[19] Besides the post-functionalizations that were actually carried out, we are
confident that 17 is also applicable for further modifications such as the
deprotonation and addition of electrophiles or formation of metallocene
derivatives. 22 is useable for cross-coupling chemistry such as
Sonogashira-, Suzuki-coupling.
[20] Molar extinction coefficients at their absorption maxima range between
10,000 and 160,000 M-1cm-1 (Table S 2). Generally speaking, changes
in the solvent polarity lacked any notable impact on the oscillation
strength of the absorption. The only notable exception is 21, where the
572 nm absorption feature is more intense in PhCN compared to toluene
(Figure 2).

[21] 21, in contrast, shows quantum yields, which are well below 0.1 %,
rendering it impossible to determine any fluorescence lifetimes.
[22] Notably, the excited state dynamics of 17 (Figure S 32 – Figure S37) and
23 (Figure S26 – Figure S31) resemble the one seen for 19 (Table S 3).
Nevertheless, the deactivation follows the same mechanism.
[23] The results obtained from absorption as well as fluorescence
measurements were confirmed by frontier molecular orbital calculations
(Figure S 59– Figure S 67). Whilst 17 and 19 exhibit HOMOs and
LUMOs located in similar parts of the molecular structures, a spatial
separation is observed for 16 and 21. The latter underlines the charge-
transfer character. A weak shift of electron density is also observed for
23. Energy levels of the HOMOs and LUMOs as well as the energy gaps
are reasonably well reproduced by the calculations.
