to [IiPr-H]+. In contrast, the exquisite selectivity of
MeAl(BHT)2/Et3N FLP toward dimerization has the
relationship with the unique chain-transfer to [Et3N-
H]+. Overall, the results reported herein establish a
versatile bio-refinery platform that two products can
be synthesized from one feedstock via one catalytic
system.

MeAl(BHT)2/IiPr CLA is outlined in Scheme 2. Accordingly, the
catalytic cycle of MeAl(BHT)2/Et3N FLP-mediated dimerization
is proposed to consist of basic initiation-conjugate addition-
chain transfer to monomer and MeAl(BHT)2 release
fundamental steps (Scheme 3, bottom). Intriguingly, when
monitoring the dimerization by 1H NMR spectra, besides the
observation of a gradual decrease of β-AL and an increase of
dimer product with increasing reaction time, the characteristic
peaks attributed to α-AL isomer can also be detected (Figure
S18), indicating a reversible hydride abstraction and addition
through the amine center. Such new H-shuttling chain-transfer
mechanism suggested that chain-transfer to [Et3N-H]+ to form
dimer is present in MeAl(BHT)2/Et3N-mediated dimerization
(Scheme 3, top). Noteworthily, chain-transfer to [IiPr-H]+ is
excluded in MeAl(BHT)2/IiPr-mediated LPP as the characteristic
peaks of α-AL were undetectable (Figure S19) presumably due
to less acidic [IiPr-H]+ compared with [Et3N-H]+.
In summary, an unprecedentedly efficient dimerization and
the first successful polymerization of lignocellulose-based β-AL
have been achieved by utilizing a selective LP catalytic system.
Accordingly, high-quality gasoline-like biofuel (C8~C9 branched
alkanes, yield = 87%) after HDO of dimer and heat- and
solvent-resistant acrylic bioplastic (Mn up to 26.0 kg/mol) can be
selectively produced. Investigations into the mechanism
revealed that the keys to successful polymerization by
RAl(BHT)2 (R = Me, Et, iBu)/IiPr CLA have mainly relied on: (1)
the balanced Lewis acidity of RAl(BHT)2 which is sufficient
needed for monomer activation but the lowest possible to
suppress the LA-activated chain transfer to monomer; (2) the
utilization of strong Lewis basic IiPr to shut down chain transfer
