  • It Is Essential to Supplement Vitamin K for Babies
  • It is rather important for parents to supplement adequate vitamin K for their babies, as vitamin K can prevent the bleeding diseases for new-born babies, alleviate the internal bleeding caused by the diseases and accelerate the normal solidification of the blood. However, the supplementation of vitamin K can not be achieved by the human body. It can only be realized by the synthesis of the natural substances contained in the foods or the intestinal flora. Therefore, the adults can achieve the supplementation through the foods or the intestinal flora. However, the fetuses can not absorb vitamin K through the placenta. After the delivery, babies usually only drink breast milk. Although the nutrients contained in breast milk are abundant and balanced, the content of vitamin K is rather low. It is easy for babies to lack this kind of nutrient in the first three months after the delivery.

The lack of vitamin K can cause the bleeding of the gastric and intestinal mucous membrane, the features of which are black stool, the bleeding of umbilical cord and lasting errhysis. The symptoms can stop by themselves if the condition of the illness is light. If the condition of the illness is too serious, anemia and even shock can be caused. It can be seen that the lack of vitamin K can cause rather serious results to endanger the health of the babies.

In order to maintain the normal content of the nutrient, mothers should not take the medicines which can endanger the health of the fetuses during the pregnancy. The drugs like luminal, diphenylhydantoin sodium, rifampicin and isoniazide can accelerate the decomposition of vitamin K and increase its content inside the body. Generally speaking, the doctors will inject vitamin K for the babies after the babies are born so as to prevent the bleeding for new-born babies. Many kinds of food contain abundant vitamin K, such as spinach, alfalfa, tomato, highland barley and fish. Expectant mothers should often eat these foods during the pregnancy. Parents should inject vitamin K for the babies who only drink breast milk and take the broad-spectrum antibiotic to resist diarrhea, as the broad-spectrum antibiotic can restrain the growth of normal flora to cause the lack of vitamin K and dysfunction of the cruor of the babies. But the injection must be under the guidance of the doctors.

Because of the diverse effects and importance of vitamin K, it is essential for parents to supplement enough vitamin K for their babies.
