MAS NMR technique showed first an increase in the level of
disorder in the crystalline phase and then an amorphization of
the material with a conversion rate suggesting a mechanism
mainly driven by a double cascade−overlap amorphization
process. The crystalline phase remains present up to ∼2 × 1018
α-decays/g, corresponding to self-irradiation for ∼8 months.
PuAlO3 was found to crystallize in the Imma orthorhombic
perovskite configuration for the first time in this study. This
shows that plutonium perovskite has a “low-temperature”
peculiarity similar to those of its cerium and praseodymium
analogues. 27Al MAS NMR showed a single peak in agreement
with the single Al crystallographic site in the structure deduced

from Rietveld refinement. The Imma → R3c transition
occurred between 473 and 573 K according to high-
temperature XRD measurements. The thermal behavior of
the rhombohedral phase was measured between 573 and 1273
K, and the extrapolation of the data suggested that the
plutonium cubic perovskite should become stable around 1850

K (R3c → Pm3m transition). However, PuAlO3 was found to
be very sensitive to oxidation from 1373 K, because at this
temperature oxidation into PuO2 occurred during XRD
measurement by traces of oxygen in the helium.
The main advantage of using AmAlO3 as an americium-
bearing material for space application compared to americium
oxide is its chemical stability under both reductive and
oxidative conditions. This makes the material stable in a range
of relevant environments, including sintering, operation
condition under the vacuum of space, and accidental
conditions. However, the observed swelling and amorphization
of the material suggest a low structural stability under self-
irradiation, which is not optimal for its application as heat
sources for RHUs or RTGs.
