In summary, the first general and very efficient method for
the conversion of allylic alcohols into dienes was established.
The key to success was the application of a palladium/
Xantphos catalytic system under a carbon monoxide atmo-
sphere, which acts as the ligand in the developed palladium
complex activating the catalyst for the elimination reaction of
water. Quantitative yields were achieved within 3 h. Under
optimised conditions, various allylic alcohols, e.g. terpenes
with different molecular structures, were applied obtaining
excellent yields of their corresponding dienes. Fortunately,
ether and ketone additives led to the same high catalyst activ-
ity. Furthermore, Ru3CO12 was successfully applied as an al-
ternative CO resource, showing a lot of potential in this reac-
tion, which could also be applied in commercial glassware.
