measurements. The probe temperature was calibrated by means of
a thermocouple PT 100 inserted into a dummy tube. The low tem-
perature measurements were estimated to be accurate to ꢁ2 K. The
chemical shifts difference Dnc, Hz was determined by extrapolation
from the lowest temperature available to Tc and used to calculate kc
and the ring inversion barriers by the Eyring equation at Tc.

X-ray structural analysis was performed for the crystals of salt
2a grown from a 1:1 CHCl3/Et2O mixture. The structure of 2a (Fig. 1,
Table 5, and Supplementary data) was obtained on an Imaging Plate
Diffraction System IPDS-2 (Stoe) at 210 K using the graphite mon-

4.4. Theoretical calculations
All calculations were performed using the Gaussian 03 suite of
programs.54 Energy calculations with full optimization of all vari-
ables as well as calculations of vibrational frequencies were per-
formed at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) and MP2/6-311G(d,p) levels of
theory. ZPE corrections were calculated without scaling. The cal-
culations of 15N NMR chemical shifts were performed using the
GIAO method at the B3LYP/6-311þG(d,p) level of theory.
