The method includes administering an effective antifungal amount of a compound of the formula (I): wherein S is a spacer selected from a nitrogen, an oxygen, an alkyl, an alkenyl, an alcohol, an ester, a polyester, an amino acid, a carbohydrate, or a nitrogen-containing positively charged group; L is a ligand selected from a hydrogen, a hydroxyl residue, an alkyl residue, an alkenyl residue, a benzyl residue, an alcohol residue, an ester residue, a polyester residue, an alkyl acid residue, a carbohydrate, a steroid, a lipid, an organic polymer, a nitrogen-containing positively charged group or a vitamin; R1 and R3 are halogen or hydroxyl; and R2 is hydrogen or alkyl.
