- Ni-Catalyzed Reductive Allylation of α-Chloroboronates to Access Homoallylic Boronates
-
The transition-metal-catalyzed allylation reaction is an efficient strategy for the construction of new carbon-carbon bonds alongside allyl or homoallylic functionalization. Herein we describe a Ni-catalyzed reductive allylation of α-chloroboronates to efficiently render the corresponding homoallylic boronates, which could be readily converted into valuable homoallylic alcohols or amines or 1,4-diboronates. This reaction features a broad substrate scope with good functional group compatibility that is complementary to the existing methods for the preparation of homoallylic boronates.

- MnBr2 catalyzed regiospecific oxidative Mizoroki-Heck type reaction
-
Herein, we report an unprecedented regiospecific oxidative Mizoroki-Heck type reaction for the synthesis of ɑ-difluoromethyl homoallylic alcohols. The reaction shows broad substrate scopes and high functional group tolerance. Late-stage functionalization of complex biologically active molecules demonstrates the synthetic potential of this transformation. Mechanistic study supports the involvement of MnBr2 catalyzed radical 1,2-silyl transfer.

- Synthesis of Tertiary Benzylic Nitriles via Nickel-Catalyzed Markovnikov Hydrocyanation of α-Substituted Styrenes
-
The Markovnikov hydrocyanation of α-substituted styrenes enables the synthesis of tertiary benzylic nitriles under nickel catalysis. The Lewis-acid-free transformation features an unprecedented functional groups tolerance, including the-OH and-NH2 groups. A broad range of tertiary benzylic nitriles were obtained in good to excellent yields. In addition, an asymmetric version of this reaction was preliminarily investigated.

- A Manganese Nanosheet: New Cluster Topology and Catalysis
-
While the coordination chemistry of monometallic complexes and the surface characteristics of larger metal particles are well understood, preparations of molecular metallic nanoclusters remain a great challenge. Discrete planar metal clusters constitute nanoscale snapshots of cluster growth but are especially rare owing to the strong preference for three-dimensional structures and rapid aggregation or decomposition. A simple ligand-exchange procedure has led to the formation of a novel heteroleptic Mn6 nanocluster that crystallized in an unprecedented flat-chair topology and exhibited unique magnetic and catalytic properties. Magnetic susceptibility studies documented strong electronic communication between the manganese ions. Reductive activation of the molecular Mn6 cluster enabled catalytic hydrogenations of alkenes, alkynes, and imines.

- Alkene Hydrogenations by Soluble Iron Nanocluster Catalysts
-
The replacement of noble metal technologies and the realization of new reactivities with earth-abundant metals is at the heart of sustainable synthesis. Alkene hydrogenations have so far been most effectively performed by noble metal catalysts. This study reports an iron-catalyzed hydrogenation protocol for tri- and tetra-substituted alkenes of unprecedented activity and scope under mild conditions (1–4 bar H2, 20 °C). Instructive snapshots at the interface of homogeneous and heterogeneous iron catalysis were recorded by the isolation of novel Fe nanocluster architectures that act as catalyst reservoirs and soluble seeds of particle growth.

- Kinetics and mechanism of acid catalysed hydration of α- methylstyrenes
-
Twelve para-substituted α-methylstyrenes with substituents H, CH 3, CF3, CH3O, CH3S, F, Cl, Br, CH3CO, CH3SO2, CN a NO2 were synthesised; additionally, the acid catalysed hydration kinetics of these compounds were measured in sulfuric acid in a concentration range c from 0.017 to 9.58 mol l-1, at 25.0°C. The observed rate constants obtained were used to construct the kinetic acidity function and calculate the catalytic rate constants. Based on the evaluation of the acidity function kinetic dependence on acid medium concentration, and the substituent effects of acid catalysed hydration of α-methylstyrenes on the catalytic rate constants, the mechanism of acid catalysed hydration was verified. The mechanism involves the addition of a proton to the double bond of α-methylstyrene in the rate-limiting reaction step denoted as A-SE2. No evident difference was found between the effects of the acid medium on the acid catalysed hydration of styrenes and α-methylstyrenes, which indicates very similar activity coefficients of the reactants, and of the transition state of both substrates. The substituent effects evaluation shows that the rate-limiting step of the reaction consists in the addition of a proton to the substrate. The carbocation formation in the transition state of this reaction step proceeds roughly half-way compared with the extent of the carbocation formation by cumyl chloride hydrolysis. The obtained carbocation is in particular stabilised by the substituents with +M effect, while the influence of the substituents with -M and I effects is significantly smaller.
