- Thermal desulfurization of (Alkoxymethyl)thiiranes
-
Reaction of (alkoxymethyl)oxiranes with thiourea in methanol has afforded the corresponding thiiranes, and catalyst-free thermal desulfurization of the products has been studied. The major products of desulfurization are alcohols and alkenes, both in the cases of (polyfluoroalkyloxymethyl)thiiranes and their non-fluorinated analogs. Longer alkyl chain in thiiranes favors formation of alcohols over alkenes formation in the course of desulfurization.

- Highly chemoselective hydrogenation with retention of the epoxide function using a heterogeneous Pd/C - Ethylenediamine catalyst and THF
-
In general, palladium-carbon (Pd/C) catalyzed hydrogenation of epoxides affords the corresponding primary and secondary alcohols as a mixture. It has been found that the catalytic activity of a Pd/C - ethylenediamine complex catalyst [Pd/C(en)] in the hydrogenolysis of epoxide functions is drastically reduced. Herein we describe a mild and chemoselective method for the hydrogenation of olefin, nitro, and azide functions with retention of the epoxide function. The chemoselectivity was accomplished by using a combination of 5% Pd/C(en) and THF as solvent. A significant drop in the chemoselectivity of the hydrogenation is observed with 5% Pd/C(en) in MeOH. These results reinforce the utility of epoxides as important precursors of alcohols in synthetic chemistry.

- Glyceryl Bisether Sulfates. I: Improved Synthesis
-
Sparse literature outlines previous syntheses for glyceryl bisether sulfates, which, while giving rise to the desired molecules, are somewhat cumbersome and suffer from undesired by-product formation. We now report and improved synthesis of the title compounds that results in greater simplicity and reduced by-product formation. An hypothesis is advanced to explain the by-product formation. KEY WORDS: Centrally located hydrophile, epichlorohydrin, glyceryl bisether sulfate, synthesis.

- Liquid-Liquid-Extraction of Metal Ions with Lariat Ethers
-
Lariat ethers of various ring size and substitution are synthesized and characterized by physical data and chemical analysis. The extraction behaviour of the crown compounds towards Na+, K+, Cs+ and Ag+ in a picric acid solution has been investigated. The extraction constants for 1:1 and 1:2 complexes are determined using the equilibrium distribution data. The results show that the flexible side chain in the investigated compounds has in no case a positive effect on the metal picrate extraction.
