[a] Reactions were performed in columns filled with co-immobilized CvTA -
LeKRED whole-cells (Column A: 402±13 mg, Column B: 415±6 mg). Racemic
amine [(±)-1a or (±)-1b, 7.5 mM) in phosphate buffer (100 mL, 100 mM, pH 7.5)
containing sodium pyruvate (30 mM), PLP (0.2 mM), NADH (0.1 mM) and 2-
propanol (2% v/v) was pumped through the columns (50 µL min-1 for 24 h) at
30 °C. [b] Isolated yield of residual amine [(R)-1a,b] from the effluents. [c]
Enantiomeric excess of (R)-1a,b and (S)-3a,b were determined by GC (see
SI). [d] Isolated yield of alcohol [(S)-3a,b] from the effluents.

In conclusion, we demonstrated a cost-effective method for co-
immobilization of whole-cells by avoiding lyophilization to provide
integrated biocatalysts of good storability and operational stability.
Entrapment of microbial cells of various origin with different
enzyme activities into a supported sol-gel system could be
integrated in one-step enabling creation of a biocatalytic cascade
system with enhanced efficiency for synthesis of chiral
compounds.
