The chemical synthesis of 6,6'-dideoxy-6,6'-difluorosucrose was accomplished in five steps: (a) tritylation of C-6,1' and -6' of sucrose; (b) benzoylation of 6,1',6'-tri-O-tritylsucrose; (c) detritylation with mild acid; (d) fluorination at C-6 and -6' with diethylaminosulfur trifluoride (DAST); and (e) debenzoylation. The resulting compound was chromatographically pure. The structure was established by (13)C and (19)F-n.m.r. spectrometry and by elemental analysis.
