25. General procedure for the preparation of naphthopyran derivatives: Into a stirred
mixture of aldehyde (1 mmol), malononitrile (1 mmol), and b-naphthol
(1 mmol) was added thiourea dioxide (10 mol % in water 2 ml). The reaction
mixture was heated at 50 °C for 8 h under stirring. The progress of the reaction
was monitored by TLC (SiO2). After completion, the reaction mixture was
cooled to room temperature and extracted with diethyl ether (2 Â 10 ml). The
combined organic layer was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced
pressure. The crude product was purified by column chromatography on silica
gel with ethyl acetate and hexane (40/60) to afford the naphthopyran
derivative. The recovered aqueous solution of thiourea dioxide was recycled
as such for next run.
