To a mixture of aryl halide (1; 1.0 mmol) and arylboronic
acid (2; 1.10 mmol) in WEPA (3 ml) was added 0.5 ml of
ethanol and Pd(OAc)2 (1 mol%). The resultant mixture
was stirred at r.t. for the appropriate time according to
Table 2. After completion (as indicated by TLC), the reac-
tion mixture was subjected to evaporation of ethanol and
10 ml of deionized water was added. The resultant mix-
ture was extracted with EtOAc (3 × 10 ml) and the com-
bined EtOAc layer was washed with brine, dried over
anhydrous Na2SO4 and evaporated in a rotary evaporator
to afford crude coupling product. Finally the pure biaryl
(3) was obtained by column chromatography using silica
gel‐packed glass columns with various ratios of n‐hexane
and EtOAc.

In summary, we have explored a mild, environmentally
benign and operationally simple protocol for palladium‐
catalysed r.t. SMC using natural basic medium derived
from agro‐waste (pomegranate peel) in open air. The
present catalytic system offers significant features like
wide applicability and absence of volatile organic sol-
vents, external base, promoter and ligands. Several reac-
tive functional groups such as chloro, hydroxyl, formyl,
keto, amino and ester despite their positions are tolerated
under the conditions investigated. The present methodol-
ogy shows tremendous chemo‐ and regioselectivity over
halogens of different and identical types. The corner
stone of our protocol is the highly abundant natural feed-
stock, and the method may have great utility in industrial
and academic applications in the near future. Further
investigations of the usage of WEPA in other synthetic
reactions are in progress in our laboratory.
