31 Details of optimized reactions are given in the SI. Solventꢀintense
recrystallization or chromatography were avoided whenever possible:
metathesis products 1bꢀ3b, 5b and 6b) were isolated by a simple proceꢀ
dure consisting of catalyst removal by milling with aqueous Lꢀcysteine or
disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate,32,33 washing the product with ethyl
acetate or acetone and filtration. Reactions conducted with a solid auxiliaꢀ
ry were first washed with water to remove the salt additive. An alternative
approach for separating the product from a reaction mixture containing a
salt additive was explored for 5b, by extracting the product into an organic
solvent containing diethylene glycol vinyl ether as a catalyst quenching
agent. However, after passing the solution through an acidic alumina
microplug and recrystallization, this procedure gave a lower yield of 5b
(86%) than simply washing the reaction mixture (also see SI). Product 4b,
being a liquid, required chromatographic separation from 4a. Compound
7b was isolated by recrystallisation from 1,4ꢀdioxane. Only transꢀisomers
of 1b, 2b or 3b were obtained, identified through comparison with pubꢀ
lished data, see: (a) Kuad, P.; Miyawaki, A.; Takashima, Y.; Yamaguchi,

33 Efficient removal of the catalyst requires either 50 equivalents of
sodium EDTA salt or 20 equivalents of Lꢀcysteine. The more costly
tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine gave no advantage over Lꢀcysteine.
