to the nanoparticle nature of Fe3O4, with a high specific surface
area and isolation of catalytic active sites, which in turns increases
the catalytic activity. Also, due to the ease of catalyst separation
from the reaction mixture by a magnet, the strategy of magnetical
separation is simpler and more effective than filtration or centrifu-
gation as it prevents the loss of the catalyst (Fig. 5).

Oxidation of alkanes is a challenging problem in organic chem-
istry. The Mn(TPyP)/SiO2–Fe3O4/NaIO4catalytic system converts
different alkanes to their corresponding alcohols and ketones.
Cyclooctane, cyclohexane and tetralin were oxidized in high yields
to their corresponding alcohols and ketones. In contrast, ethylben-
zene, propylbenzene and diphenylmethane only produced the cor-
responding ketones (Table 5).
In biomimetic systems using manganese porphyrins as catalysts,
addition of an axial base is necessary to obtain high catalytic activ-
ity. Actually, imidazole coordinates to Mn and activates the cata-
lyst. In this case, it is possible to obtain a pentacoordinate Mn(III)
complex which leaves a vacant position on the manganese for catal-
ysis. On the other hand, addition of a
p-donor base increases the
stability of the metal oxo complex. The co-catalytic role of imidaz-
ole in the oxidation of hydrocarbons with NaIO4 catalyzed by sup-
ported metalloporphyrins has been reported previously [26–32].

The reusability of a heterogeneous catalyst is of great impor-
tance from synthetic and economical points of view. The homoge-
neous Mn(TPyP)OAc cannot be recovered even once, in contrast,
the Fe3O4 magnetic nano particles supported catalyst can be sepa-
rated and reused several times without significant loss of its activ-
ity. The reusability of Mn(TPyP)/SiO2–Fe3O4 was investigated in the
multiple sequential epoxidation of cyclooctene with NaIO4. At the
end of the each reaction, the catalyst was separated by a perma-
nent magnet, washed with Et2O and dried carefully before using
it in the next run. After using the catalyst for six consecutive times,
the epoxide yields were 89% (Table 6). The filtrates were collected
for determination of Mn leaching. The results showed that after
three first runs, no remarkable manganese was detected in the fil-
trates by ICP analysis.

4. Conclusion
We have successfully developed a novel catalytic system by the
immobilization of a manganese(III) tetrapyridylporphyrin catalyst
on magnetic nanoparticles. This immobilized catalyst showed
excellent catalytic capability in the oxidation of alkenes and
