Ternary (Cu, Ni and Co) Nanocatalysts for Hydrogenation of Octanal to Octanol: An Insight into…
15. Gutierrez V, Alvarez M, Volpe MA (2012) Appl Catal A
octanal hydrogenation, the trimetallic catalysts (with Cu, Ni
and Co) showed best catalytic performance when compared
to the bimetallic catalysts. From the catalytic testing over
bimetallic catalysts, it can be concluded that the presence
of copper increases the selectivity towards octanol and the
presence of Cu–Ni increases the conversion of octanal. The
conversion of octanal increased with an increase in metal
loading due to the increase in the number of active sites
on the surface of the catalyst. In parallel, it increased the
weak acidity of the catalysts which enhanced the selectivity
towards octanol. With increase in temperature, the conver-
sion of octanal and selectivity towards octanol increased
over all the catalysts. There is a slight change in the selec-
tivity towards octanol with change of intermetallic loading
on the surface of the catalysts. The catalyst with the silica
support showed lower conversion and increased selectivity
towards the C24 acetal which formed due to the increase in
the surface acidity of the catalyst. The product distribution
is in agreement with the Lewis and Brønsted acidic nature
of the catalysts. The ternary catalyst with alumina as sup-
port showed better overall results when compared to the
silica supported catalyst.
