A simple one-step sonochemical method for preparation of
carbon nanotube-supported Pt, Rh and bimetallic Pt–Rh
nanoparticles has been developed which requires only an
ethanol solution containing carboxylate functionalized
MWNTs, Pt2+/Rh3+ aqueous solutions, and a mild reducing
agent borane morpholine complex. Metal nanoparticles with a
narrow size distribution can be uniformly attached to the
surfaces of the MWNTs. The CNT-supported metallic nano-
catalysts are effective for hydrogenation of neat benzene and
alkylbenzenes at room temperature without solvent. Carbon
nanotube-supported bimetallic Pt–Rh nanoparticles show a
strong synergistic effect relative to the individual CNT-
supported Pt and Rh nanoparticle catalysts. Complete ring
saturation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons could be
achieved at room temperature using the sonochemical synthesized
CNT-supported bimetallic Pt–Rh nanocatalysts. These CNT-
supported metallic nanocatalysts can be reused at least 6 times
without losing catalytic activity for hydrogenation of arenes.
