We report the first direct observations of ion/molecule reactions of the methyl anion CH3(1-) in the gas phase.Methyl anions are generated by means of collision-induced dissociation (CID) of CH3CO2(1-) or CH3CH2O(1-) in a flowing afterglow-triple quadrupole instrument.Ion/molecule reactions of CH3(1-) can be observed when CID is effected in the presence of reactive gases under appropriate conditions of collision energy and reactant gas pressure.Following fragmentation of the precursor ion, methyl anion reactions take place within the collision cell under nonthermalconditions. For a given neutral reactant, only those product ions that are unique to CH3(1-) are reported.Reflecting its strongly basic character <ΔH0acid(CH4)=416.6 kcal/mol> and its low electron-binding energy
