A series of complexes HgX2(H4pymtH)2 (X = Cl-, Br- I-, SCN-, CN- ; H4pymtH = 3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-2-thione) has been obtained by the reaction of H4pymtH with mercury(II) halides and pseudohalides in the molar ratio 2:1. X-ray diffraction studies revealed tetrahedral coordination of mercury with S-bound H4pymtH. The exception is Hg(CN)2(H4pymtH)2 where the coordination is 2 + 2 with two strongly bound CN- ligands and weaker H-S bonds with H4pymtH. One- and two-dimensional 1H and 13C NMR measurements in dimethylsulfoxide solution confirmed the complexation of mercury to sulfur. The greatest complexation effects on chemical shifts were detected for the C-2, C-5 and H-1,3 atoms, i.e. two, four and five bonds away from mercury atom. The complexation effects in Hg(SCN)2(H4pymtH)2 and Hg(CN)2(H4pymtH)2 are in agreement with the strongest intramolecular H-bonding in the former and the weakest Hg-S bonds in the latter as compared to other complexes here. A unique HgII coordination polymer has been synthesized through the reaction of 2,4,6-tris(2-pyrimidyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPymT) with a stoichiometric mixture of HgCl2 and NH4NCS, thus leading to the formation of a 1D polymeric heteroleptic hybrid material[{Hg(NCS)2}2TPymT]n (1). Two coordination pockets of TPymT in 1 are each coordinated to two HgII cations in an unprecedented 2,2′-bipyridine-like mode.

- Mercury(II) complexes with heterocyclic thiones - Preparation and characterization of the 1:1 and 1:2 mercury(II) complexes with benzo-1,3-imidazole-2-thione

A series of complexes HgX2(bzimtH2) and HgX2(bzimtH2)2 (X = Cl-, Br- I-, SCN-; bzimtH2 = benzo-1,3-imidazole-2-thione) was obtained by reaction of the mercury(II) salts with benzo-1,3-imidazole-2-thione in the appropriate molar ratio (1:1 or 1:2). Hg(bzimtH)2 was obtained by the deprotonation of bzimtH2 with mercury(II) acetate (irrespective of the molar ratio of the reactants). The complexes were characterised by chemical and thermal analysis, IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and some [HgX2(bzimtH2), X = I- and HgX2(bzimtH2)2, X = I- and SCN-] by X-ray single crystal diffractometry. 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic measurements in dimethyl sulphoxide revealed that the sulphur atom is coordinated to the mercury centre. The greatest complexation effects on the chemical shifts were observed for the thione carbon atom and thioamide proton. The crystal structures of HgI2(bzimtH2)2 and Hg(SCN)2(bzimtH2)2 ·C2H5OH consist of discrete monomeric molecules with halide or pseudohalide donor atoms and thione sulphur atoms tetrahedrally coordinated to the mercury atom. The structure of HgI2(bzimtH2) is polymeric with a trigonal bipyramidal 3 + 2 coordination geometry around the mercury atom. Polymerisation occurs through Hg···I interactions with neighbouring molecules. The distribution of the π-electron density in bzimtH2 corresponds to the thioketo tautomeric form in the solid state, and also in the DMSO solution of the complexes. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds of the type N-H···N, N-H···S and N-H···I are observed.

- Reaction of [SNS][AsF6] with Hg(CN)2 and PhHgCN: Preparation and crystal structures of [Hg(CNSNS)2][AsF6]2 and [PhS4N3Ph][AsF6]

Reaction of Hg(CN)2 with two equivalents of the salt [SNS][AsF6] provided a high yield (92%) route to the first metallo-dithiadiazolylium salt, [Hg(CNSNS)2][AsF6]2(I). Its structure and reactivity are compared with those of the analogous organic derivatives, [R.CNSNS][AsF6]; I initiates the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran and undergoes metathesis reactions but reduction leads to decomposition (forming S4N4), whilst oxidation with the halogens provides a novel route to the salts [X.CNSNS][AsF6] (X = Cl, Br and I). In contrast, reaction of PhHgCN with [SNS][AsF6] yielded the sulfur-nitrogen chain compound, [PhS4N3Ph][AsF6] (II) with a cation consisting of an alternating S/N chain strung between two phenyl groups.
