renewable synthon and can incorporate renewable electricity as a driving force, the overall sustainability and practicality of this process is limited by the use of sacrificial anodes such as magnesium and aluminum. Replacing these anodes for the carboxylation of organic halides is not trivial because the cations produced from their oxidation inhibit a variety of undesired nucleophilic reactions that form esters, carbonates, and alcohols. Herein, a strategy to maintain selectivity without a sacrificial anode is developed by adding a salt with an inorganic cation that blocks nucleophilic reactions. Using anhydrous MgBr2as a low-cost, soluble source of Mg2+cations, carboxylation of a variety of aliphatic, benzylic, and aromatic halides was achieved with moderate to good (34-78%) yields without a sacrificial anode. Moreover, the yields from the sacrificial-anode-free process were often comparable or better than those from a traditional sacrificial-anode process. Examining a wide variety of substrates shows a correlation between known nucleophilic susceptibilities of carbon-halide bonds and selectivity loss in the absence of a Mg2+source. The carboxylate anion product was also discovered to mitigate cathodic passivation by insoluble carbonates produced as byproducts from concomitant CO2reduction to CO, although this protection can eventually become insufficient when sacrificial anodes are used. These results are a key step toward sustainable and practical carboxylation by providing an electrolyte design guideline to obviate the need for sacrificial anodes.

Desulfonylative Electrocarboxylation with Carbon Dioxide
Electrocarboxylation of organic halides is one of the most investigated electrochemical approaches for converting thermodynamically inert carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added carboxylic acids. By converting organic halides into their sulfone derivatives, we have developed a highly efficient electrochemical desulfonylative carboxylation protocol. Such a strategy takes advantage of CO2as the abundant C1 building block for the facile preparation of multifunctionalized carboxylic acids, including the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen, under mild reaction conditions.

Coupling of Reformatsky Reagents with Aryl Chlorides Enabled by Ylide-Functionalized Phosphine Ligands
The coupling of aryl chlorides with Reformatsky reagents is a desirable strategy for the construction of α-aryl esters but has so far been substantially limited in the substrate scope due to many challenges posed by various possible side reactions. This limitation has now been overcome by the tailoring of ylide-functionalized phosphines to fit the requirements of Negishi couplings. Record-setting activities were achieved in palladium-catalyzed arylations of organozinc reagents with aryl electrophiles using a cyclohexyl-YPhos ligand bearing an ortho-tolyl-substituent in the backbone. This highly electron-rich, bulky ligand enables the use of aryl chlorides in room temperature couplings of Reformatsky reagents. The reaction scope covers diversely functionalized arylacetic and arylpropionic acid derivatives. Aryl bromides and chlorides can be converted selectively over triflate electrophiles, which permits consecutive coupling strategies.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Deprotection of Allyl Carboxylic Esters Induced by Hydrogen Atom Transfer
A brief, efficient method has been developed for the removal of the allyl protecting group from allyl carboxylic esters using a Co(II)/TBHP/(Me2SiH)2O catalytic system. This facile strategy displays excellent chemoselectivity, functional group tolerance, and high yields. This transformation probably occurs through the hydrogen atom transfer process, and a Co(III)-six-membered cyclic intermediate is recommended.

2,2′-Bipyridine-α,α′-trifluoromethyl-diol ligand: Synthesis and application in the asymmetric Et2Zn alkylation of aldehydes
A chiral 2,2′-bipyridine ligand (1) bearing α,α′-trifluoromethyl-alcohols at 6,6′-positions was designed in five steps affording either the R,R or S,S enantiomer with excellent stereoselectivities, i.e. 97% de, >99% ee and >99.5% de, >99.5% ee, respectively. The key step for reaching high levels of stereoselectivity was demonstrated to be the resolution of the α-CF3-alcohol using (S)-ibuprofen as the resolving agent. An initial application for the 2,2′-bipyridine-α,α′-CF3-diol ligand was highlighted in the ZnII-catalyzed asymmetric ethylation reaction of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic aldehydes. Synergistic electron deficiency and steric hindrance properties of the newly developed ligand afforded the corresponding alcohols in good to excellent yields (up to 99%) and enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee). As observed from single crystal diffraction analysis, the complexation of the 2,2′-bipyridine-α,α′-CF3-diol ligand generates an unusual hexacoordinated ZnII.

Asymmetric Markovnikov Hydroaminocarbonylation of Alkenes Enabled by Palladium-Monodentate Phosphoramidite Catalysis
A palladium-catalyzed asymmetric Markovnikov hydroaminocarbonylation of alkenes with anilines has been developed for the atom-economical synthesis of 2-substituted propanamides bearing an α-stereocenter. A novel phosphoramidite ligand L16 was discovered which exhibited very high reactivity and selectivity in the reaction. This asymmetric Markovnikov hydroaminocarbonylation employs readily available starting materials and tolerates a wide range of functional groups, thus providing a facile and straightforward method for the regio- and enantioselective synthesis of 2-substituted propanamides under ambient conditions. Mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction proceeds through a palladium hydride pathway.

Homochiral Dodecanuclear Lanthanide "cage in Cage" for Enantioselective Separation
It is extremely difficult to anticipate the structure and the stereochemistry of a complex, particularly when the ligand is flexible and the metal node adopts diverse coordination numbers. When trivalent lanthanides (LnIII) and enantiopure amino acid ligands are utilized as building blocks, self-assembly sometimes yields rare chiral polynuclear structures. In this study, an enantiopure carboxyl-functionalized amino acid-based ligand with C3 symmetry reacts with lanthanum cations to give a homochiral porous coordination cage, (Δ/λ)12-PCC-57. The dodecanuclear lanthanide cage has an unprecedented octahedral "cage-in-cage"framework. During the self-assembly, the chirality is transferred from the enantiopure ligand and fixed by the binuclear lanthanide cluster to give 12 metal centers that have either Δor λ homochiral stereochemistry. The cage exhibits excellent enantioselective separation of racemic alcohols, 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones, and multiple commercially available drugs. This finding exhibits a rare example of a multinuclear lanthanide complex with a dual-walled topology and homochirality. The highly ordered self-assembly and self-sorting of flexible amino acids and lanthanides shed light on the chiral transformation between different complicated artificial systems that mimic natural enzymes.

Palladium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Markovnikov Hydroxycarbonylation and Hydroalkoxycarbonylation of Vinyl Arenes: Synthesis of 2-Arylpropanoic Acids
Asymmetric hydroxycarbonylation is one of the most fundamental yet challenging methods for the synthesis of carboxylic acids. Herein, we reported the development of a palladium-catalyzed highly enantioselective Markovnikov hydroxycarbonylation of vinyl arenes with CO and water. A monodentate phosphoramidite ligand L6 plays vital role in the reaction. The reaction tolerates a range of functional groups, and provides a facile and atom-economical approach to an array of 2-arylpropanoic acids including several commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The catalytic system has also enabled an asymmetric Markovnikov hydroalkoxycarbonylation of vinyl arenes with alcohols to afford 2-arylpropanates. Mechanistic investigations suggested that the hydropalladation is irreversible and is the regio- and enantiodetermining step, while hydrolysis/alcoholysis is probably the rate-limiting step.

Nickel-Catalyzed Cyanation of Aryl Halides and Hydrocyanation of Alkynes via C-CN Bond Cleavage and Cyano Transfer
We report nickel-catalyzed cyanation and hydrocyanation methods to prepare aryl nitriles and vinyl nitriles from aryl halides and alkynes, respectively. Using inexpensive and nontoxic 4-cyanopyridine N-oxide as the cyano shuttle, the methods provide an efficient approach to prepare aryl cyanides and vinyl nitriles under mild and operationally simple reaction conditions with a broad range of functional group tolerances. In hydrocyanation of alkynes, the method demonstrated good regioselectivity, producing predominantly E- or Z-alkenyl nitriles in a controlled manner and exclusively Markovnikov vinyl nitriles when internal diaryl alkynes and terminal alkynes were applied as the substrates, respectively. The preliminary mechanistic investigation indicated that the C-CN bond cleavage process is promoted by oxidative addition to the nickel(I) complex in the cyanation of aryl halides, and further studies via a series of deuterium exchange experiments indicated that water serves as the hydrogen source for the hydrocyanation of alkynes.

Mechanistic Investigation of the Nickel-Catalyzed Carbonylation of Alcohols
The carbonylation of alcohols represents a straightforward and atom-efficient methodology for the preparation of carboxylic acids. It is desirable to perform these reactions under precious metal-free and low-pressure conditions, with regioselectivity control. In this work, we present a detailed mechanistic study of a catalytic system based on NiI2, which can carbonylate benzylic alcohols in a highly regioselective manner to the corresponding branched carboxylic acids, core motifs for nonsteroidal drugs. The combination of catalytic amounts of nickel and iodide is crucial for efficient catalytic and regioselective conversion. Quantum-chemical computations were used to evaluate the underlying mechanistic processes. They revealed that a combination of two mechanisms is responsible for the observed reactivity and that the oxidative addition of alkyl halides to the Ni(0) species follows a radical oxidation pathway via two one-electron steps.

Oxidation of Alkynyl Boronates to Carboxylic Acids, Esters, and Amides
A general efficient protocol was developed for the synthesis of carboxylic acids, esters, and amides through oxidation of alkynyl boronates, generated directly from terminal alkynes. This protocol represents the first example of C(sp)?B bond oxidation. This approach displays a broad substrate scope, including aryl and alkyl alkynes, and exhibits excellent functional group tolerance. Water, primary and secondary alcohols, and amines are suitable nucleophiles for this transformation. Notably, amino acids and peptides can be used as nucleophiles, providing an efficient method for the synthesis and modification of peptides. The practicability of this methodology was further highlighted by the preparation of pharmaceutical molecules.

Deoxygenative α-alkylation and α-arylation of 1,2-dicarbonyls

Homochiral Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enantioselective Separations in Liquid Chromatography
Selective separation of enantiomers is a substantial challenge for the pharmaceutical industry. Chromatography on chiral stationary phases is the standard method, but at a very high cost for industrial-scale purification due to the high cost of the chiral stationary phases. Typically, these materials are poorly robust, expensive to manufacture, and often too specific for a single desired substrate, lacking desirable versatility across different chiral analytes. Here, we disclose a porous, robust homochiral metal-organic framework (MOF), TAMOF-1, built from copper(II) and an affordable linker prepared from natural l-histidine. TAMOF-1 has shown to be able to separate a variety of model racemic mixtures, including drugs, in a wide range of solvents of different polarity, outperforming several commercial chiral columns for HPLC separations. Although not exploited in the present article, it is worthy to mention that the preparation of this new material is scalable to the multikilogram scale, opening unprecedented possibilities for low-energy chiral separation at the industrial scale.

In order to use the enantioseparation capability of cationic cyclodextrin and to combine the advantages of capillary electrochromatography (CEC) with open-tubular (OT) column, in this study, a new OT-CEC, coated with cationic cyclodextrin (1-allylimidazolium-β-cyclodextrin [AI-β-CD]) as chiral stationary phase (CSP), was prepared and applied for enantioseparation. Synthesized AI-β-CD was characterized by infrared (IR) spectrometry and mass spectrometry (MS). The preparation conditions for the AI-β-CD-coated column were optimized with the orthogonal experiment design L9(34). The column prepared was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental analysis (EA). The results showed that the thickness of stationary phase in the inner surface of the AI-β-CD-coated columns was about 0.2 to 0.5?μm. The AI-β-CD content in stationary phase based on the EA was approximately 2.77?mmol·m?2. The AI-β-CD-coated columns could separate all 14 chiral compounds (histidine, lysine, arginine, glutamate, aspartic acid, cysteine, serine, valine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, salbutamol, atenolol, ibuprofen, and napropamide) successfully in the study and exhibit excellent reproducibility and stability. We propose that the column, coated with AI-β-CD, has a great potential for enantioseparation in OT-CEC.

Colistin sulfate chiral stationary phase for the enantioselective separation of pharmaceuticals using organic polymer monolithic capillary chromatography ?
A new functionalized polymer monolithic capillary with a macrocyclic antibiotic, namely colistin sulfate, as chiral selector was prepared via the copolymerization of binary monomer mixtures consisting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) in porogenic solvents namely 1-propanol and 1,4-butanediol, in the presence of azobisiso-butyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator and colistin sulfate. The prepared capillaries were investigated for the enantioselective nano-LC separation of a group of racemic pharmaceuticals, namely, α- and β-blockers, anti-inflammatory drugs, antifungal drugs, norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors, catecholamines, sedative hypnotics, antihistaminics, anticancer drugs, and antiarrhythmic drugs. Acceptable separation was achieved for many drugs using reversed phase chromatographic conditions with no separation achieved under normal phase conditions. Colistin sulfate appears to be useful addition to the available macrocyclic antibiotic chiral phases used in liquid chromatography.

From p-Xylene to Ibuprofen in Flow: Three-Step Synthesis by a Unified Sequence of Chemoselective C?H Metalations
Ibuprofen was prepared from an inactive and inexpensive p-xylene by three-step flow functionalizations through chemoselective metalations of benzyl positions in sequence using an in situ generated LICKOR-type superbase. The flow approach in the microreactor facilitated the comprehensive exploration of over 100 conditions in the first-step reaction by varying concentrations, temperatures, solvents, and equivalents of reagents, enabling optimal conditions to be found with 95 % yield by significantly suppressing the formation of byproducts, followed by the second C?H metalation step in 95 % yield. Moreover, gram-scale synthesis of ibuprofen in the final step was achieved by biphasic flow reaction of solution-phase intermediate with CO2, isolating 2.3 g for 10 min of operation time.

Palladium-Catalyzed α-Arylation of Carboxylic Acids and Secondary Amides via a Traceless Protecting Strategy
A novel traceless protecting strategy is presented for the long-standing challenge of conducting the palladium-catalyzed α-arylation of carboxylic aids and secondary amides with aryl halides. Both of the presented coupling processes occur with a variety of carboxylic acids and amides and with a variety of aryl bromides containing a broad range of functional groups, including base-sensitive functionality like acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, cyano, and even hydroxyl groups. Five commercial drugs were prepared through this method in one step in 81-96% yield. Gram-scale synthesis of medication Naproxen and Flurbiprofen with low palladium loading further highlights the practical value of this method.

Photocarboxylation of Benzylic C-H Bonds
The carboxylation of sp3-hybridized C-H bonds with CO2 is a challenging transformation. Herein, we report a visible-light-mediated carboxylation of benzylic C-H bonds with CO2 into 2-arylpropionic acids under metal-free conditions. Photo-oxidized triisopropylsilanethiol was used as the hydrogen atom transfer catalyst to afford a benzylic radical that accepts an electron from the reduced form of 2,3,4,6-tetra(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-5-(1-phenylethyl)benzonitrile generated in situ. The resulting benzylic carbanion reacts with CO2 to generate the corresponding carboxylic acid after protonation. The reaction proceeded without the addition of any sacrificial electron donor, electron acceptor or stoichiometric additives. Moderate to good yields of the desired products were obtained in a broad substrate scope. Several drugs were successfully synthesized using the novel strategy.

A Chemoselective α-Oxytriflation Enables the Direct Asymmetric Arylation of Amides
Until recently, the direct oxidative oxysulfonylation of carbonyl compounds was limited to ketones. Here, we report the first direct oxytriflation of simple, non-activated amides. Amide umpolung with triflic anhydride and pyridine-N-oxide in the absence of external nucleophiles directly leads to the formation of reactive α-triflates in a single step, which provides a platform for the deployment of valuable downstream α-functionalization reactions. The utility of this method was demonstrated by in situ clean conversion to their corresponding bromides, as desirable starting materials for nickel-catalyzed deracemizing enantioselective arylation. This approach not only enables a telescoped asymmetric arylation of unsubstituted amides but also extends its scope because of the broad chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance of the method. Amides bearing a functional group in α-position are found in many natural products and drugs. The direct α-functionalization of amides is one of the most popular approaches to access these moieties. Classically, the α-functionalization of amides has been dominated by enolate chemistry; however, carboxamides are among the least C-H acidic carbonyl derivatives, and the presence of further carbonyl or carboxyl groups (such as esters and ketones) is therefore not usually tolerated. Iron-catalysed enantioselective Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of racemic alkyl bromides
The first iron-catalysed enantioselective Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction has been developed. In the presence of catalytic amounts of FeCl2 and (R,R)-QuinoxP?, lithium arylborates are cross-coupled with tert-butyl α-bromopropionate in an enantioconvergent manner, enabling facile access to various optically active α-arylpropionic acids including several nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) of commercial importance. Asymmetric Hydrocyanation of Alkenes without HCN
A general and efficient rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric cyanide-free hydrocyanation of alkenes has been developed. Based on the asymmetric hydroformylation/condensation/aza-Cope elimination sequences, a broad scope of substrates including mono-substituted, 1,2-, and 1,1-disubstituted alkenes (involving natural product R- and S-limonene) were employed, and a series of valuable chiral nitriles are prepared with high yields (up to 95 %) and enantioselectivities (up to 98 % ee). Nickel-catalyzed Enantioselective Hydroarylation and Hydroalkenylation of Styrenes

Palladium-Catalyzed Enantioselective Thiocarbonylation of Styrenes
A highly enantioselective thiocarbonylation of styrenes with CO and thiols has been achieved by Pd catalysis, providing highly enantioenriched thioesters in good to excellent yields. Key to the successful execution of this reaction is the use of a chiral sulfoxide-(P-dialkyl)-phosphine (SOP) ligands. This thiocarbonylation proceeds smoothly under mild reaction conditions (1 atm CO and 0 °C) and displays broad substrate scope. Also demonstrated is that this transformation can be conducted using surrogates of CO, greatly increasing the safety aspects of running the reaction. The generality and utility of the method is manifested by its application to the synthetic transformations of thioester products and the direct acylation of cysteine-containing dipeptides. Resolution of (R,S)-ibuprofen catalyzed by immobilized Novozym40086 in organic phase
The enantioselective esterification of ibuprofen catalyzed by Novozym40086 was successfully conducted in organic solvent. Removing-water reagent was added into the reaction mixture to remove water produced in the esterification. The effects of temperature, n-hexanol concentration, ibuprofen concentration, and loading of enzymes were investigated. Under the condition of equilibrium, the thermodynamic equilibrium constant (K) of 7.697 and enantioselectivity (E) of 8.512 were obtained. The esterification reaction achieved its equilibrium in approximately 30?hours with conversion of 56% and eeS of 93.78%. The predicted values of X and eeS were 67.90% and 95.60%, respectively. The experimental value is approximately equal to the theoretical value, which indicates the feasibility of ideal models.

Palladium-Catalyzed Regioselective Aerobic Allylic C?H Oxygenation: Direct Synthesis of α,β-Unsaturated Aldehydes and Allylic Alcohols
A protocol for the synthesis of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and allylic alcohols from simple allylic hydrocarbons with water via palladium-catalyzed functionalization of allylic C?H bonds was described. Molecular oxygen is utilized as the sole oxidant in this oxygenation of terminal alkenes. Cellulose type chiral stationary phase based on reduced graphene oxide@silica gel for the enantiomer separation of chiral compounds
The graphene oxide (GO) was covalently coupled to the surfaces of silica gel (SiO2) microspheres by amide bond to get the graphene oxide@silica gel (GO@SiO2). Then, the GO@SiO2 was reduced with hydrazine to the reduced graphene oxide@silica gel (rGO@SiO2), and the cellulose derivatives were physically coated on the surfaces of rGO@SiO2 to prepare a chiral stationary phase (CSP) for high performance liquid chromatography. Under the optimum experimental conditions, eight benzene-enriched enantiomers were separated completely, and the resolution of trans-stilbene oxide perfectly reached 4.83. Compared with the blank column of non-bonded rGO, the separation performance is better on the new CSP, which is due to the existence of rGO to produce special retention interaction with analytes, such as π-π stacking, hydrophobic effect, π-π electron-donor–acceptor interaction, and hydrogen bonding. Therefore, the obtained CSP shows special selectivity for benzene-enriched enantiomers, improves separation selectivity and efficiency, and rGO plays a synergistic effect with cellulose derivatives on enantioseparation.

Evaluation of the Edman degradation product of vancomycin bonded to core-shell particles as a new HPLC chiral stationary phase
A modified macrocyclic glycopeptide-based chiral stationary phase (CSP), prepared via Edman degradation of vancomycin, was evaluated as a chiral selector for the first time. Its applicability was compared with other macrocyclic glycopeptide-based CSPs: TeicoShell and VancoShell. In addition, another modified macrocyclic glycopeptide-based CSP, NicoShell, was further examined. Initial evaluation was focused on the complementary behavior with these glycopeptides. A screening procedure was used based on previous work for the enantiomeric separation of 50 chiral compounds including amino acids, pesticides, stimulants, and a variety of pharmaceuticals. Fast and efficient chiral separations resulted by using superficially porous (core-shell) particle supports. Overall, the vancomycin Edman degradation product (EDP) resembled TeicoShell with high enantioselectivity for acidic compounds in the polar ionic mode. The simultaneous enantiomeric separation of 5 racemic profens using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry with EDP was performed in approximately 3?minutes. Other highlights include simultaneous liquid chromatography separations of rac-amphetamine and rac-methamphetamine with VancoShell, rac-pseudoephedrine and rac-ephedrine with NicoShell, and rac-dichlorprop and rac-haloxyfop with TeicoShell.

Visible-Light-Driven External-Reductant-Free Cross-Electrophile Couplings of Tetraalkyl Ammonium Salts
Cross-electrophile couplings between two electrophiles are powerful and economic methods to generate C-C bonds in the presence of stoichiometric external reductants. Herein, we report a novel strategy to realize the first external-reductant-free cross-electrophile coupling via visible-light photoredox catalysis. A variety of tetraalkyl ammonium salts, bearing primary, secondary, and tertiary C-N bonds, undergo selective couplings with aldehydes/ketone and CO2. Notably, the in situ generated byproduct, trimethylamine, is efficiently utilized as the electron donor. Moreover, this protocol exhibits mild reaction conditions, low catalyst loading, broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and facile scalability. Mechanistic studies indicate that benzyl radicals and anions might be generated as the key intermediates via photocatalysis, providing a new direction for cross-electrophile couplings.

Ligand-Controlled Regioselective Hydrocarboxylation of Styrenes with CO2 by Combining Visible Light and Nickel Catalysis
The ligand-controlled Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov hydrocarboxylation of styrenes with atmospheric pressure of CO2 at room temperature using dual visible-light-nickel catalysis has been developed. In the presence of neocuproine as ligand, the Markovnikov product is obtained exclusively, while employing 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (dppb) as the ligand favors the formation of the anti-Markovnikov product. A range of functional groups and electron-poor, -neutral, as well as electron-rich styrene derivatives are tolerated by the reaction, providing the desired products in moderate to good yields. Preliminary mechanistic investigations indicate the generation of a nickel hydride (H-NiII) intermediate, which subsequently adds irreversibly to styrenes.
