- 1,3-Difunctionalization of β-alkyl nitroalkenes via combination of Lewis base catalysis and radical oxidation
-
Upon treatment with a Lewis base catalyst, β-alkyl-substituted nitroalkenes could be readily converted into allylic nitro compounds. Examples of either C-1 or C-3 functionalization methods have been reported through nitro-elimination, giving alkene products. In this work, successful 1,3-difunctionalization was achieved through a synergetic Lewis base catalysis and TBHP radical oxidation, giving vinylic alkoxyamines in good to excellent yields. This work further extended the general synthetic application of β-alkyl nitroalkenes.

- Formal Allylation and Enantioselective Cyclopropanation of Donor/Acceptor Rhodium(II) Azavinyl Carbenes
-
A highly efficient formal allylation of dihydronaphthotriazoles with alkenes under rhodium(II) catalysis is reported. Various allyl dihydronaphthalene derivatives were furnished via rhodium(II) azavinyl carbenes with moderate to good yields and excellent chemoselectivity. When monosubstituted alkenes are used, cyclopropanation occurs and good to excellent enantioselectivities have been achieved. Particularly noteworthy is the allylic C(sp2)-H activation instead of traditional C(sp3)-H activation in the formal allylation process.

- Palladium-Catalyzed Markovnikov Hydroaminocarbonylation of 1,1-Disubstituted and 1,1,2-Trisubstituted Alkenes for Formation of Amides with Quaternary Carbon
-
Hydroaminocarbonylation of alkenes is one of the most promising yet challenging methods for the synthesis of amides. Herein, we reported the development of a novel and effective Pd-catalyzed Markovnikov hydroaminocarbonylation of 1,1-disubstituted or 1,1,2-trisubstituted alkenes with aniline hydrochloride salts to afford amides bearing an α quaternary carbon. The reaction makes use of readily available starting materials, tolerates a wide range of functional groups, and provides a facile and straightforward approach to a diverse array of amides bearing an α quaternary carbon. Mechanistic investigations suggested that the reaction proceeded through a palladium hydride pathway. The hydropalladation and CO insertion are reversible, and the aminolysis is probably the rate-limiting step.

The transition-metal-catalyzed allylation reaction is an efficient strategy for the construction of new carbon-carbon bonds alongside allyl or homoallylic functionalization. Herein we describe a Ni-catalyzed reductive allylation of α-chloroboronates to efficiently render the corresponding homoallylic boronates, which could be readily converted into valuable homoallylic alcohols or amines or 1,4-diboronates. This reaction features a broad substrate scope with good functional group compatibility that is complementary to the existing methods for the preparation of homoallylic boronates.

- A donor-acceptor complex enables the synthesis of: E -olefins from alcohols, amines and carboxylic acids
-
Olefins are prevalent substrates and functionalities. The synthesis of olefins from readily available starting materials such as alcohols, amines and carboxylic acids is of great significance to address the sustainability concerns in organic synthesis. Metallaphotoredox-catalyzed defunctionalizations were reported to achieve such transformations under mild conditions. However, all these valuable strategies require a transition metal catalyst, a ligand or an expensive photocatalyst, with the challenges of controlling the region- and stereoselectivities remaining. Herein, we present a fundamentally distinct strategy enabled by electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes, for the selective synthesis of olefins from these simple and easily available starting materials. The conversions took place via photoactivation of the EDA complexes of the activated substrates with alkali salts, followed by hydrogen atom elimination from in situ generated alkyl radicals. This method is operationally simple and straightforward and free of photocatalysts and transition-metals, and shows high regio- and stereoselectivities.

- Deoxyfluorination with CuF2: Enabled by Using a Lewis Base Activating Group
-
Deoxyfluorination is a primary method for the formation of C?F bonds. Bespoke reagents are commonly used because of issues associated with the low reactivity of metal fluorides. Reported here is the development of a simple strategy for deoxyfluorination, using first-row transition-metal fluorides, and it overcomes these limitations. Using CuF2 as an exemplar, activation of an O-alkylisourea adduct, formed in situ, allows effective nucleophilic fluoride transfer to a range of primary and secondary alcohols. Spectroscopic investigations have been used to probe the origin of the enhanced reactivity of CuF2. The utility of the process in enabling 18F-radiolabeling is also presented.

- Difluorocarbene Generation from TMSCF3: Kinetics and Mechanism of NaI-Mediated and Si-Induced Anionic Chain Reactions
-
The mechanism of CF2 transfer from TMSCF3 (1), mediated by TBAT (2-12 mol %) or by NaI (5-20 mol %), has been investigated by in situ/stopped-flow 19F NMR spectroscopic analysis of the kinetics of alkene difluorocyclopropanation and competing TFE/c-C3F6/homologous perfluoroanion generation, 13C/2H KIEs, LFERs, CF2 transfer efficiency and selectivity, the effect of inhibitors, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The reactions evolve with profoundly different kinetics, undergoing autoinhibition (TBAT) or quasi-stochastic autoacceleration (NaI) and cogenerating perfluoroalkene side products. An overarching mechanism involving direct and indirect fluoride transfer from a CF3 anionoid to TMSCF3 (1) has been elucidated. It allows rationalization of why the NaI-mediated process is more effective for less-reactive alkenes and alkynes, why a large excess of TMSCF3 (1) is required in all cases, and why slow-addition protocols can be of benefit. Issues relating to exothermicity, toxicity, and scale-up are also noted.

- A Manganese Nanosheet: New Cluster Topology and Catalysis
-
While the coordination chemistry of monometallic complexes and the surface characteristics of larger metal particles are well understood, preparations of molecular metallic nanoclusters remain a great challenge. Discrete planar metal clusters constitute nanoscale snapshots of cluster growth but are especially rare owing to the strong preference for three-dimensional structures and rapid aggregation or decomposition. A simple ligand-exchange procedure has led to the formation of a novel heteroleptic Mn6 nanocluster that crystallized in an unprecedented flat-chair topology and exhibited unique magnetic and catalytic properties. Magnetic susceptibility studies documented strong electronic communication between the manganese ions. Reductive activation of the molecular Mn6 cluster enabled catalytic hydrogenations of alkenes, alkynes, and imines.

- Iridium-Catalyzed Isomerization of N-Sulfonyl Aziridines to Allyl Amines
-
The Crabtree's reagent catalyzes the isomerization of N-sulfonyl 2,2-disubstituted aziridines to allyl amines. The selectivity of allyl amine vs imine is very high (up to 99/1). The unprecedented isomerization takes place in mild conditions without activation of the catalyst by hydrogen. The mechanism has been studied computationally by DFT calculations; instead of the usual hydrogenation of COD, the catalytic species is formed by a loss of the pyridine ligand. Approaching of aziridine to this unsaturated species leads to a carbocation intermediate through a low energy barrier. A metal-mediated tautomerization involving sequentially γ-H elimination and N-H reductive elimination affords selectively the allyl amine. The readiness of the CγH bond to participate in the H elimination step accounts for the selectivity toward the allyl amine product.

Herein, we report our efforts towards the transient and safe generation of this diazo compound, its applications in iron catalyzed cyclopropanation and cyclopropenation reactions and the gram-scale synthesis of cyclopropyl nitriles.

- Fluorinative Rearrangements of Substituted Phenylallenes Mediated by (Difluoroiodo)toluene: Synthesis of α-(Difluoromethyl)styrenes
-
Phenylallenes undergo fluorinative rearrangement upon the action of (difluoroiodo)toluene in the presence of 20 mol % BF3?OEt2 to yield α-difluoromethyl styrenes. This unprecedented reaction was entirely chemoselective for the internal allene π bond, and showed remarkable regioselectivity during the fluorination event. Substituted phenylallenes, phenylallenes possessing both phenyl- and α-allenyl substituents, and diphenylallenes were investigated, and good functional-group compatibility was observed throughout. The ease with which allenes can be prepared on a large scale, and the operational simplicity of this reaction allowed us to rapidly access fluorine-containing building blocks that have not been accessed by conventional deoxyfluorination strategies.

- Asymmetric Nitrone Synthesis via Ligand-Enabled Copper-Catalyzed Cope-Type Hydroamination of Cyclopropene with Oxime
-
We report realization of the first enantioselective Cope-type hydroamination of oximes for asymmetric nitrone synthesis. The ligand promoted asymmetric cyclopropene "hydronitronylation" process employs a Cu-based catalytic system and readily available starting materials, operates under mild conditions and displays broad scope and exceptionally high enantio- and diastereocontrol. Preliminary mechanistic studies corroborate a CuI-catalytic profile featuring an olefin metalla-retro-Cope aminocupration process as the key C-N bond forming event. This conceptually novel reactivity enables the first example of highly enantioselective catalytic nitrone formation process and will likely spur further developments that may significantly expedite chiral nitrone synthesis.

- Visible light-promoted dihydroxylation of styrenes with water and dioxygen
-
An efficient visible light promoted metal-free dihydroxylation of styrenes with water and dioxygen has been developed for the construction of vicinal alcohols. The protocol was operationally simple with a broad substrate scope. The mechanistic studies demonstrated that one of the hydroxyl groups came from water and the other one came from molecular oxygen. Additionally, the β-alkyoxy alcohols could also be obtained using a similar strategy.

- The cumene/O2 system: A very simple tool for the radical chain oxidation of some functional groups
-
Due to the relative stability of the cumyl radical, cumenes and α-methyl-styrenes are ideally structured to directly harvest the oxidizing reactivity of O2 and initiate radical chain reactions in catalyst-free conditions. In the absence of additional substrates, these processes can lead to acetophenones. In the presence of substrates, the cumene oxidation process can be intercepted in various chain reactions, affording very simple protocols for functional group oxidation.

- A Metal-Free Oxidative Dehydrogenative Diels–Alder Reaction for Selective Functionalization of Alkylbenzenes
-
Functionalization of C(sp3)?H bonds under metal-free reaction conditions is a great challenge due to poor bond reactivity. A novel metal-free oxidative dehydrogenative Diels–Alder reaction of alkylbenzene derivatives with alkenes through C(sp3)?H bond functionalization is described. The developed oxidative method provides a straightforward approach to biologically relevant 1,4-phenanthraquinone and isoindole derivatives from readily available starting materials. Furthermore, the synthesis of nitrostyrenes from enylbenzene derivatives by selective C(sp3)?H bond functionalization has been demonstrated.

- Copper(i)-mediated synthesis of β-hydroxysulfones from styrenes and sulfonylhydrazides: An electrochemical mechanistic study
-
Copper(i) halides were used as mediators in the synthesis of β-hydroxysulfones via the oxysulfonylation of styrenes using sulfonylhydrazides. The feature of the developed process lies in the combination of a copper(i) salt with oxygen - the stoichiometric oxidant. Copper(ii) species are responsible for the oxidation of sulfonylhydrazides, they are generated in small amounts in the O2/Cu(i)/Cu(ii) redox system, which is formed during the reaction. The combination of these three components enables one to obtain in the case of α-methylstyrenes only β-hydroxysulfones and in the case of α-unsubstituted styrenes, β-hydroxysulfones as the main products and β-ketosulfones as the by-products. With good yields β-hydroxysulfones were prepared by reduction of the reaction mixture containing both products β-hydroxysulfones and β-ketosulfones with NaBH4. An electrochemical study revealed that the Cu(i)/Cu(II) pair can serve as an effective mediator of β-hydroxysulfones formation via redox processes.

- Organic base-catalysed solvent-tuned chemoselective carbotrifluoromethylation and oxytrifluoromethylation of unactivated alkenes
-
An unprecedented and efficient organic base-catalysed highly chemoselective carbo- and oxytrifluoromethylation of unactivated alkenes with Togni's reagent was developed. The switchable chemoselectivity was tuned by simply changing the organic base catalyst and solvent. Mechanistic studies indicated that a radical cyclization pathway for carbotrifluoromethylation in DMSO and a carbocation pathway for oxytrifluoromethylation in DCE were probably involved.

Visible-light photoreductive coupling of 2-arylallyl bromides in the presence of the photocatalyst Ru(bpy)3(PF6)2, a Hantzsch ester, and i-Pr2NEt gives 2,5-diaryl-1,5-dienes in high yield. This method avoids the use of stoichiometric metal reductants and is compatible with the presence of halogen, alkyl, electron-donating, and electron-withdrawing substituents on the aromatic ring.
