Nous avons confirmé l’importance du phénomène d’écaillage
sur la tenue à l’oxydation cyclique. Grâce à des coefficients de
dilatation plus faibles, les aciers inoxydables ferritiques stabi-
lisés sont peu sensibles aux chocs thermiques. L’intégrité des
couches de chromine et de silice est préservée et assure
ainsi des cinétiques d’oxydation faibles sur des durées impor-
tantes.

Il est apparu que la teneur en silicium et le choix du ou des
stabilisants (Ti, Nb) permet d’abaisser la teneur en chrome
nécessaire (12 ou 14 % suivant la température) pour garan-
tir une bonne tenue à l’oxydation en conditions de cyclage
thermique. Ces additions de stabilisants, initialement effec-
tuées pour améliorer la tenue à la corrosion aqueuse (Ti) et
la tenue au fluage (Nb), présentent donc également un inté-
rêt pour la tenue en oxydation. Une meilleure compréhen-
sion des phénomènes mis en jeu, notamment sur l’adhé-
rence des couches d’oxydes ainsi que l’optimisation de leurs
teneurs, sera nécessaire pour contribuer à l’amélioration des
nuances d’aciers inoxydables ferritiques stabilisées desti-
nées à l’échappement automobile dans les années à venir.
