(MMFF). Conformational searches led, for each compound, to a
limited number (3 to 6) of low-energy minima that were optimized
in vacuo at DFT level, employing the B3LYP functional with the
6-31G(d) basis set.[52] Subsequently, the ground-state stable con-
formers were optimized by increasing the basis set, 6-311+G(d,p),
and including the solvent effects for acetonitrile by the polarizable
continuum model in its Integral Equation Formalism version
(IEFPCM).[33] The default set of sphere radii (UFF) implemented
in the Gaussian code was used. TDDFT calculations were run with
the functionals B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, M06, BH&HLYP, PBE0,
ωB97X, ωB97X-D[52] and PBE0-1/3,[44] and with the SVP,
TZVP,[52] and aug-TZVP basis sets.[53] The ΓNTO-index calculations
were carried out with a locally modified version of the Gaussian 09
development program (Gaussian 09, Revision H11, Gaussian, Inc.,
Wallingford, CT, 2009). The general definition of the Γ-metric in-
volves the weighted sum (by configuration coefficients) of two con-
tributions: the orbital centroid distance and the variation of the
electron delocalization around each centroid of the involved orbit-
als. In particular, ΓNTO applies this definition to NTOs (see Fig-
ure SI3 in the Supporting Information), a single value decomposi-
tion of the transition density matrix, that extracts a maximal corre-
spondence between the excited “particle” and the empty “hole”.[43]
