(37) We have not been able to determine if this represents a kinetic
or thermodynamic ratio as all attempts to equilibrate the individual N-
acylaminal diastereomers led to decomposition. We favor the
interpretation of kinetic product formation under the reductive basic
reaction conditions because N-acylaminals are known to equilibrate

(38) Amide hydrolysis using phase transfer conditions reported by
Magnus and co-workers (aq H2O2, aq NaOH, Bu4NHSO4, CH2Cl2)
