Conversions for all reactions were determined on a Varian 3800
Gas Chromatograph using a DB 1701 column (30 m  0.25 mm Â
0.25 lm) and the following temperature program: 80 °C for
6.5 min, temperature increase to 160 °C by 10 °C/min, then to
200 °C by 20 °C/min and finally 200 °C for 2 min [pressure
14.5 psi N2]. Retention times: 1-phenylethylamine: 9.5 min;
acetophenone: 10.8 min; 1-phenylethanol: 11.1 min; 4-phenyl-2-
butanone: 14.6 min; 4-phenyl-2-butanamine: 13.9 min; 4-phe-
nyl-2-butanol: 14.9 min; octanal: 8.0 min; 1-octylamine: 8.3 min;
1-octanol: 10.4 min.
The enantiomeric purity of the acetylated amine derivates was
determined on an Agilent Technologies 7890A Gas Chromatograph
using a CP 7503 column (25 m  0.32 mm  0.25
lm) and the
following program: 40 °C for 3 min, temperature increase to
160 °C by 10 °C/min, and hold 160 °C for 1 min. [constant flow
3 mL/min He].
