A process for preparing a mixture of phthalocyanine or metallo-phthalocyanine dyes and salts thereof which comprises cyclisation of a compound of Formula (1) with a compound of Formula (2) and/or Formula (3): wherein: R1 is a hydrocarbyl group; R2 is H or a hydrocarbyl group;10 R3 is H, optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted aryl or optionally substituted heterocyclyl; R4 and R5 are cyano, carboxy carboxamide or together form a group of formula (a); X is an electron withdrawing group;and n is 1 to 4: wherein the cyclisation process is carried out in the presence of a suitable nitrogen source (if required) and a metal salt (if required).
