an oil bath at 100 °C for 20 h, and then 1 mL of water was added to the
reaction mixture, which was extracted three times with EtOAc (2 mL
each). The combined organic phase was evaporated under reduced
pressure. The crude material was purified by silica gel column
chromatography, followed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) in
some cases.

simple reduction product of the starting amide were detected by GC or
GC-MS, in addition to the N-alkylation products.
