In a 100 ml glass flask equipped with a balloon with oxygen,
reflux condenser and stirrer 50 ml of CH3CO2H, Mn(NO3)2Á4H2O
(0.137 g, 0.00054 mol), Co(NO3)2Á6H2O (0.159 g, 0.00054 mol),
TEMPO (0.42 g, 0.0027 mol), CH3CO2Na (2.24 g, 0.027 mol) and
2,2,3-trifluoro-3-(1,1,2,2,3,3-hexafluoro-3-trifluoromethoxy-pro-
poxy)-propan-1-ol (2a) (10 g, 0.027 mol) were placed. The mixture
was stirred 16 h at 60 8C under oxygen at atmospheric pressure
(flow). The progress of reaction was monitored by 19F NMR
spectroscopy. After acidification and extraction by diethyl ether,
the combined organic phases were washed with water and dried
over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed and the
residue was distilled to give 7.3 g of acid (3a) (b.p. 58 8C/
1.6 mmHg). Yield: 70%.
