photoluminescence with an emission maximum at ca. 417,
436, and 418 nm upon excitation at ca. 356, 369, and
346 nm, respectively. It is known that the free 2,20-bpy
molecule displays a weak luminescence at ca. 530 nm in the
solid state at room temperature. In order to understand the
nature of these emission bands, we analyzed the photo-
luminescence properties of free 4,40-oba, and confirmed
that it does not emit any luminescence in the range of
400–800 nm [8a]. Thus, according to the previous literature
[13–15], these emissions bands could be assigned to the
emissions of ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT).

In this paper, we successfully combined the merits of
d10 metal and V-shaped ligand 4,40-oxybis(benzoate), and
synthesized three helical coordination polymers
[M(oba)(phen)]$H2O (MZZn (1), Cd (2)) and
[Zn(oba)(2,20-bpy)] (3). They all contain helical chains
constructed from metal centers and V-shaped oba ligands
that are further extended into three-dimensional supramo-
lecular networks via strong p–p stacking interactions. The
successful syntheses of these new compounds demonstrate
again the ability of V-shaped carboxylate ligands to
construct helical structures. The judicious combination of
the metal atoms and V-shaped ligands will extremely enrich
the chemistry of metal-based coordination polymers.
