Scheme 4. Scope of The Aldol-Type Reactions

1994, 8, 244–248.
[11] The details appear in SI.
In summary, we have demonstrated for the first time that
chalcogenium salts can act as Lewis acids to activate carbonyl
compounds in various types of reactions. The scope is broad
and the reaction conditions are mild. This proof-of-concept work
opens a new avenue for the development of a new class of
Lewis acid organocatalysts. Further expansion of the scope is
underway.
