Initial attempts to carry out this reaction in an open flask re-
sulted in unsatisfactory yields of diphenyl disulfide and high
reaction times (65% after 4 h). This was attributed to the low
concentration of atmospheric oxygen in the system arising
from the high viscosity of the imidazolium ionic liquids. For a
