dienes described to date, only the open-chain 1,3-butadiene
substituted with the boronic ester derived from diethanolamine at

(13) We propose that conversion to the trifluoroborate occurred due
to the presence of small quantities of maleic acid produced by
hydrolysis of the anhydride with traces of water. However, we could
not prove whether such transformation took place before or after the
Diels−Alder reaction. Lennox, A. J. J. Organotrifluoroborate Prepara-
tion, Coupling and Hydrolysis; Springer Theses. Springer International

(14) To compare the reactivities of furan and 3-boryl-substituted
furans we ran the Diels−Alder reactions with maleic anhydride in
DMSO and the starting material/product ratios as well as the endo/
exo ratios were measured by integration in the 1H RMN spectra after
in the order 5a ≫ 5b ≈ 5d ≈ furan > 5c. Only furan evidenced a
minor proportion of the endo cycloadduct after 2 h (endo/exo 35:65),
which converted into its exo counterpart after 24 h.
