The reaction of chloromethyl butyl ether with propylene in benzene in the presence of aluminum chloride at low temperatures leads predominantly to the products from addition of the α-chloro ether to the olefin, i.e. γ-chlorodibutyl and γ-phenyldibutyl ethers.
