influence the chemical shifts of the metal cations (if available)
and also the nitrogen atoms present in these complexes. The differ-
ent symmetries of the investigated complexes are manifested in
the solid state NMR spectra by the number of signals observed.
Additionally, some chemical shift values can be correlated with
the M–N and M–O bond lengths, but only on a qualitative level.
Summarising the presented results, we can state that both meth-
ods under study deliver different kind of data. If we have crystals
good enough for X-ray single crystal measurement, we can obtain
full structural information not available by other methods, but if
we only have powder samples then heteronuclear solid state CP
MAS NMR experiments can be the method of choice. By complex
analysis of all the available NMR chemical shifts we can define
the chemical bonds, scheme and symmetry of the molecule, which
leads to a conclusion close to the X-ray results, but all of the time
we have to remember that the NMR data have only qualitative
character. Sometimes heteronuclear coupling constants can be
very useful in such elucidations (for example, in the cadmium
complexes). Unfortunately, the available database of such cou-
plings is rather limited, which drastically limits their application.
Typical solid state CP MAS NMR analysis generally is based on
chemical shift values, where it is very easy to compare the results
obtained in the solid state with measurements taken for solutions.
This comparison is very simple and reliable because in both phases
we can analyse the same spectral parameters.
