COMMUNICATION
In summary, a simple and efficient strategy for promoting
natural ATP photosynthesis by entrapping an artificial PAG into
chloroplasts and thus forming a biohybrid system is developed.
After undergoing an intramolecular photochromic reaction, the
proton dissociation state of the PAG is stable for a long time,
enabling it to act as an excellent proton source. Ultrasonication
treatment clearly increases the amount of PAG taken up by the
chloroplasts. Under light irradiation, the photophosphorylation
efficiency for ATP synthesis is dramatically improved up to 3.9
times because of the creation of an excess proton gradient in
situ. This work has good potential for improving the solar energy
conversion of green plants.
